Shoulder issues, commentator issues
First, allow me to provide a little background on today's notebook, which mentions a Ryan Zimmerman shoulder injury. During the MASN broadcast last night, injured catcher Paul Lo Duca took a turn in the booth. When Zimmerman took an awkward swing in the eighth, Lo Duca let it slip that Zimmerman had been battling some "nerve issues" in his right shoulder.
The truth? Zimmerman talked about it after the game. He does have a minor shoulder injury. But it's his left shoulder. Nothing nerve-related, he said.
The reason I didn't reference the MASN and Lo Duca in the story for the $1.50 edition had only to do with both time constraints and a lack of certainty about what was said. As you know, the haggard media types that inhabit the press box sit at the top of Nationals Park, holstered away from everything but the field below and the cafeteria trays of steamed veggies/mystery meat behind us.
We have TVs in the press box, but they always remain on mute.
Therefore, we have no idea what's being said on MASN.
On deadline after the game, I couldn't immediately get in touch with a MASN spokesperson to ask about the broadcast. Nor could I find Lo Duca in the clubhouse after the game. So I focused on the injury as a standalone issue.
Anyway, we'll see if anything more develops with this today.
In the meantime, let me take the pulse from anybody who watched the telecast last night? From the way Lo Duca spoke about the injury, did you get the impression it was serious?
