Sunday lineups: Marlins finale

Still recovering from the Drive-By Truckers last night. Turns out I coulda covered that fiasco and still made the show, given that they didn't hit the stage till 11:05 or so.

Manny Acta tinkers with the lineup today against Scott Olsen, the Marlins' best starter.

Florida:
Amezaga -- 8
Hermida -- 9
Ramirez -- 6
Cantu -- 5
Uggla -- 4
Gonzalez -- 7
Helms -- 3
Rabelo -- 2
Olsen -- 1

Washington:
Lopez -- 6
Belliard -- 4
Zimmerman -- 5
Boone -- 3
Milledge -- 8
Pena -- 7
Dukes -- 9
Flores -- 2
Hill -- 1

This is my final day at the helm of the Journal before I hand it over to a new voice, Chico Harlan. He'll introduce himself in this space tomorrow morning, and I'll have a meaty post mid-day or so here. Enjoy the game. Much like the Nationals needed that last game in Houston, seems like they badly need a win here.

Barry,

We had joy, we had fun, we had three seasons in the sun. Good luck, except when the Redskins play the Giants.

Posted by: leetee1955 | May 11, 2008 1:04 PM | Report abuse

I am with you on the Giants. I tried to write longer submissions, giving JayB props for being right in the off-season, for the most part, and welcoming Chico, but the stupid web site didn't work.

Therefore, I must take back everything I said, and start from scratch later.

barry-
thanks for your blog-founding tutelage based on wit, curiosity and geniality. you will be missed as you wander over to the human-bowling side. welcome aboard, chico. you may remember the mel brooks movie where the elaborate wrought-iron arch over the entrance to the mental institution says "home for the profoundly bewildered." here, it might read "home for the enormously discontented." but most of us won't take it out on you...

Posted by: natty bumppo | May 11, 2008 1:32 PM | Report abuse

Damn, your taking it all back????

Posted by: JayB | May 11, 2008 1:32 PM | Report abuse

jayB-

Not really. I discussed all you said in the last topic, and said that you were more right than worng, and gave you credit for that.

My points:

Nieves has been better than Schneider.

I grant you Church, although I think he will wither in NY after his first slump.

I granted you Hunter, although just as many were calling for Andruw Jones, which would have been a disaster.

Lohse is a surprise, but you called it.

Livo has a worse ERA than Odalis Perez, adn also might not have any wins with us, but he would have pitched more innings.

There is a _reason_ this team does not try to steal bases. I don't care that Zimmerman's pop-up would have scored him if he were safe, because he was so very, very out.

Stop trying to steal bases, period.

From Lurkin' with Ladson:

"Fish courted Nats LoDuca in winter." There were no winners in that contest.

From the looks of things, I guess Belliard hit a homer.

Nice gamer Chico. Do you wear a fedora, have a funny moustache and smoke stogies while preparing your stories on the typewriter in your poorly lit room? Thats what the NJ expects and the only thing Barry did poorly.

Also, you may want to put in your request now for your replacement comma key. Word is the sports dept is a bit frugal when allotting cash to baseball coverage.

More Lurkin with Ladson:

JimBow is threatening to bring up outfielders Mike Daniel and Justin Maxwell if the Nats continue to flounder (ironic withe the Fish in town, no?) Leave them be and let them develop the right way rather than promoting them to the Isle of Misfit Toys.

Barry - thanks. You must be nostalgic about Shawn's sinker today.

Chico - It only gets better after 5/10. And Shawn's sinker is spoken for.

[RF]ing Ayala

Posted by: Shawn Hill | May 11, 2008 3:21 PM | Report abuse

the nats bullpen should be renamed "gasoline alley." what a bunch of arsonists. but that shows you why managers use the cya strategy in having a "7th-inning gut," :an 8th-inning guy" etc. so when the press asks manny why he pulled hill who pitched an easy seven innings, he can say "hey, it was the eight inning and that's when we use ayala." creeping la rusaism, as bob ryan of the boston globe would say. ayala should be nicknamed either "mid-grade" or "premium."

What did I tell you, Manny? LEAVE SHAWN IN. He had another inning in that arm before it falls off again; let's use it to win some games, hmm?

Posted by: Anonymous | May 11, 2008 3:30 PM | Report abuse

Manny needs to seriously rethink his strategy where it comes to the use of his bullpen. Stop being an automaton when starters get to the seventh inning thinking you HAVE to pull him and go to the bullpen. Don't adhere to pitch counts, trust what you SEE. Manny goes to the bullpen so often that some of these guys will be burned out by Memorial Day.

You'd think leading the league in appearances we could expect you never to break down!

I guess Jimbo may finally need to acquire a useful member of the bullpen, though it's impressive that he's gone almost 4 years without adding even one.
