Health news, and not altogether bad

* First, some relatively good news on the Ryan Zimmerman front. Today, Zimmerman began light swinging drills for the first time since heading to the disabled list June 3 with a small labral tear in his left shoulder. In the last month, Zimmerman has treated his shoulder with a program of rest and strength therapy exercises, but he's noticed that much of the soreness has diminished. In Cincinnati later this week, he will receive a check-up from Tim Kremchek, the orthopedist who's overseen his recovery. Season-ending surgery has not yet been ruled out, but Zimmerman said his progress is encouraging. If all goes well, he hopes to begin a rehab assignment shortly after the All-Star break.

* With a nod to Svrluga, this one goes under the "Didn't (and won't) make the paper" heading. Yesterday, the Nats promoted seven of their top minor-league prospects within the system. Who got promoted?

1. C Luke Montz, to Class AAA Columbus
2. INF Ofilio Casto, to Columbus
3. 1B Bill Rhinehart, to Class AA Harrisburg
4. OF Edgardo Baez, to Harrisburg
5. 3B Leonard Davis, to Harrisburg
6. OF Aaron Seuss, to Class A Potomac
7. SS Daniel Lyons, to Potomac

* We've got Paul Lo Duca catching tonight. Manny Acta reasoned that Collin Balester is already comfortable with Lo Duca, because Lo Duca caught for Balester briefly while in Columbus.

* Chad Cordero isn't yet scheduled for his shoulder surgery, but he'll meet with orthopedist Lewis Yocum on Thursday.

* It's raining right now. Quite a bit. White tarp is on the field. Neither team will take batting practice outdoors.

But if they ever get on the field...

Bernadina - 8
Guzman - 6
Dukes - 9
Young - 3
Belliard - 5
Lo Duca - 2
Pena - 7
Lopez - 4
Balester - 1

Ramirez - 6
Hermida - 9
Cantu - 5
Willingham - 7
Jacobs - 3
Ross - 8
Andino - 4
Treanor - 2
Hendrickson - 1

Man, I have had one brutal day at work. I've been looking forward to going home and watching Balester pitch, but that lineup almost makes me want to stay at work.

didn't flores catch him as well when he was down there?

eh, it's like he was looking for an excuse to put him at C instead of just doing it because he thought he should.

After hearing the Florida announcers ham it up last night, I came to the conclusion that Joshn Willingham's nickname, "The Hammer," is probably the worst in all of baseball. It's made worse by those hacks in the TV booth, for sure.

Second place goes to Jimmy "J-Roll" Rollins. It's not as bad as it is just plain ridiculous. Still, it's made more annoying by the fact that the Philly announcers have basically ceased calling the man Jimmy Rollins, chosing to adopt his Jimmy From the Bloc personna instead.

Honorable mention to Carlos "Go Go" Gomez of the Twins. Again, it's not that the name is bad in and of itself. It's just the way Minnesotans pronounce it - with that long O like their mouths are perpetually full of ice cream - is so damned annoying. Especially when the whole stadium is saying it at the same time. They're ga ga over Go Go, and it makes my ears want to vomit.

There is NO good reason that the news of the 7 prospects being promoted should not appear in the sports section. Just cut down a little of the damn Orioles coverage and there would be plenty of space to let fans of OUR TEAM know the latest about OUR future Nats!!! Damn the WP editors!!!!

Oh, baby. It's a live crowd tonight. We've got people complaining about too much coverage of the O's, flynnie with a solid case of diarrhea of the mouth on the last post, and Chico serving up their "top" prospects (LOL) on a silver platter for me. I can't possibly go wrong tonight.

Should I rip on their pathetic minor leaguers? Bug flynnie some more over inconsequential minutiae that makes me seem smarter and superior? Remind them that we have a better record this year? How about all of the above! LOL! I'm so rad.

Alright--I can get some work done tonight rather than watching the game since we all know how this will turn out.

Between Lo Duca catching, Fatass in LF, and the King of all Flop at 2nd, I feel like our manager is trotting out a one legged man to Olympic sprint event.

Here is my prediction for tonight. Someone, please check the numbers at the end of the game and report back.

Score: 9-2
Stolen bases: Florida gets 3
Errors at 2nd: 1
Strikeouts by Fatass: 2
Strikeouts by the King of all Flop: 1
Popups by the King of all Flop: 1
GIDP by the King of all Flop: 1

Now I'm really confused. Is O's Exec posting as his own conscience? My head hurts.

The Marlins need a veteran catcher now and Manny is letting them see their catcher from 2004-2005 - Paul Lo Duca. That is why he's in the lineup.

okay, kid. you've got your run for tonight. make it stand up.

Elijah Dukes is panning out... just think if he weren't a psychopath, how much better he'd make the Rays. If he can keep out of trouble, he's going to make the Nationals front office and coaching staff look brilliant.

If Balester keeps this up, his ERA at the end of the season will be 0.00

plod AND flop coming through for a run? who knew?

Posted by: natsscribe | July 1, 2008 8:19 PM | Report abuse

Tim Tolman had been flying under the radar for a while, hadn't he?

Posted by: leetee1955 | July 1, 2008 8:23 PM | Report abuse

Man... Guzman was coming up next, Id rather take my chances with him than send FLop home there. That could easily come back to haunt us.

Uh oh...

This is not good, Hanley Ramirez stepping in with the bases jacked against a debuting pitcher. Im going to cover my eyes.

Posted by: Jason | July 1, 2008 8:31 PM | Report abuse

Ah, thats such a cheap run, if only Dukes could have made it to that ball!

Oh well, good pitch Balester.

You got one part of the final score right!! Go Dukes, go Balliard!

Great debut from Balester. But even better was the constant shots of his dad. That was cracking us up the entire time. Everytime the camera panned to him, it seemed like he was telling some neighbor "That's my boy!" or "that's my son!"

Great stuff. Oh, and his son had great stuff too. 95 on the gun!? Overpowering one of the best hitting teams in the league? Nohitter for 4 innings? that's what i'm talking about.
