Breaking News: All of Acta's Assistants Gone, Except St. Claire

Up here in the press box, where the Nats are losing 8-3 in the bottom of the eighth, we just got word on one of the major offseason decisions: Washington will be bringing only one of its assistant coaches, Randy St. Claire, back for next season. Nobody else will be back with the team, including oft-criticized hitting coach Lenny Harris.

Others whose contracts will not be renewed: third base coach Tim Tolman, bench coach Pat Corrales, first base coach Jerry Morales and bullpen coach Rick Aponte. All have been with the Nats organization for two seasons. They were notified of the decision Saturday night, GM Jim Bowden said.

Washington also cut ties with strength and conditioning coach Kazu Tomooka and team video coordinator Tom Yost.

I'll have more on this as soon as possible.

Let's try to keep the fire going during the offseason.

1st pick, baby.

Posted by: Positively Half St. | September 28, 2008 4:16 PM | Report abuse

Sutton's favorite story of the year was Willie Harris. That shows for sure how bad it was.

The Nats! The Nats lose!! Hooray!!!

The Nats dynasty started this weekend....

Posted by: Fisch Fry | September 28, 2008 4:17 PM | Report abuse

Is it true they're going to outsource these positions to India?
What? Oh. INTERNS.

What? That wasn't the Nats, it was the Post?
Oh. Nevermind.

LOL on the filename!

Posted by: misschatter | September 28, 2008 4:22 PM | Report abuse

What do you have to do (or not do) to get fired as video coordinator? wowsers

Posted by: formerly section 519 | September 28, 2008 4:22 PM | Report abuse

Chico -- can you ask about the story on by Bill Ladson? It was time stamped 3:02 today and said the coaches were informed this morning and Bowden wasn't available for comment. Why the difference in details?

Posted by: curious | September 28, 2008 4:23 PM | Report abuse

Same old thing - Jimbo trying to keep his job - if he fired Acta then the finger would be pointed directly at him. That's the most ridiculous example of self-preservation I've ever seen. Fire the entire staff except St. Claire, but keep the manager of this train wreck. Bowden's not capable of the level of honesty needed in order to admit that Acta was a failure on his part. He just can't do it, and the naive, timid billionaires will go along with it because he's bullied them the entire way.

We lost the video guy!!!! We did it!

When does Bowden get canned?

Posted by: Strasburg Express | September 28, 2008 4:31 PM | Report abuse

I think these moves might be long overdue. Especially Harris. Though I can't see exactly how a first base coach really affects the team :-)

like tomorrow?

The only one I'm surprised about is Pat C., who is said to have had a good influence on and an important role in the development of Jesus Flores. Hard to see how a bench coach could have much responsibility for how lousy the Nats were this year. But I'm glad to see the housecleaning. Of course, the real test of whether the Nats are serious about turning things around is the fate of one James Bowden. I guess we'll know soon.

Welcome Stephen Strasburg! You're going to love pitching for the World Champion Washington Nationals in 2013.

30-character limit on the filename, apparently.

"We have given you a republic, if you can keep it"
Ben Franklin, 1792

"We have given you Strasburg, if you can sign him"

Wow. Churchie gives the Mets their final out of the year and keeps them out of the post-season. And Ayala gives up a HR in his appearance. The Mets might want to rethink trading with the Nats in the future...

Posted by: JennX | September 28, 2008 5:07 PM | Report abuse

I'm suprised that they cut Morales as well (I'd called out Corrales & Aponte, as well as the obvious suspects) a few posts earlier, but even the video guy, WOW! - clearly, this was a house-cleaning by Kasten, trying to set a tone for the off-season & 2009. Manny will probably rebuild his staff from the minors (eyes & ears for upcoming players), but JimBow has to be hearing footsteps based on this.

Posted by: BIM | September 28, 2008 5:17 PM | Report abuse

I'd have much rather had the Nats win and Seattle lose. No way I can celebrate this loss or any other, draft pick or not.

Also, hi, Jenn! Glad to see the Mets out of it. Now we just need the Phillies to go down in the first round...

What is the file name you all speak of?

Posted by: natsfan1a | September 28, 2008 5:19 PM | Report abuse

Bowden's "fate" should be decided in this coming week...but I doubt we know tomorrow. I have a terrible gut feeling he stays. Prove me wrong.

Posted by: Andrew Stebbins | September 28, 2008 5:27 PM | Report abuse

Natsfan1 - look in your URL box.

Posted by: Andrew Stebbins | September 28, 2008 5:28 PM | Report abuse

@jennX: What the Mets should re-think is having "homewrecker" Minaya as their GM - oh, wait, they resigned him last week to an extension. BWWW-AAA-HHAAA-HAAAA...!
Mets fans, welcome to a new stadium with a team that will turn into a flaming bag of crap. Now, if we could only convince Loria that Bowden would be perfect as their next GM, we'd be in the hunt.

Posted by: BIM | September 28, 2008 5:28 PM | Report abuse

Wow...the GM gives the coaching staff a bunch of stiffs, has beens and AAA/AAAA players and then the coaching staff gets axed...

Actually, I am glad to see that they got canned (no love for Lenny or Tim the tool Tolman here), but one would have to think that the one who built the team (JimBO) should be next...

Posted by: TimDz | September 28, 2008 5:35 PM | Report abuse

Oh, duh - thanks Andrew!

Posted by: natsfan1a | September 28, 2008 5:36 PM | Report abuse

BTW, did anyone else see the sign in the Philly stands yesterday? It was the one that had the Mets Logo under a sign that read:

International Sign for Choking...

Posted by: TimDz | September 28, 2008 5:37 PM | Report abuse

Yes, I did, Tim. That was pretty funny!

Posted by: natsfan1a | September 28, 2008 5:40 PM | Report abuse

For 2009, I'd also like to se the Lerners' sack Clint (Nationals' Park version of Ryan Seacrest), Screech (a dumb mascot - rotate the Presidents in the stands instead), and the Racing Presidents (see above); this is just a rip-off of the 7th inning Miller Park "racing Sausages". Put the product on the field, not in the stands!

Posted by: BIM | September 28, 2008 5:40 PM | Report abuse

Next to come better be Manny and St. Clair! How is St.Clair not the 2nd coach fired?

Are you kidding me?

Posted by: AWWNats | September 28, 2008 5:50 PM | Report abuse

Oh, yeah, it's the coaches' fault...

Posted by: ohplease | September 28, 2008 5:53 PM | Report abuse

It will be interesting to see if any of the sacked coaches speak out to the media about the team and what's been going on over the season.

Posted by: Coverage is lacking | September 28, 2008 5:56 PM | Report abuse

So who gets to pick the new coaches? Manny?
Jim? Bob? This will be very interesting.

Chico, Can you ask Randy to see his pictures? They've got to be doosies.

Posted by: Wondering | September 28, 2008 6:22 PM | Report abuse

Cov. is lacking is right...but I doubt they do, until spring training.

Posted by: Andrew Stebbins | September 28, 2008 6:22 PM | Report abuse

Just to clarify - the firings don't include Rick Eckstein, right?

Posted by: We hardly knew him | September 28, 2008 6:22 PM | Report abuse

Can you anti-St. Claire folks justify that? Everyone knows he's the best coach we have.

Posted by: You're insane! | September 28, 2008 6:25 PM | Report abuse

I think Epstein is still accounted for as a minor-league coach, so he's safe fore the moment.

Posted by: BIM | September 28, 2008 6:26 PM | Report abuse

The released coaches will become "un-named sources" for Ladson & the writers at the WashTimes in the off-season. I don't think the WaPo writers (excepting Boz) have the history to track down & talk to these guys, and Boz has bigger fish to fry as a columnist.

Posted by: BIM | September 28, 2008 6:38 PM | Report abuse

Any fired coach who would let a paper use their name with a quote bashing the team would never get another job, thus he's such a moron his opinion shouldn't be trusted anyway.

Posted by: estuartj | September 28, 2008 6:51 PM | Report abuse

He is currently investigating the rumor that there is a Nationals team playing in Woodbridge.

"Boz has bigger fish to fry as a columnist."

Posted by: reliable source | September 28, 2008 7:37 PM | Report abuse

Acta is the PROBLEM! The team outright quit on the man. He needs to be replaced before guys like Zimmerman decide to go elseway.

Posted by: Anti Acta | September 28, 2008 7:49 PM | Report abuse

I heard they also fired Betty the ticket hotline phone operator who platooned for Weird Ed during midweek day games . . . Thank God. She was a drag on the team.

"There are a lot of changes that we need to make to get where we want to get to. We are going to start 2009 [on Monday] morning," general manager Jim Bowden [said].

Right, Jimbo. Like changing to a GM who isn't in love inning-killing, attitude-challenged ex-Reds.

Posted by: rg019571 | September 28, 2008 8:09 PM | Report abuse

I have sick feeling that Bimbo will get renewed. I believe Kasten quits but retains his ownership interest.

Posted by: mjames | September 28, 2008 8:18 PM | Report abuse

By all means, cut the video coordinator, I am sure HE is the one responsible for tying up $20M in LoDuca, Lopez, Kearns and Estrada.

Posted by: Roy Hobbs | September 28, 2008 9:11 PM | Report abuse

How do you keep Robot Acta...the worst managerial handler of pitchers in MLB.......

This team is an after thought until they spend the $$$ for a competitive payroll in the NL EAst.....and hope it's not to late for free agents to want to come to a LOSER organization.

I still half believe the possibility that the failure to sign the #1 draft pick was orchestrated so they didn't have to spend ANY First Round $$$$$$$$

Posted by: unc1dmo | September 28, 2008 10:27 PM | Report abuse

Did these guys really deserve to lose their jobs? THE VIDEO GUY? Or is this just the way to generate the appearance of activity without spending any real $$$?
