It's Official: Rijo, Baez Out [Update]

From Barry in the Dominican, again:

Jose Rijo just emerged from a 10-minute meeting with Nationals officials, including assistant GM Mike Rizzo. He was relieved of his duties as a special assistant to General Manager Jim Bowden.

Also in the meeting was Fernando Ravelo, who is slated to take over the Nationals' operation in the Dominican. Ravelo is the GM of the Dominican's Tigres del Licey.

"I'm disappointed," he said before leaving the facility. "Not for me but for the other people who are losing their jobs. They shouldn't be in this position. They have nothing to do with this."

Rijo said that only two of the Nationals' Dominican coaching staff members will remain with the organization. Jose Baez, the manager of the Nationals' Dominican program, has also been let go, as have an undetermined number of additional coaches.

The more than 70 players in the Nationals' Dominican program are being sent home for the weekend. Officials have told them only that they will call them by Sunday to let them know where to report to work Monday morning.

Rizzo has been exploring other Dominican facilities including those in Boca Chica, where several major league teams base their programs.

Washington Nationals announce promotion of Chartese Burnett to Vice President of Communications and Community Relations
Burnett Will Launch & Oversee the Nationals Minority Outreach Efforts

Now that we've got that out of the way let's move on to that little matter of the GM, asst GM for the DR, etc. You know, the small stuff.

Maybe she's the one who's gonna hire the new minority GM. You got a problem with that? Somebody has to make sure they don't offer the job to Marion Barry, just to spite the DC Council.

Let the housecleaning begin...

We are extremely lucky to have Kasten sorting through this mess.

I say, good for Chartese.

"meeting with Nationals officials, including assistant GM Mike Rizzo."

Let's hope that's Interim GM Mike Rizzo by the end of the day.

No hate for JimBow here, but as many others have mention (I'm giving the hat tip to Brian at NFA though), regardless of what he did or didn't do, it is now IMPOSSIBLE for him to properly carry out the duties of his position.

"....General Manager Jim Bowden."

How many more times will you be able to slip that phrase in before it is no longer true?

I'm not of the rabid, vociferous, bloodthirsty, pitchfork-toting gang. But I'm hopeful that we'll get a person in that role that I can get behind.

...someone who can straighten out the FO and isn't a leper to their colleagues.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention: isn't a proven failure in terms of putting together teams who can win pennants.

Where's a DeLorean and a fueled-up flux capacitor when you need one...

Totally agree w/ desires of above posters to see change in GM.

However, my hunch on this move was that it means Rijo will take the fall and Bowden will somehow survive.

Remember the articles about how Mark Lerner supports him. Only one person has more authority in the organization than Mark and he calls that person "dad". So, Mark will be tough to overcome. Not saying it won't happen but I also wouldn't be shocked if JimBo survives this.

Good idea Ted. First we could go back and avoid signing Smiley, rescind the trade of Sizemore, Phillips and Lee for Bartolo Colon, and sign Aaron Crow, and then we could fast-forward to 2012 and watch a contender.

Bowden's not going anywhere.

Could also rescind the strike and the steroids era before we fast forward? In that case, I am so there.

I'm not sure if I love or hate the fact that Fernando Ravelo was in the meeting to dismiss Jose Rijo.

Dosn't this go against the mafia hit rule? If you have a guy whacked, you send the widow flowers, but you don't go to the funeral.

Maybe JimBow survives till Monday because Rizzo needs time to get the DR shop in order before he can come back to Vierra and take the reins as interim GM.

Rizzo's been "tainted" by Bowden cooties, LaCava all the way.

btw Bowden will probably slime his way out of this. If only we could get him to equate the Smiley signing to 9/11 then he'd be GONE!

While the "cooty theory" may have some merit, I believe that Rizzo was a Kasten hire and, if Kasten chooses to make a change, he will most likely go with his boy.
