Balester on Balester

Still 6-5 Nationals in the sixth, and all of the regulars have hit the showers. But here's Collin Balester's assessment of Collin Balester.

Both homers, Balester said, came on fastballs that were up in the zone. "I'm pushing the ball a little too much," he said.

"I think it was mainly my fastball I was leaving up," he continued, "because it was the pitch that got hit. I just got to make an adjustment."

Given that Balester has now given up four homers in his last two outings (spanning six innings), I asked him if he was discouraged at all.

"You can't get discouraged about it," he said. "You just got to hope it doesn't happen again and just work hard and that's all you can do. I'm not really discouraged at all."

Also, ran into Matt Chico in the clubhouse just now. He's due to throw to live hitters for the first time tomorrow. Still a long way from throwing in a real game, but a big step for the lefty, whose coming back from elbow surgery.

Seventh-inning stretch time, and it's still 6-5. And oh, by the way, Jaegler's wearing a nifty striped shirt, Slowes a blue golf shirt, and both are peering through their binoculars as the Astros make defensive replacements.

Haha, precisely. Nice touch: "a nifty striped shirt."

Langerhans with his 1st hit of Spring Training... "here's your nice parting gift, and thank you for playing"; next stop, SYR.

... it could yet turn out better, but this is my last report from:

... sixth is over. Neither team did anything worth noting.

... seven: Italy's CF gets his third double; then scores on a single. Then they add another scratched out run.

... 6 - 2 Italy; six outs to go.

... Canada just doesn't have the pitching to do the job (where's Shawn Hill when we need him?). But the lumber is strong, and it ain't over til Yogi says it is.

... I know it's the player's choice whether to play for their country or not, and I know a few from maany different countries had good reasons to say 'No'. But this Team Canada doesn't have Ryan Dempster, or Rich Hardin, or Eric Gagne, or Jeff Francis, or Eric Bedard (or Shawn Hill of course) pitching for them. With those guys on the roster, it could have been a very different Classic for Canada.

Dude, Barry. We've been asking the Matt Chico question for months and you just throw it in there casually in the first couple hours of your shift. Sigh. Don't go.

gotta be a way we can take up a collection to bribe stan kasten to ban the odious neal diamond's saccharine anthem 'sweet caroline' from being played in space coast stadium or nationals stadium, either one, ever. online contributions, checks, escrow account, just like before baseball came to DC when we were trying to get a team...

Casto's throwing bullpen sessions - that's good. He could be back as a LR/spot-starter in June or July. Memo to the Nationals' FO - STOP WITH "SWEET CAROLINE" ALREADY! Play some DC-Centric stuff instead (Chuck Brown, Fugees, etc).

Oops - Meant Chico, not Casto (he already plays four positions - adding RP is a bit much).
