Red Sox manager Terry Francona announced Tuesday that Chris Carter has captured the final spot on the 25-man roster.

Carter won the job over Jeff Bailey, and will serve as a backup first baseman and corner outfielder. He's hitting .359/.388/.703 with six home runs and 10 RBI this spring. Bailey will head to Triple-A Pawtucket.

[from previous thread]

... welcome to the world of building a credible baseball team. The city on the Tiber wasn't erected in twenty four hours, nor will a team with exceptional credentials arrive on our doorstep overnight in the back of a moving van.

... while we stand at the brink of something quite comely, looking ahead to what this team can and will be, the greatest temptation is to give up the long wait - especially when the future is at hand. The waiting gets infinitely more difficult as the possibility of success gets closer.

... we could probably make any number of trades giving up our base in exchange for younger and younger prospects. But let's not give up the ship too soon. We have a decidedly better team this spring that we had last. Let's give these guys a chance to woo our hearts before we send them all packing.

Why is Kearns hitting ahead of anyone let alone two of our better hitters?

Lifer - Chris Carter is the guy who went to Boston from AZ in the Fruto-WMP 3-way, right? I suppose there's a little bit of "what might have been" there, but the question is had we had him (and Willingham) would we have gone after Dunn? That's why I always have a bit of difficulty with cherry-picking the record of any GM (even our former loutish one) - one move made or not made invariably leads to other moves made or not made, and it's not like you could simply say "Gee, we should have just done Fruto for Carter" and expect that we still would have Olsen/Willingham or Dunn or Dukes for that matter.

They're trying to give him ABs so the rest of the league will want to trade for him. It hurts us a lot less when the games don't count. It's not like it's working or anything.

Uh oh, Big Meat with the three-run dinger. He can roll out of bed and still hit!! He should be working on his diabetes instead he's working on his hitting!!! Gotta think about keeping him on the 25-man baybee!! BIG-MEAT BIG-MEAT BIG-MEAT
