Zimmermann's Perfect Start
Jordan Zimmermann faced nine batters across three innings today, and it almost became hypnotic. Three up, three down. Three up, three down. Three up, three down. He struck out three, and looked very much like the sort of guy who belongs in a big league rotation. Either that, or the Syracuse Chiefs will have a perfect central figure for their early-season marketing promos.
Zimmermann threw 34 pitches -- 13 in the first, 11 in the second, 10 in the third.
Collin Balester, Zimmermann's primary competition for a spot in the rotation, will take the mound next.
Tough act to follow.

Looking good so far, though not exactly a murderous row line-up by the Mets today.
Posted by: cokedispatch | March 4, 2009 2:00 PM | Report abuse
I'm bettin' the Met's line-up looks a little a bit more like murder's row to a kid who is only facing big league hitters for his second time.

... I'm glad I'm late. I was just about to say the same thing, cokedispatch, but I do believe lowcountry has given the ultimate in responses.

Bally's already beat. He gives up a solo HR to Fernando Tatis.

And then a 3-run shot to Ramon Castro. Yikes.

Looks like Chico's got his storyline for tomorrow mapped out for him -- the Tale of Two Young Pitchers (best of times, worst of times and all that).

New post up on Bally Star blog;
"Here we go Sky Chiefs, here we go!"
One rough inning does not a bad spring training make, but with Manny having J-Zimm and Bally going head to head for the last spot in the rotation and then have J-Zimm performing his role as the Zim Reaper and Bally giving up two dingers does not bode well for Colin...
Posted by: estuartj | March 4, 2009 2:28 PM | Report abuse
A little set back for Bally perhaps. Still, this line-up shouldn't strke fear considering who isn't in it.

Dunn 0-2 and playing 1b for USA today. No strikeouts so far though...

Hard for me to tell for sure because my box score hasn't changed in a half-hour (is it raining?) but it looks like Bally contained it to one bad inning.

Nice game for us. We hang 6 on two starters from a team that is supposed to contend. Zimermann is great and Mock and Bergmann hold in the pen.
If (imagine large font) we can get that to be a pattern, we could cause some trouble in the NL East.

lol...
JiM, one or two ST game does not a competition make. let's see where they stand on march 15th or march 22nd before trying to decide if one is the winner or loser. for all we know bally could go on a scoreless tear and zimm could get shelled twice in the next 10 days (not that i'm wishing that on him). it'll take more than one nice outing to secure that spot or one mediocre outing to lose it.

... a good win today. Zimm with two 'n's did a masterful job; Collin showed good recovery, as did the team having lost the lead. All in all, a good day. And it was good to follow along with the rest of you via the box score.
... however I really do wish we could hear - on a regular gameday basis - from Manny ... and Randy and Rick and Gus Grissom and Riggles et al on their reactions to what they learned from the game, what steps forward the team made, what players have solidified their position and which ones maybe have dropped a peg or two.
... as much as I like to use this forum to read the entrails as much as the next guy (and in my world, even girls are guys), that's the kind of thing I want to get out of ST.

oops, i may have blamed JiM for what he quoted. sorry, bud.
Posted by: sec231 | March 4, 2009 4:48 PM | Report abuse
Haha, since it was my original quote that JiMpls carried forward, let me clarify: Tatis beat Balester today, not Zimmermann.
Zimmermann didn't get beat by any hitters today, Balester did.
Okay, clarification over. As everyone else has said, there's another month of spring training to go. Hooray for baseball!
