It's After 1 A.M.
Wow, we go into extra innings. It's 1:06. This has been a crazy night. Lots of squandered opportunities for the Nats; they were one out away in the ninth from botching yet another bases loaded, one-out chance. It would have been the fourth time all night. But, with two outs against closer Mike Gonzalez, they just managed to scrap together a run to tie the game at 5.
The situation: After Wil Nieves struck out on a full count for Out No. 2 -- he swung at ball four -- Lastings Milledge came to the plate. On an 0-2 pitch, he pounded the ball back at the pitcher's mound. Gonzalez swung his arm around, trying to stab at the ball, and actually deflected it back toward the first base-side on-deck circle. That allowed Nick Johnson to score.
In the bottom of the ninth, Joe Beimel got out of a minor jam with two aboard, and now we're in extras.

Damn... i thought that ball was deeper in the hole than that... Dukes doesn't exactly have a piano on his back. Good throw by the SS.

I was praying that throw from SS would pull the 1B off the bag. Oh well.
Do it again Beimel (how about 1-2-3 this time).

Has anyone added up how many times in these first four games the Nats have had bases loaded with zero or one outs and failed to score? It feels like a lot.

Real question here: how fast is Dukes? Everytime something's written about him it seems to focus on his speed/power combo, but it's certainly no elite. We all know that he's a great all-around athlete, but I have trouble viewing him as a guy with plus speed. Maybe it's just his size that does it. What do you think? If you had to compare him to another MLB player, who might it be?

SIXTEEN runners stranded by the Nats after 10 innings.
I know it's early in the season, but I haven't seen anything hitting coach Eckstein has done to help, compared to last year...

Yeah, our clutch hitting tonight has been bad. So frustrating to watch.

Anybody remember how many runners the Nats left on base last year and how that compared to other teams?
I get the feeling that with all the offensive "upgrades" the FO made in the offseason, things haven't changed that much...

In the President's Club you can drink until 45 minutes after the game. It's probably the same way there.

On that note... See ya in a few days NJ. I'm off to the great state of FLA - to the Hap, hap, happiest place on earth.
It's a small world after all. It's a small world after all. It's a small world after all. It's a small, small world.

BOY has it been a long offseason.
This was the first gsme I actually paid attention to this season, starting with listening to Charlie and Dave on the radio the first couple innings, then MASN TV later (we got DIBBLE as an analyst?!?).
Despite the loss, yeah, I'm a Nats fan. I do love watching this game.

'Cuz despite Wil Nieves' scream-inducing, ulcer-causing swing at a game-tying BB, these guys still battled.

I'm loving Dunn's ability to get on base. 3 BBs tonight. Billy Beane would love this guy!
