Thanks, Tracee. Everything in my life should work as smoothly as you running NJ!

I like Colome. Remember how Manny once said he should be our allstar last year? Plus his name is fun to say and he had the funniest Nats injury to date.

Definitely an upgrade over Kensing, who we never should've traded for.

Man, I hate to admit it...but that Phillies lineup is ridiculous! Look at that top six...

Why does Manny Acta keep playing Austin Kearns? He has not hit for two seasons. Sit him down and play Willingham. Willingham has power and, unlike Kearns, he hits in the clutch. His BA would likely improve if he played regularly. Right now, he is being jerked around.

COMBEDGE: Yeah look at their lineup same line up that just got swept three straight by the Manny-less Dodgers and at the phillies home park no less! ain't noboby scared of no stinkin phillies!

Completely agree on Kearns. he started out OK this season, but now he's plummeting back down to where he was last year.

Because flanking your center fielder with two terrible fielders like Dunn and Willigham would be dangerous even if your centre fielder was Carlos Gomez or Tori Hunter. Dukes is average in the field. And our pitchers give up a lot of fly balls.

Our defense needs fixing. This is a small step towards that. A better step would be to sign a damn centre fielder and put Dukes back in right.

phillies are loaded with lefties. they will pepper right field. do not put dunn out there. you will waste starters and your bullpen. manny knows what he is doing.

That's the spirit, dargreg.

The good news: Victorino's in a bad slump; hitless again yesterday. Hope he stays cold.

Posted by: nats24 | May 15, 2009 4:57 PM | Report abuse

victorino is sure to hammer us and kearns continuing to be the everyday guy eats away at my soul, I die a little inside with every fastball on the inner half he has no chance of touching, kearns can't get traded and he won't be here next year, give ham the time already

Why is Clippard not getting a shot in the pen with those sick AAA numbers?

Posted by: goexpos2 | May 15, 2009 5:16 PM | Report abuse

Would love to see Maxwell full time in CF but the OF logjam has to be cleared first. Any trade rumors?

Posted by: derwink | May 15, 2009 5:20 PM | Report abuse

It kills me that we don't have a centre fielder, except on in AAA. Who has to rot there while we figure out what to do with the Bowden poster children Willigham and Kearns.

Posted by: soundbloke | May 15, 2009 5:23 PM | Report abuse

Look at Bergmann's, Stammen's, and Clippard's stats in AAA:
http://syracuse.chiefs.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?t=t_ibp&cid=552&stn=true&sid=t552

Those three must be going nuts, playing great in Syracuse, not getting their shot in the bigs, and watching guys like Cabrera, Kensing, Mock, and Hanrahan struggle (mightily) with the big club.

I'm going nuts, I can tell you that.

For the starters, I think there'll be changes after the double-header on Saturday. For the relievers, I don't think they'll be another wholesale change (not like the last one worked so well.) So now that Colome came back for Kensing, the next drop down will be at the earliest next week.

Be patient, not everything has to happen NOW. Rome wasn't built in a day. You think a baseball team is any easier?

Look at Bergmann's, Stammen's, and Clippard's

Clippard was a starter last year. He is learning to be a reliever. I'm not sure about Bergmann, I suspect its because he would represent yet another right handed pitcher and he still has options. And they still need to find out about him. There is decent competition in the International League right now. Stammen is new. He's a starter. Right now the starters are doing okay. What they need is a closer. Hanrahan maybe would be better off as a starter? There is only one decent closer in the draft. They could probably get him in the 10th round. Even though he looks the best he is shaky.

They need good, solid, winning attitude veterans on that pitching staff to stabilize it. Not more rookie cannon fodder to shoot out of Rizzo and Kasten's cannon. That isn't going to work. And they need someone other than Acta, an arrogant SOB like Frank Robby was.

Just don't be wasting talent on getting bullpen pitchers, the least reliable commodity in baseball.

Posted by: Section506 | May 15, 2009 6:22 PM | Report abuse

I agree with Soundbloke that they need to fix the defense, but they should bring up Langerhans, not Maxwell. Maxwell is not ready for MLB pitching on a regular basis, and they will hurt his development badly by exposing him to it right now. I know that he is older for a prospect, but because of all the time that he has missed through injuries, he needs to get the at bats in AAA. Langerhans is seasoned, an excellent fielder and has a chance to hit .250/.350. That is a step down from what Kearns/Willingham would contribute, but the runs prevented would at least even things out.

They need to do this, not because it would necessarily result in more wins (although I think it will), but because it will help develop the pitchers, all of them (except cabrera, who is a lost cause without his velocity). Dukes to right, Dunn never leaves left. Willingham becomes a corner OF/1B spot starter. Kearns, even though I like him and think he is playing much better than last year, is the odd man out.

"Maxwell is not ready for MLB pitching on a regular basis, and they will hurt his development badly by exposing him to it right now."

Just to anticipate some of the criticism of this, Willy2 is right that MLB pitching could hurt him. Not because he is fragile, but because a player needs to learn how to make adjustments and facing a AAA pitcher, he can learn how to do that and how not to do that. He stands a chance of making adjustments as fast as they are making adjustments to him.

With major league pitchers, they can adjust much faster than he can, so he never learns how to make adjustments.

As I was typing this it sounded surprisingly like Lastings Milledge. What do you all think?

Posted by: Section506 | May 15, 2009 6:55 PM | Report abuse

I disagree with you Kearns haters. Have you seen Willingham up at the plate? He looks lost - and he had some issues in the field over the road trip. Yeah, Kearns has had some rough AB's too - but at least you can feel good about him being out in RF.

Posted by: PattyinSJ | May 15, 2009 6:55 PM | Report abuse

Also - I don't think Dukes is that bad in CF. We have all seen worse.

Posted by: PattyinSJ | May 15, 2009 6:58 PM | Report abuse

Where's Charlie & Dave? I can't seem to get Charlie and Dave on mlb.com!! ACK!! (hyperventilating)

Posted by: NatsNut | May 15, 2009 7:04 PM | Report abuse

Patty

Dukes is not all that bad but, he is stuck between a combination of Kearns (overrated range), Willingham (bad range) and Dunn (oh dear). Dukes has good range for a right fielder and decent range for a center fielder.

I am unable to get the gameday audio feed to work as well. I thought it was just my computer acting up (again)

Posted by: NeedANatsFix | May 15, 2009 7:24 PM | Report abuse

For some reason the MASN audio is on MLB.com's Gameday Audio. WTF?

Posted by: leetee1955 | May 15, 2009 7:25 PM | Report abuse

Most of Dukes problems in Center can be attributed to inexperience. He didn't learn how to play this position in the minors, remember. Most of his minor league stats show him in left field, if it specifies.

Finally got it to work and realized that it is the MASN feed. I like Dibble...but this sucks.

glad it's not just me. I was seriously panicking and scurried to find the radio channel the old fashioned way. Found them on 1500 am. (big exhale, shoulders relax)

Gameday Audio isalso carrying the Phillies TV feed as well. Must be some problem in NatsTown.

I also had to switch to the real radio.

Here is the address
customerservice@website.mlb.com

to send your email to mlb.com and tell them, "Gameday is broken! It is has audio Rob/Bob instead of Charlie/Dave." Blech!

Comforted by seeing that others share my pain (no Charlie & Dave). Nu post up.
