While The Rain Falls At Nationals Park ...

The giant white tarp has been spread out across the infield diamond. The teams have retreated to their respective clubhouses. And since there's not a whole lot else to do here in the press box, here's an interesting tidbit:

Should this game be suspended, Ryan Zimmerman's hit streak would stand in limbo. Yep, even though Zimmerman tallied a single in the sixth and another in the eighth, neither will count officially until the game is completed.

So Zimmerman would enter tomorrow's game at Los Angeles riding a 22-game hitting streak, same as he was when he woke up this morning.

Say Zimmerman were to continue his streak tomorrow and the next game and the next game, all the way until it reached 43 games (one shy of Pete Rose's National League record). Then say Zimmerman's streak was halted at 43 games. There would still be a chance he could tie the record months from now or at whatever point this game were completed.

Wierd, huh? But, of course, this is all hypothetical for the time being.

Intriguing. We need a name for the adoration of Steve Yanda. Yandamania?

Well now that Yanda just put the hex on Zimm, his hitting streak is doomed.

Hopefully Houston puts Fulchino or Paulino (two of the pitchers we scored on yesterday) out instead of Hawkins when play resumes.

Yanda's bored.

What are the chances this game is not finished today??

Posted by: PattyinSJ | May 5, 2009 4:58 PM | Report abuse

Just wondering, couldn't they use Lannan to pinch hit? He's bettre than Hanrahan anyways. And it's not as if Lannan can pitch today.

I'm thinking that they'll get the rest in after about a two hour and change delay. Looks like the storm is about half way through the District.

Posted by: Kev29 | May 5, 2009 5:05 PM | Report abuse

They've got a plane to catch, so waiting 2-3 hours for a game that could go on and on means a very late night/early morning. Expect sleep walking for tomorrow night's game.

Whoohoo - they're coming out to the west coast! I hope to see them on Wednesday in SF.

Oooh, Fanda is good.

Bring a sign Patty, maybe we'll spot ya on TV.

Honestly, I'd be more concerned about having to say I'm from St. Paul than I would be about anonymity.

Ah, rivalries.

JiM--I thought "Brian" was a handle you used on the radio to maintain your anonymity.

They've been talking about this hitting streak since it was at 7 or 8. I think if it were going to get hexed, it would have happened by now.

When a game is suspended, does anyone know the effect of any roster changes that take place before the game resumes? Can players that were not on the roster today play when the game is completed?

Posted by: ThatsRich | May 5, 2009 5:36 PM | Report abuse

Seems like ther needs to be some repercussions for the type of boneheaded play Nieves made throwing wildly to second on a sacrifice bunt. Thanks to the 3 unearned runs The Nats are sitting out an extra innings rain delay before heading to LA. For a backup that's dumber than dumb.
He seems like a nice guy but this club cannot afford to keep making these little league mistakes. Lets give Bard a try, besides, Nieves has done nothing at the plate.

Yes they can. In fact there have been cases where players have played on both teams because of trades that were made in between the suspension and completion of the game.

LOL, wow suspended til July 9th!

Posted by: rxs85 | May 5, 2009 5:51 PM | Report abuse

The game has been suspended. It will be resumed on the 11th.

Posted by: JohninMpls | May 5, 2009 5:51 PM | Report abuse

11th? What was I talking about?

July 9th.

Don't try to do two things at once, people.

Posted by: JohninMpls | May 5, 2009 5:52 PM | Report abuse

@Sackman -

No unearned runs (yet). The play was scored a Fielder's Choice and, since the runner did not advance on the throw, no error was assessed.

Now there should be repercussions for a hideous "Fielder's choice," but Olsen had to eat the runs.

Posted by: WebberDC | May 5, 2009 5:53 PM | Report abuse

Well, thanks to the 'pen, the Nats head west at 7-17, rather than 8-17 and without much momentum.

Bummer. Oh well.

Should I save my stub from today's game? Can I use it on July 11th?

Posted by: comish4lif | May 5, 2009 6:10 PM | Report abuse

July 9th in Houston... nevermind.

Posted by: comish4lif | May 5, 2009 6:11 PM | Report abuse

Strange that they would suspend now, the rain is almost past.

Posted by: BobLHead | May 5, 2009 6:13 PM | Report abuse

So, with a suspended game... how come none of the online box scores have the attendance for today?

I'm pretty sure there were not 10,000 people there - yet they ran out of Tuesday T-shirts.

Posted by: comish4lif | May 5, 2009 6:14 PM | Report abuse

I think Bob mentioned that the paid attendance was 19,000 something.

Posted by: rxs85 | May 5, 2009 6:21 PM | Report abuse

That should be fun... the Nats being the home team at Minute Maid Park, with a runner on base in extra innings.

Those suspended games rarely go very long once they're resumed.

Advantage: Nats

It is for me to poop on

Steve:

Your point about the hitting streak is (almost) moot, because we know that the game will (almost certainly be) completed, and that Zim already has a hit. The only way he wouldn't have extended his streak will be if the game isn't completed.

What is true is that the streak won't be official until the game is official, or when Zim goes hitless, whichever is later.

Posted by: wigi | May 5, 2009 6:58 PM | Report abuse

Like I said last night, one mistake and you throw somebody under the bus. I bet if you lose a paper clip at work they don't fire you for it. IT IS A GAME not the end of the world.

Posted by: natsguy | May 5, 2009 7:02 PM | Report abuse

glad he got a hit. Willingham can't hit, field, or run.

Posted by: 6thandD | May 5, 2009 7:03 PM | Report abuse

>Willingham can't hit, field, or run

The only way it would be possible to say that is if Acta is manager. He can't play one out of four. Nobody can. Makes you look old and stiff, especially when it's still cold. I blame it on Manny. Fee Simple Manny.

ho ho ho Manny Acta got to go

AHORA

Posted by: Brue | May 5, 2009 7:21 PM | Report abuse

So with your logic and going along with what wigi is saying, Zimm's streak will automatically have one tacked on to to the end of it as long the game is completed (since he already has a hit in it). If the streak stops one shy of Rose's record, he would have 100% chance of tying it.

Posted by: nickel014 | May 5, 2009 7:32 PM | Report abuse

I was at the game today. Fun.

One thing that pi**ed me off to no end, however, is that both Dukes and Dunn, when they field a ball, HOLD THE DAMN THING FOR 5 SECONDS BEFORE LOBBING IT IN! No matter what the runners are doing.

I'm trying not to scream in my living room right now just thinking about it. Guys are motoring around the bases and both Dunn and Dukes are playing like they're shagging balls in batting practice.

IT'S INFURIATING!!!!!!! MAKE THEM WORK FOR THOSE BASES!!! PLEASE!!!
