After 12 Innings and a 2-Hour Delay, the Nationals Lose

[UPDATE| 1:25 a.m.] It is over. Mercifully, it is over. The Nationals lost, 4-2, in 12 innings to the Cincinnati Reds after a 2 hour 10 minute rain delay.

Jason Bergmann made a good pitch against Cincinnati's Jonny Gomes in the 12th inning, spinning a diving and seemingly unhittable curveball. But Gomes golfed it into left field to score Jay Bruce, who represented the go-ahead run. The next batter, Jerry Hairston, scored Gomes on a liner to left field. That was all the Reds needed. Washington will try to avoid the sweep tomorrow -- er, later today -- in the third and final game of this series.

______________________________________________________________________________

[UPDATE| 11:26 p.m.] There will be more baseball tonight. After much confusion, a Nationals spokesman announced in the press box that the estimated restart time of the game is 11:40 p.m. The tarp has just been removed and it barely appears to be misting outside, nothing that would bother a baseball game.
______________________________________________________________________________

[UPDATE | 10:46 p.m.] The grounds crew walked onto the field at 10:34 p.m., removed the tarp and drained the excess water from the field. Ten minutes later, almost all of the workers left the field. And just a few minutes later, the members of the Reds bullpen strolled off of the field. Nobody in the press box is quite sure what is happening. I will update you when I have more information.

______________________________________________________________________________

Three outs separated the Nats from another loss. Then a heavy rainstorm threw itself in between those familiar bedfellows. (OK, I just wanted to use that word.) Anyway, at 9:29, lightning cracked. Then the rain -- a drizzle for the last few innings -- went from near-zero to 60 in a few seconds. Josh Willingham, that wise vet, stepped out of the box. And umps signaled for the delay.

The groundskeepers jumped into motion.

The official relay delay began at 9:30.

The situation:

Cincinnati 2, Washington 0.
Bottom of the ninth.
Runner on first, no outs.
Willingham up, 3-2 count.

Does anyone see this going any other way than having the game called?

Posted by: Naugatuck-Nats | June 10, 2009 9:39 PM | Report abuse

Depends on the storm and how long it looks like it will hang around. If I am the Nats I want to try to finish the game. We have this one last chance - and with no outs, a runner on, Willingham at the plate with a 3-2 count and only down 2-0, we do still have a chance.

Posted by: bigmook | June 10, 2009 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Neither team is going anywhere. They have a game here tomorrow. They'll wait all night if need be to finish this one. Barring a Nats rally they only need a short window of opportunity to complete the game.

Posted by: nunof1 | June 10, 2009 9:48 PM | Report abuse

I'm feeling a comeback...if they wait long enough they won't have to face Cordero...and they already have a runner on. I'm feelin' it, baby!!!

MASN2 just went to C-SPAN on my Comcast system. Maybe our game will continue on MASN proper? Os Extra now finished.

Posted by: Kev29 | June 10, 2009 10:02 PM | Report abuse

If or when the games renews, the Nationals had better win it in the bottom of the 9th; One on, none out, but with Taverez, Colome, & maybe Villone or Bergmann left in the bullpen should the game go into the 10th.

uh can someone tell me why Zim just bunted?! Wasting outs, I really don't get this team. Why would he bunt with no one on and down two? This team confuses me. :/

Posted by: rachel216

Smart move by a veteran player. If he gets on, Dunn represents the tying run at the plate. Didn't work, but it was a good thought.

Posted by: joebleux | June 10, 2009 10:23 PM | Report abuse

Zimbo has a better chance getting on swinging the bat.

Posted by: mherd1 | June 10, 2009 10:30 PM | Report abuse

Or Manny pretending he can manage. What's Zim's bunting BA?

We are getting no top and bottom of the hour cut-ins updating the sutation from MASN. Instead, ESPNews, with its usual overkill on the AL East's two evil empires meeting in Boston.

Of course, last night MASN had a rebroadcast of an interview with Baltimore broadcaster Joe Angel at the exact moment Stephen Strasburg was being drafted.

Posted by: VPaterno | June 10, 2009 10:38 PM | Report abuse

@SOT: Look it up, you lazy putz. Zimmerman bunted for a handful of hits in 2005-2006 under FRobby, but stopped until recently, given the amount of offensive support the team was providing. He has the bat control, but as a #3 with little offensive support in 2007-2008, that option dried up.

Posted by: BinM | June 10, 2009 10:40 PM | Report abuse

How soon they forget. In 2006 Zimmerman had something like 19 or 20 bunt base hits. Then, probably because there was no offense anywhere else in the lineup, he quit throwing in the odd surprise bunt to get on. Glad to see him doing it again. It makes sense if he's up with no one on to start an inning. Get on base, start a rally. Of course he's not doing it in an RBI situation.

And it's not Manny's call, it's Zim's. That was confirmed last winter at the NatsFest when some bozo kept asking Manny in the Q&A sessions how come he never let Zim bunt. Manny said he's free to bunt whenever he wants to.

Posted by: nunof1 | June 10, 2009 10:47 PM | Report abuse

From Wikipedia, describing Zimm's 2006 season: "He led all Major Leaguers with 10 or more bunts in bunt hit percentage, at 83.3% with 10 bunt hits."

Posted by: baltova1 | June 10, 2009 10:48 PM | Report abuse

How many attempts? What's the success rate? Is it .320?

Posted by: mherd1 | June 10, 2009 10:48 PM | Report abuse

@BinM

Digging up stats is probably not something I have a lot of time for just at this moment. But thanks to your generous, accomodating nature obviously Zim bunting is not the ideal choice. His choice? Probably not.

Posted by: SaveOurTeam | June 10, 2009 10:52 PM | Report abuse

So after all this they can't play 3 more outs?

Posted by: amorris525 | June 10, 2009 10:54 PM | Report abuse

@baltova1

THAT is a useful response. Thanks.

Posted by: SaveOurTeam | June 10, 2009 10:55 PM | Report abuse

"How many attempts? What's the success rate? Is it .320?"

You passed the post in the night, metaphorically. It's .833 according to baltova's stats. I'm assuming that eliminates sacrifice bunts, but that might not be true.

Posted by: Section506 | June 10, 2009 10:57 PM | Report abuse

Oh, and to SaveOurTeam's concern, I would say that Zim bunting with no one on base and no outs is not a bad idea at all, considering Dunn and Dukes are behind him. But a Zimm sac bunt makes no sense.

Yeah, I know, call me out. A stats guy who believes in bunting.

20 minutes later... any update?

Posted by: nervousnatsfan | June 10, 2009 11:07 PM | Report abuse

Chico,

I hope ultimately that you will do some real reporting and find out for us whether Rizzo's story about Storen's contract coming together in a day is truthful, or not. Perhaps it is, but perhaps it isn't. You've got to admit, the whole thing is a bit miraculous that a guy would just agree to go below slot within a day of getting drafted, and that Rizzo and the Nats--while in the midst of the incredibly intense draft process--would have the time and energy to negotiate the deal.

It's no secret that teams and players have prearranged deals, sometimes for below slot. Michael Lewis beat this topic to death in his book, and Billy Beane reveled in doing it. And there's no sin in it, either. The question, in my mind, is if the Nats and Storen had a prearranged deal, why wouldn't Rizzo just fess up to it or, at minimum, not lie about it? Fans don't like feeling like they are being lied to--and as of now, a lot of fans have this nagging belief that that's what's going on when they hear Rizzo's "best player available" talk and the contract that magically came together in a day. And that has nothing to do with whether they like they pick or not--we just want the organization to be straight about its process or, at minimum, keep quiet rather than lie.

I've tried to defend MASN this season - but what a joke. We don't even know which channel (showing other programming) to look at for (no) updates. If the network doesn't care about the game - why should we?

@Sec506

I should have taken BinM's advice and looked it up or not bother saying anything. Going by his response it didn't sound like Zim bunting was a great idea. Having read baltova1's response it's obviously a different story. If he's not all that practiced at it this year though you'd think it would be a lower percentage way to go. I don't remember Zim bunting much this season and last so...

Posted by: SaveOurTeam | June 10, 2009 11:33 PM | Report abuse

Thanks Chico. Did MASN (Mr. Angelo's Sh---y Network) get the memo about the game resuming? Here in Wild West Fairfax, Cox has O's reruns on MASN (!) and now encore college baseball on MASN2. On MASN2, we've been getting the top and bottom-of-the-hour updates from Johnny and Rob (until, oddly enough, just now at 11:30, as there has been no update since 11), but they've been useless..."It's raining, the tarp is still on the field, and we hope to resume at some point." 15 seconds max, and no useful information.

Imagine if it was Hanrahan instead of Macdougal....

Posted by: FloresFan | June 11, 2009 12:23 AM | Report abuse

And we still have Villone. McCatty for mayor.

Posted by: nattaboy | June 11, 2009 12:27 AM | Report abuse

We have to win this game. Have to.

Posted by: FloresFan | June 11, 2009 12:30 AM | Report abuse

loud bad wordy from Belliard there, can't blame him though, given the high strike call on the previous pitch

Tonight is not the night for Villone to have marred his 0.0 ERA.

Posted by: nervousnatsfan | June 11, 2009 12:37 AM | Report abuse

hooboy.

Posted by: nattaboy | June 11, 2009 12:37 AM | Report abuse

I see the umps still suck. Angel Hernandez must have an early tee time tomorrow (today). And our defense, or lack thereof, may cost us this one...

Posted by: BGinVA | June 11, 2009 12:37 AM | Report abuse

We need a strikeout in the worst possible way, Bergmann...

Posted by: BGinVA | June 11, 2009 12:39 AM | Report abuse

What happened on the passed ball? Why did Villone leave in the middle of the AB?

Posted by: nervousnatsfan | June 11, 2009 12:39 AM | Report abuse

wow, nice!

Posted by: hats4bats | June 11, 2009 12:40 AM | Report abuse

nice D!

Posted by: nattaboy | June 11, 2009 12:40 AM | Report abuse

Well, if Villone's ERA is longer 0.00, he will have no one to blame but himself, with the leadoff walk and his error.

Nice DP there!

Posted by: BGinVA | June 11, 2009 12:40 AM | Report abuse

Well played, gentlemen, well played.

Posted by: HotNats | June 11, 2009 12:40 AM | Report abuse

Ahhh, dammitall

Posted by: HotNats | June 11, 2009 12:41 AM | Report abuse

That's all folks!!!!!

Posted by: BGinVA | June 11, 2009 12:41 AM | Report abuse

Well, we had to score to win anyway. Right?

Ouch. Not 2.

Posted by: nattaboy | June 11, 2009 12:42 AM | Report abuse

on passed ball, zim charged plate to defend bunt, but ss went to cover 2nd, leaving 3rd uncovered.

and with those 2 runs, i'm calling it a night. somebody cheer extra for me.

Posted by: hats4bats | June 11, 2009 12:42 AM | Report abuse

Third out, but a second run scores. Oh, and Villone's ERA is still 0.00 since the run was unearned as a result of his error.

Posted by: BGinVA | June 11, 2009 12:43 AM | Report abuse

Bergie!! Dah...

Posted by: SaveOurTeam | June 11, 2009 12:45 AM | Report abuse

Allrighty, Austin 'Ears' Kearns, impress me

Posted by: HotNats | June 11, 2009 12:45 AM | Report abuse

What we need here is a 2 hour rain delay

Posted by: nattaboy | June 11, 2009 12:45 AM | Report abuse

AK's swing is sooooooo looooooooong

Posted by: nattaboy | June 11, 2009 12:46 AM | Report abuse

Kearns... *sigh*

Posted by: SaveOurTeam | June 11, 2009 12:46 AM | Report abuse

that's one stat quirk that needs fixing: I also felt that a pitchers errors should not count as unearned runs. They're entirely responsible for them. A loophole that could be closed.

Posted by: hats4bats | June 11, 2009 12:47 AM | Report abuse

did i just hear the clap and charge chords....with like 20 people in the stands....too funny!

Posted by: JCinDC | June 11, 2009 12:49 AM | Report abuse

any hope? probably not. sigh...

Posted by: BGinVA | June 11, 2009 12:49 AM | Report abuse

I hope we don't trade Nick. I like him.

Posted by: nattaboy | June 11, 2009 12:49 AM | Report abuse

at least that ball four was not called a strike...

Posted by: BGinVA | June 11, 2009 12:50 AM | Report abuse

yes we can

Posted by: nattaboy | June 11, 2009 12:51 AM | Report abuse

Agreed, nattaboy, a true gamer.
And is there hope? A bit. We got the man on, and the heart of the order up. Here's hoping!!!

Posted by: HotNats | June 11, 2009 12:51 AM | Report abuse

See you all at 4:35 this afternoon. Maybe.

Posted by: BGinVA | June 11, 2009 12:52 AM | Report abuse

And then... dammit dammit dammit.
G'nite all.

Posted by: HotNats | June 11, 2009 12:52 AM | Report abuse

Oh well.

Posted by: SaveOurTeam | June 11, 2009 12:53 AM | Report abuse

Goodnight everyone. See ya tomorrow afternoon!

Posted by: NickfromGermantown | June 11, 2009 12:55 AM | Report abuse

and now the excuses....blame it on the rain....it couldn't possibly be the erros.....0-9 in extra innings games is pathetic.

Posted by: JCinDC | June 11, 2009 12:56 AM | Report abuse

Maybe our guys will find some bats under their pillows when they wake up. Here's hopin'!

Posted by: SaveOurTeam | June 11, 2009 12:57 AM | Report abuse

Maybe these guys need to go to Hagerstown to figure out how to come back. Hagerstown pulled off the extra inning comeback tonight that the big club could not.

So sad. This could have been Bergmann's big moment to take a leap forward.

Kearns is not a major leaguer, and Belliard's starting to look AAAA as well. Especially when Gonzalez has proven to be better than him at pinch hitting.

Posted by: souldrummer | June 11, 2009 1:17 AM | Report abuse

Gonzalez looks good enough to trade Guzman. And that's the best trade bait, in addition to pitching, this team has to offer.

Posted by: periculum | June 11, 2009 1:19 AM | Report abuse

If a pitcher's errors led to earned runs, then his earned run average wouldn't be a pitching stat any more, it would be a pitching plus fielding stat. Plus, would you want to muck up things by creating another category of team unearned runs? The existing version of those is confusing enough.
I think taking the L in this situation is all the statistical justice due to Villone.

What's the magic number for the Nats to clinch the winning ticket in the Bryce Harper sweepstakes?

Posted by: fischy | June 11, 2009 1:33 AM | Report abuse

I saw Storen pitch against Oregon State on the 23rd. He looked very good against a very good OSU team.

Posted by: natsguy | June 11, 2009 2:02 AM | Report abuse

Wow will we EVER win a game in extra innings? sheesh.

Posted by: rachel216 | June 11, 2009 6:16 AM | Report abuse

7 more drafts ought to do it. I don't think mother nature likes the Nats. I hope this is only a nightmare and that I'll wake up and laugh all this off.

Posted by: cokedispatch | June 11, 2009 7:32 AM | Report abuse

The annoying thing is the last few extras we've lost the BP actually lasted a couple innings but we couldn't get any runs on the board.

Posted by: SaveOurTeam | June 11, 2009 7:33 AM | Report abuse

I noticed that as well. And they say newspapers are dying...
