Beimel Traded to Rockies (Updated)

From the clubhouse in Pittsburgh comes this update:

The Nick Johnson trade to Florida fell through and he'll be uniform for the Nationals tonight.

The team did, however, trade Joe Beimel to the Colorado Rockies for two minor-leaguers. Not sure which two yet, though. Will post with update soon.

Marlins "say" their pursuit of NJ is done...

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9875596/MLB-trade-deadline-buzz:-Friday%27s-edition

Sources: Marlins end pursuit of Johnson — Updated 3:12 p.m.

With less than an hour to go to the non-waiver deadline, the Marlins ended their quests to land Nationals first baseman Nick Johnson and Padres closer Heath Bell, according to major-league sources.

"Dead and over," one source said of both pursuits.

The Marlins offered Class AAA right-hander Ryan Tucker and another minor leaguer for Johnson, but talks stalled when the Nationals asked for Class AA left-hander Aaron Thompson.

Stupid question time: IF the Nats want to trade NJ after 4 PM today, he would have to pass thru waivers.

What about those that he is being traded for? Does it apply to those on the 40 man roster or ANY player on the other team?

Posted by: TimDz | July 31, 2009 3:29 PM | Report abuse

brue, I'll try to avoid the name calling that has broken out in other areas here recently. I just would have thought that if you believed sign and trade deals happened in baseball, you would have, you know, been able to name one.

Somebody else mentioned the Johan Santana deal. Here's the USA Today story announcing that deal:

"The Mets, ridiculed in New York for inactivity since their season-ending collapse last season, won the biggest prize of the winter, reaching an agreement to acquire two-time Cy Young winner Johan Santana from the Minnesota Twins.
With a 72-hour negotiating window set to close at 5 p.m. ET Friday, Mets officials met with agent Peter Greenberg in Manhattan on Wednesday, but neither side would divulge details, according to the Associated Press.

Santana — a two-time Cy Young Award winner elgible for free agency after the season — would have to waive a no-trade clause."

That's not really a sign and trade, although obviously the Mets had a pretty good feeling they would be able to sign him once they got him. But that's not a sign and trade.

Meanwhile, goodbye and good luck to Joe Beimel, an entertaining guy to watch.

Why are so many of us against trading the players on this team? We are the worst team in baseball for 2 years running. Change is good, because the status quo is AWFUL. I think we missed a huge opportunity to get a piece that will have value in a couple years, choosing istead to keep Mr. Glass who will be gone in 3 months either way. But, based on the previous poll, I'm in the minority with this opinion.

I believe the players on the other team would only have to pass through waivers if they are on the 40-man roster.

Johnson needs to be traded immediately. It's an absolute joke if he's not. Because of injuries he would not qualify to get the Nats draft picks if/when he leaves as a free agent.

People need to take a long term view of this and, like Yankees fans, some people aren't. The Nats organization is a disaster almost from top to bottom. The minors are barren because of MLB and Jim Bowden's idiocy. Johnson, Guzman, Dunn, Kearns, Belliard and everybody but the young SPs and Ryan Zimmerman needs to go for prospects.

Basically, Rizzo needs to blow up this organization and start over to fix what Bowden did. If he does that this team might be competitive by 2012...if they sign Strasburg, that is.

"People need to take a long term view of this"

Here's my long term view. I waited my entire youth -- from age 10 until age 44 -- to have my own major league team in Washington to root for. I've supported the team fully by purchasing full season tickets the minute they went on sale, and I've renewed every year without hesitation. All I ask for this is to have a reasonably competitive team to watch that isn't the joke and laughingstock of baseball. I've been waiting since 1971. I'm sick of waiting long term.

"everybody but the young SP and Zimmerman needs to go for prospects."

And are you going to buy season tickets to watch this team lose 130 games in the meantime?

Too bad Rizzo the genius is wed to asking for nothing but pitchers. He could have unloaded Johnson instead of getting nothing. background on Beimel trade, from FOX:

Orioles opt to not move another pitcher — 9:18 a.m.
The Orioles will not trade left-hander Mark Hendrickson to the Rockies, according to a major-league source.
The teams exchanged names, but could not find reach agreement. The Orioles then pulled back on Hendrickson after trading closer George Sherrill to the Dodgers on Thursday.

Posted by: Sec3mysofa | July 31, 2009 4:03 PM | Report abuse

"And are you going to buy season tickets to watch this team lose 130 games in the meantime?"

Guess what? The Nats are going to lose 110+ games this year, and probably 100+ games next year, and maybe still not break .500 the year after that. They will do that with or without Nick Johnson. And the FACT is that they are the laughing stock of MLB now and probably will be next year too. Heck, Pittsburgh's got more young prospects than Washington because their GM realized his predicament and has traded everybody he could (who wouldn't be around when they got competitive) to get minor leaguers to help the team in the future.

This is the problem with baseball in markets like DC and New York. Everybody wants to win "Now!" and winning "Now!" doesn't happen in baseball unless you want to destroy your organization to do it. Even the Yankees figured that out after Medium Stein took over which is why they're not trading Joba or Hughes and the couple minor leaguers they have left for Halladay.

The Nats need to re-build the entire organization. It's not going to happen overnight. To re-build the organization they need prospects, and they have very little now. Johnson, Kearns, Dunn, Guzman, Belliard, etc. are not going to be around when the Nats become competitive in 2-3 years. It's a lot better to get something for them than watch them walk for nothing.

The Nats are going to regret not trading Johnson. It's absolutely stupid.

The Nats need more arms in the organization. I don't know why some people are saying the Nats have enough pitchers, they don't. Not at all.

Next year's draft should be better for position players, and the Nats will probably have the #1 pick again. Heck, there's a kid catcher who's already projected as the #1 pick in the 2011 MLB draft, and the Nats will probably have the #1 pick in that draft too.

Hmmm, so who do we believe, Chico or MLB Network and Fox??

Wait, we're going to pay the rest of NJ's salary? That is an insult.

Updates don't re-stamp the time. Chico's update is after the FOX 3:53 report.
Welcome back, Nick. Didja miss us?

Really? People think trading NJ for a minor league prospect will make one iota of difference one way or the other? Get real. Stop flaming Rizzo for the long, hard job of cleaning up Bowden's mess. This is akin to whining about Obama not solving the fiscal mess it took W 8 years to create. With or without NJ, the team is going to stink this year (and probably next year too). Focus on the fact that the young arms are getting experience, the FO (hopefully) will be settled soon, and maybe, just maybe, a bonus baby pitcher will put some fannies in the seats come September.

I have a "fandom" question about the Johnson trade. Assuming it is true, do we give him a standing ovation on Tuesday night when he comes for his first at bat? I certainly intend to do so (assuming I attend the game), but I'm wondering if I will be in minority.
