What's the roster look like?

Posted by: periculum | August 31, 2009 7:29 PM | Report abuse

no paul bunions at SS for the nats tonight?

The gameday game at alliance bank stadium shows both Maxwell and Morse as available on the bench?

This sounds awfully familiar.

Score 2-0 WB, bottom of the 3rd. Leonard Davis (just in from AA Harrisburg) flies out. Surprisingly Ypez singles, then Molina singles, then Mike Daniel strikes out (the lead off guy). Then Norris Hopper, with 2 outs works a long at bat and awalk. (Now 1-1 with a walk). Seth Bynum follows with another long at bat and singles. 1 run scores but Molina is caught at the plate by Yankees prospect Austin Jackson in center field for WB.

This is essentially a "playoff" game as they play 2 games against each other and Syracuse is only 2.5 games behind in the standings.

Looking ahead: in a key "playoff" game Ian Desmond has already committed his 17th error while with Syracuse in this game. Marcos Yepez, a shortstop playing 3rd base, his 5th on the year.

Posted by: periculum | August 31, 2009 7:59 PM | Report abuse

Desmond gets a hit ... but his former team mates from Harrisburg continue to "flounder" at the plate.

Daniel hits a triple to drive in Yepez who had doubled. Hopper singles to drive him in.

Syracuse leads 3-2.

Hopper caught stealing ... 2 outs. Bynum doubles which would have brought him in.

peri: This isn't a "playoff" game for SYR, although it might have playoff weight & signifigance for the farm club; Don't over-hype it.

SYR clearly needs to beat SWB in this head-to-head series to have a shot at the post-season. Balester should be on the mound tonight, or did Foli go with Ramirez?

Desmond at SS is a tease; He makes the tremendous plays look easy, but botches the routine stuff too often to be considered at the SS position any further. His future may well be in CF (a la Robin Yount), but it probably won't happen with the Nationals' franchise. He's trade-bait in the off-season, imo. If Rizzo can bundle him with one of the bottom-end possible starters for 2010 (Balester, Chico, Detwiler, Estrada, Martin, Olsen) for a starting MI with minimal contract obligations, I'd take it.

He went with Hernadez. Wilkie is in now. Its tied at 3-3.

Yep, I agree. I wonder if they were able to get a left-handed starter from LA? I wonder if Atilano is pitching tomorrow night? Still wondering if they sent Morse to help Syracuse see if they can make up the 2.5 games?

Posted by: periculum | August 31, 2009 8:58 PM | Report abuse

Except for the strikeout tendency ala Maxwell and Dukes Mike Daniel looks like a pretty good left handed hitter in CF. Hopper is looking pretty good as well. Bynum has stepped up his game batting 3rd. Casto, is well Casto ... they need a guy like Morse.

Mike Daniel has a triple and a double in a game that is key to getting into the playoff for SYR. That must mean something to management?

Posted by: periculum | August 31, 2009 9:02 PM | Report abuse

Hopper works another walk. He, Daniel, and Bynum are having great games ... after that Molina the catcher.

peri: 1) It's Ramirez, not Hernandez; 2) Atilano is on the inactive list for SYR; he's a "no-go" for tomarrow, so it looks like Balester; 3) I don't see how Morse would have been demoted - he'd have to clear waivers, then been outrighted. That usually requires at least 72 hours.

Posted by: BinM | August 31, 2009 9:22 PM | Report abuse

with Hernandez, Gonzalez, Orr and Nieves all in the lineup, I'd bat Livan 6, Orr 7, Gonzo 8 and Nieves 9. Livan can hit better tahn all three.

Posted by: richardharless | August 31, 2009 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Yes, it was Ramirez. They lost 6-4. They are back to 3.5 behind. Wilkie lost it. 3 errors in the game including Ian Desmond.

Hmmm, Atilano has been pitching well ... kind of wondered if he was inactive as a precursor to getting called .. but it could be some personal business I suppose.
