Stephen Englund has been suspended for 50 games....

NEW YORK (AP) -- Washington Nationals minor league pitcher Stephen Englund has been suspended for 50 games under baseball's minor league drug program after testing positive for an amphetamine.

His suspension began Tuesday. There have been 50 suspensions this year under the minor league drug program and four under the major league program.

The Nationals drafted Englund in the second round in 2006. The 21-year-old righty made one start and two relief appearances this year in the Gulf Coast League and did not allow any runs in 2 2-3 innings.

Englund was a shortstop in high school, and the Nationals took him as an outfielder. He batted .162 last year for Class A Hagerstown with two homers and nine RBIs and .213 for Class A Vermont with two homers and 16 RBIs.

Just got back in time for my Belliard Bash. I see the bum is loafing again tonight, ridin the pine. : - }

Posted by: cokedispatch | August 11, 2009 6:14 PM | Report abuse

Ronnie Belliard is a lollygagger and a bum, and I wouldn't let him play catcher on my teeball team.

newposted, then beaten on the newpost by leetee...

leetee, sec231: What I'm trying to figure out is why a former SS/OF who is converting to a knuckleball-throwing relief pitcher is using amphetamines for? It's not like he needs to get amped up for a series of 90+mph fastballs.

Posted by: BinM | August 11, 2009 6:31 PM | Report abuse

"periculum: No need to DFA anyone from the SYR roster - the addition of Storen takes them to the full 24-man compliment for now."

BinM, Brian Oliver seems to think that SYR's roster is full; but that Harrisburg is short a man since they demoted Greg Veloz to Potomac. So, Harrisburg is now short a man. Storen basically replaces Clint Evert, an Expo 1st rounder they promoted to Syracuse.

Church leading off for the Braves? Really?

Hah! Another wasted high round draft pick by Jim Bow... ooops I meant to say Ronnie Belliard!

"Stephen Englund has been suspended for 50 games...."

the good news never stops, does it?

Posted by: surly_w | August 11, 2009 6:36 PM | Report abuse

Just a suggestion ... but given both **your** and Boz's (who had to steal a bit of your thunder ...) posts? Perhaps it may make sense to put some of the basic stats for each guy in the line up next to their name as well ... pitching stats with the pitcher of course.

Might as well let us brag a bit (except when it comes to Belliard) ... given the record we ought to have something to be proud of?

Posted by: periculum | August 11, 2009 6:37 PM | Report abuse

I guess Englund couldn't hit so he was sent back to GCL to learn to be a pitcher instead.

Posted by: periculum | August 11, 2009 6:39 PM | Report abuse

periculum: Harrisburg should also be at its' full 24-man compliment, if the recall of Nanita from rehab is accurate.

Potomac is currently short a man, unless one of their DL players (Willems, Engles, Beno, Lyons, King) is ready for activation.

Posted by: BinM | August 11, 2009 6:46 PM | Report abuse

Belliard invented the Tomahawk Chop. Just thought you might like to know that. Oh, and the chant, too.

Posted by: natsfan1a1 | August 11, 2009 6:53 PM | Report abuse

Nieves is the worst. Why don't we play Bard more? I know he has the groin thing, but is that actually the reason he's essentially splitting starts 50/50 with that bum Nieves?

Posted by: Imjustlikemusiq | August 11, 2009 6:55 PM | Report abuse

Ooooh Twinbrook....Nats in Atlanta (home of coke) and Belly invented New Coke...thats it...its a lock...the rip of the night.

Posted by: cokedispatch | August 11, 2009 6:59 PM | Report abuse

Nieves is catching b/c he is Lannan's guy. Lannan has him catch even when Flores was healthy.

Posted by: wrw0601 | August 11, 2009 7:13 PM | Report abuse

Belliard burned Atlanta ... Sherman drafted him in the 1st round.

Posted by: periculum | August 11, 2009 7:14 PM | Report abuse

Nothing stops Morgan ... crap he'd be a lock for the all-star game if the season had started from teh All-Star break.

Posted by: periculum | August 11, 2009 7:16 PM | Report abuse

Boy-o-boy Belliard is the absolute worst I have ever seen him tonight!

Posted by: periculum | August 11, 2009 7:20 PM | Report abuse

UH OH!

Posted by: periculum | August 11, 2009 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Whew! Escaped with only 1 run scored!

Posted by: PattyinSJ | August 11, 2009 7:50 PM | Report abuse

Only one run. Not bad. Could have been a lot worse.

Posted by: swang30 | August 11, 2009 7:50 PM | Report abuse

In other news, Zimm's hitting streak is now 11.

Posted by: swang30 | August 11, 2009 7:51 PM | Report abuse

When does Carpenter get back? This Holliday guy is putting me to sleep. And it sounds like he's already put Dibble to sleep.

Posted by: nunof1 | August 11, 2009 7:52 PM | Report abuse

Is Nyjer stealing too much? or are they just declaring open season because McCann is slow off the mark?

Posted by: swang30 | August 11, 2009 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Well, the umps screw us again. Eckstein pays the price with the ejection...

Posted by: BGinVA | August 11, 2009 7:59 PM | Report abuse

Well, in TPlush's defense, he did beat the throw.

Posted by: Sec3mysofa | August 11, 2009 7:59 PM | Report abuse

He was safe, I gather?

Posted by: swang30 | August 11, 2009 8:00 PM | Report abuse

And although we all like to bash MASN, they definitely had a good shot that proves the ump was off by a mile on the call.

Posted by: BGinVA | August 11, 2009 8:00 PM | Report abuse

Carpenter is due back on Thursday with the opening of the Reds series. I believe he has a kid getting ready to go back to college, so he's spending time with the family.

Posted by: BGinVA | August 11, 2009 8:02 PM | Report abuse

No, he was out. I know because the scoreboard says there's 2 outs and he's in the dugout. But he *did* beat the throw.

Posted by: Sec3mysofa | August 11, 2009 8:02 PM | Report abuse

Did Belly influence blue on that call?

Posted by: cokedispatch | August 11, 2009 8:05 PM | Report abuse

I wanna know what Eck said. He's clearly vocal in the dugout. Remember the "no integrity" line late in a game after Dunn struck out early this year?

Posted by: cdstej | August 11, 2009 8:06 PM | Report abuse

Shoot.

Posted by: BGinVA | August 11, 2009 8:09 PM | Report abuse

With this missed call, along with the fiasco in CitiField, we should just re-name Larry Vanover as Larry Done-over (or something worse, but more descriptive).

Posted by: BinM | August 11, 2009 8:09 PM | Report abuse

Johnny Holliday is a really old vet of Washington Sports Radio. I think he may even go back to the old Senators. He has always been terrible. The only one worst would be Ronnie Belliard.

Posted by: periculum | August 11, 2009 8:10 PM | Report abuse

Shoot again.

Posted by: BGinVA | August 11, 2009 8:10 PM | Report abuse

Lannan is not having a good night ... way too many walks ... control issues.

Posted by: periculum | August 11, 2009 8:11 PM | Report abuse

Back to reality...errors, walks and bad calls by the umps all costing us. But a nice catch and DP by Dunn there! I have no complaints about Dunn's defense at first base so far.

Posted by: BGinVA | August 11, 2009 8:13 PM | Report abuse

One point (often made, but still), about the Plan, and Kasten's experience there: Look around the ballpark. They're winning, more or less, and they aren't drawing all that well. If the Nats were 58-54, I think they'd be drawing just fine. Perhaps we'll find out next year.

Posted by: Sec3mysofa | August 11, 2009 8:13 PM | Report abuse

@Sec3 -- winning 8 straight after the start they had... it's too much to expect the crowds to show up now. this team has been left for dead this year by too many casual fans..

Posted by: cdstej | August 11, 2009 8:15 PM | Report abuse

If the Nats continue to play like they are playing I think its a pretty good bet that interest will swing away from the constant soap opera that is the Danny to this team.

Posted by: periculum | August 11, 2009 8:16 PM | Report abuse

Yep, back to reality. With five strikeouts so far, it looks like our potent-as-of-late offense didn't make the road trip.

Posted by: BGinVA | August 11, 2009 8:17 PM | Report abuse

Why was the 3rd run against Lannan earned? If WIllingham hadn't booted the ball, Prado doesn't score, and then the DP ends the inning, no?

Posted by: cdstej | August 11, 2009 8:17 PM | Report abuse

perhaps I should clarify--I meant look around the Braves' park. Winning doesn't fix everything, everywhere. It would here, but clearly not in Atlanta.

Posted by: Sec3mysofa | August 11, 2009 8:21 PM | Report abuse

But 4 hits at the top of the line up plus 3 stolen bases ... should be 4 stolen bases ...

Posted by: periculum | August 11, 2009 8:21 PM | Report abuse

good point, cdstej--the error on Willingham should make that run unearned. Where does it say different?

Posted by: Sec3mysofa | August 11, 2009 8:23 PM | Report abuse

I think they were waiting for the official scorer. Its fixed now ... 4 runs, 3 earned?

Posted by: periculum | August 11, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

re: SS -- Dibble and Holliday pointed out, Boras has five clients in the first round, none of them signed yet, because they're all waiting to see where Strasburg sets the bar. That means Boras can't run it up to the very last minute. That doesn't mean he has to sign, but it gives a shorter timeline.

Posted by: Sec3mysofa | August 11, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

i think our win streak ends tonight... with lannan on the mound..

Posted by: rachel216 | August 11, 2009 8:44 PM | Report abuse

does debbi taylor realize that when she nods so affirmatively at what rizzo was saying it makes her look like a toady?

Posted by: surly_w | August 11, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

Debbi IS a toady.

Posted by: leetee1955 | August 11, 2009 8:47 PM | Report abuse

five guys would be enough to make a pretty fair team in Japan.

Posted by: periculum | August 11, 2009 8:47 PM | Report abuse

Keep hope alive. Hanson's thrown a lot of pitches and it's HOT there. Maybe the bats come alive...

Still think back to that blown call - we should have been up 2-1 and had the momentum.

One more thought - aside from the gem in NY, why does Lannan struggle so much on the road? Nats Park favors pitchers slightly, but not enough to explain such a discrepancy.

Posted by: cdstej | August 11, 2009 8:48 PM | Report abuse

Kensing? Looks like Riggleman is giving up?

Posted by: periculum | August 11, 2009 8:50 PM | Report abuse

Kensing in for Lannan - Nnnnnnn-oooooooooo!

Posted by: BinM | August 11, 2009 8:51 PM | Report abuse

OK - one more question. How come Guzman is still considered to have a hitting streak, even though he walked as a pinch hitter last week against FLA in a game he did not start??

Posted by: cdstej | August 11, 2009 8:51 PM | Report abuse

I thought that was a Debbi Taylor bobblehead interviewing Rizzo. What game are they giving those away?

Posted by: nunof1 | August 11, 2009 8:52 PM | Report abuse

oh well, streak had to end one day. had a feeling it was gonna be tonight.

Posted by: rachel216 | August 11, 2009 8:54 PM | Report abuse

cdstej,

It seems like many of the starters are pretty close WHIP wise. The only almost-dominant pitcher was Jordan Zimmermmann as shown by the number of strikeouts over innings pitched versus base-on-balls given up.

Perhaps Martis or Detwiler will come close at some point, its hard to say ...

Posted by: periculum | August 11, 2009 9:08 PM | Report abuse

ya'll weren't sincere enough in your Belly bashing.

Belliard you are a sorry sack of crap. You need to stand up because that fine piece of pine you're riding doesn't deserve the likes of your a**.

Your reflexes are so slow, MASN uses x-mo to speed you up.

Posted by: NatsNut | August 11, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

How many called strikes have our guys looked at tonight? Hanson is not a strikeout pitcher, but he has 9 tonight, and Dunn is one shy of the Golden Sombrero. It's really frustrating. I've been listening to the radio (with the ump constantly barking in the background when we're up) and just turned the TV on. Are our guys just taking strikes or is Blue calling strikes that really aren't strikes?

Posted by: BGinVA | August 11, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

NN: Nice try, but I don't think Belly-bashing is going to save this one.

G'night Gracie.

Posted by: BinM | August 11, 2009 9:19 PM | Report abuse

Well at least Kensing is gone now.

Posted by: periculum | August 11, 2009 9:28 PM | Report abuse

BG, Hanson has pitched well, but if I got those calls I'd be pitching pretty well, too.

Posted by: Sec3mysofa | August 11, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

cd, because walks are not at-bats.

BGinVa: I beg to differ on your assesment of Tommy Hanson he has strikeout "stuff" his fasball, curve, and slider are as good as i've seen on any rookie in a while maybe because i'm here in the A-T-L i get an up close view but believe me he is good. Tough night here at Turner but time to start a new streak tommorow.

Wow, it looks like the fan who interfered with the popup is getting a citation or something--they're taking names down there. I hope they're gonna fine him, interfering with the home team.
Wow, they ARE 86ing him. Good.

It's like a whole different team tonight. Yesterday's day off killed the momentum!

Posted by: BGinVA | August 11, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Time for Belliard to pinch hit.

Posted by: periculum | August 11, 2009 9:48 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Sec3mysofa | August 11, 2009 9:49 PM | Report abuse

it's belly buster night at the P-Nats tomorrow. That's what's wrong.
We have to find someone else besides Belli if this holds up.

Posted by: Sec3mysofa | August 11, 2009 9:53 PM | Report abuse

I have no doubt that Hanson was on his game tonight, and we certainly aren't. As well as we've been hitting lately, we've done nothing tonight and it seems like we're taking a ton of strikes. The bats are quiet tonight...

Posted by: BGinVA | August 11, 2009 9:54 PM | Report abuse

Man, I've seen better strike zones in Ponce.

Posted by: Sec3mysofa | August 11, 2009 9:57 PM | Report abuse

This is all my fault. I haven't watched in about five days until tonight. I'm heading to the showers then coming out early tomorrow to get a little mojo practice in.

OK, Cmon. One quick touchdown and we're right back in this thing...

Posted by: Sec3mysofa | August 11, 2009 10:00 PM | Report abuse

It would be easier to watch real prospects as opposed to Logan Kensing and Saul Rivera.

Posted by: periculum | August 11, 2009 10:01 PM | Report abuse

Well, I guess the Belly bash didn't pan out tonight. Perhaps its a home game hex kind of thing. I suppose we can give it one more chance tomorrow night before canning it til the next home game. If it works tomorrow, 9 out 10 wouldn't be a bad thang. GO NATS, heat up again in hotlanta on 8/12. Take the rest of the night off boys.

I knew that you were referring to Braves attendance, sec3, and that did occur to me as well when I saw Belli in the on-deck circle.

Awesome entry, NatsNut. I think I liked the bench part best of all. :-)

We'll get 'em tomorrow with new grampa dargregmag in the stands.
