Nats 2, Mets 1; Detwiler Gets First MLB Win
This was Ross Detwiler's final chance. He took the mound Monday against the Mets with an 0-6 record, winless in 12 starts. Frankly, he was sick of the losing and no-decisions. Among the 165 starters big leaguers who'd made at least 12 starts this season, entering Monday, only one -- Detwiler -- remained winless.
He's winless no longer. Detwiler busted the streak in Monday's 2-1 victory against the Mets, pitching six innings, allowing just one run, and capping the last start of his rookie season with the one accomplishment he's long anticipated.
Ahh, this is how it feels.
The post-game interview.
The shaving cream pie in the face.
The burning sensation.
"It has to feel good to get that first one, and he earned it," Jim Riggleman said.
"You could kind of see it in his eyes that he really wanted it," Mike Morse said.
"It feels great," Detwiler admitted. "It kind of takes some pressure off of myself. It's one for the record books."
September hasn't given the Nats much to remember, but Detwiler's three starts (16-2/3 IP, 5 BB, 9 K, 2.70 ERA) might top the list. Again on Monday night, the 23-year-old showed little resemblance to the inconsistent starter of June and July. He retired eight of the first nine. The Mets managed three hits, all doubles, through the first four innings, but each came with two outs. Even after the Mets tied the game in the sixth, Detwiler got two consecutive outs, stranding runners on second and third.
Oh, and then everything lined up just right to give the rookie the victory.
Mike Morse knocked a go-ahead homer to right-center in the bottom of the sixth. (Morse, by the way, has now homered in three consecutive games.)
Jason Bergmann pitched two scoreless, holding the 2-1 lead.
And then Mike MacDougal, rebounding from the previous day's mess, retired the side in the ninth on 11 pitches -- three ground balls.
"We'd been a little sloppy the last few days, and we went out and played a clean game," Ryan Zimmerman said.
