Pudge presser pushed back to 2:30 p.m.

[UPDATE, 2:15] -- OK, another delay here; Pudge is en route to 1500 S. Capitol. A Nats official has informed the media gathering that Pudge's presser won't begin until 2:30. Evidently his physical exam took a little more time than expected. But he has indeed passed his physical. So the signing is official.

---

The Nats' press conference to announce the signing of free agent Ivan Rodriguez was pushed back to 2 p.m. Once things get underway at Nats Park, I'll follow along on the blog with a quasi-live post of comments and reactions. Stay tuned.

There's no mention of a webcast of the presser on nationals.com; does anyone know if it'll be available?

(Yes, I know. I need a life.)

To answer my own question: yes it is.

(And, yes, I know. I STILL need a life.)

Hmmm...Torrealba wants I-Rod money to sign with the Rockies

Could the Nats have set the market for catchers? That's part of the game, too.

(And, yeah, I need a life, too)

Were you there when the presser was scheduled? Yes, yes I was. Where were you, Nats? ;-)

The test pattern colors are nice, though.

You've got a test pattern? Over on Nationals.com they say "the program has ended" before it began.

I never thought I'd say -- er, write -- this, but thank goodness for MASN.

Okay, FA starting pitchers, we got your catcher right here and the lines are now open... ;-)

Pudge presser pushed back to 2:30 p.m.

Pudge said to himself: "Goodgod, the Nationals! What am I thinking!!!" and is now on a plane to the Caribbean.

As one who needs to get a life instead of paying attention to such things, as well, I note that the Nats did not trade their AAA Rule 5 pick, Arismendy Mota, to the Cubs, but simply gave him to the Cubs for "cash considerations". I suppose it makes sense if the opportunity was available, but I would rather they had traded the kid for a position player in the minors.

1/2 St., maybe they traded him to the Cubs for a guy named Cash Considerations?

Posted by: JohninMpls | December 11, 2009 3:31 PM | Report abuse

Seriously? How irrelevant are the Nats? Wake me when they sign someone who won't be on IR for half his contract.

--They had to recoup some of the massive cash they spent on the free agent deal of the year. Don't forget to count your pennies boys and girls!

Has the presser happened? Is there a report anywhere?

Ivan Rodriguez says he's ready to play every day, if necessary.

Rodriguez met the Washington media this afternoon and reiterated his desire to reach 3,000 hits before he retires, and to pass along his experience to both catcher Jesus Flores and the club's young pitching staff.

"Communication is going to be very important for me with the pitchers," he said. "Spring training is for that. We're gonnna sit down in spring training and talk and go from there."

Nats' GM Mike Rizzo called the Rodriguez signing part of the "building process," and said that Pudge was targeted by the Nationals once the '09 season ended. The Nats' evaluators - including former receiver Bob Boone, the assistant GM - focused on Rodriguez, based on his resume.

"His physical was pristine," said Rizzo, "and we think he's got a lot left in the tank. He still has good bat speed, and one of the best arms behind the plate in the big leagues."

There were no revelations at today's presser, just about what you'd expect under the circumstances. Rodriguez got the 2-year contract he desired, the Nats get a future Hall of Famer, and now it's back to the drawing board for Rizzo and company. The Nats are still in pursuit of starting pitching, and insist they won't be timid about spending money to get the guys they want.

The next six weeks shape up as critical insofar as the remaining free agent market goes. The Randy Wolf contract with Milwaukee set the level for second tier top-of-the-rotation arms. John Lackey will get more than that, but the others still out there will likely get similiar offers to Wolf. The Nats believe that at least one, but hopefully two, of the available pitchers remaining fall to them. Perhaps the I-Rod signing will help.
