Updates: Nationals at Cardinals

I'll provide periodic updates. ...

4:10: The Nationals beat the Cardinals, 9-6, in a game in which they pounded 15 hits. Ian Desmond made two errors but smacked three hits. John Lannan threw 59 pitches in five innings, pitching with such efficiency that he threw 15 pitches in the bullpen afterward. He joins Garrett Mock as Nats who are done with spring training games.

2:25: The Nats are having their way with Adam Wainwright. Cristian Guzman poked an RBI triple to right-center, and Ian Desmond drove an RBI double to left. The Nationals have 10 hits and lead 5-2 after scoring three runs in the top of the fifth. Mike Morse has a couple hits today, too.

2:05: The Nationals tied it at two after a two-run third in which Cristian Guzman grounded a double to right and Willie Harris drove in a run with a ground out. They've got five hits off Adam Wainwright. Ian Desmond and Guzman turned a smooth 6-4-3 double play in the third. Good footwork by Guzman.

1:44: The Nationals made a mess of the first inning. John Lannan allowed two unearned runs on one hit and two Nationals errors. One of them was scary. Willie Harris slipped while chasing a fly ball and landed in a heap. He stayed down a while, but remained in the game. They got out of the inning when Cristian Guzman, making his first start at second base, started a 4-6-3 double play.

The Nationals have four hits off Adam Wainright with no outs in the third. Nyjer Morgan reached on an infield single, and there are runners on first and second after he swiped second.

The other error in the first was an errant throw from Desmond - his 6th error of Spring training.

Season starts Monday. I'll be there.

Go Nats.

Guzman playing 2B may be the best thing that could happen to him.

True! Lowcountry; Guzz may have stumbled into a career extender at second base look Guzman if healthy can swing the bat he can hit 280 or better so why not and i've been meaning to mention this tidbit why hasn't Rizzo taken a look at Jermaine Dye as a remedy in RF the guy can still hit and field and i'm sure he'd love to play instead of sitting around getting fat,so why not? or is is asking price too high?

dargregmag, I beat the Dye drum for a while, too. It may be they don't want to spend the money, but Dye also tailed off badly in the second half of '09 and apparently he's a terrible fielder now.

I expect they did take a quick look at Dye, and then looked away before getting caught, which is good. He's at the stage in his career where he's getting paid for what he used to do, which won't help this team.

Box Score says 9-6 Nats. Capps gave up 2 earned runs in 2/3 of an inning. Not feeling much confidence in Capps at this point.

These posts ended before the end of the game. The final score was Nationals 9 and te cards 6. It would have been nice to read what happened since we can't see these spring training games like the other teams in the EAST NL and AL. I've seen just one and a third of a game on DirecTV playing the mets. It's just hard learning about this team. Baltimore has MASN TV and radio. We have just text maybe. But if someone is going to report on these games, finish at the end of the game!

Where were Ryan Zimmerman and Adam Dunn today?? Someone in the dugout said they didn't even make the trip to Jupiter?!

I am starting to get a sneaking feeling that we might see another bullpen implusion to start the year. Capps giving up runs left and right and the set up guys with ERAs in the 4's. God lord, please save us from another start to the season like last year with so many demoralizing late inning losses.

Still, its spring so I am trying to be hopeful.
