Game 20 discussion thread: Nationals at Cubs
Before the Washington Nationals took on the Chicago Cubs on Monday night, General Manager Mike Rizzo provided an update on a number of rehabilitating players.
-- Pitcher Jordan Zimmermann, who underwent elbow ligament replacement surgery last August, is so far ahead of schedule the Nationals want to reign him in. He has already thrown a live batting practice session and is still planned to return to Washington by late August.
-- Catcher Jesus Flores, who is recovering from right shoulder surgery underwent last fall, is swinging the bat and beginning his throwing program.
-- Pitcher Chien-Ming Wang, who was placed on the 60-day disabled list in April with a strained shoulder, told Rizzo he "he felt the best he's felt since the surgery." Wang had surgery last June.
-- Pitcher Ross Detwiler, who was placed on the 60-day disabled list in April with a torn hip flexor, is back to fully working out and is throwing again.
Feel free to use the comment section below as a discussion thread. I'll provide any worthwhile updates from Wrigley Field.

Um, it's 8:15 and MASN isn't broadcasting the game... they have a picture of Wrigley with a play by play but no game. Is MASN just completely oblivious or was this planned?

Carpenter says they're working on their video feed.

Of course, the commercials work just fine.

Shoot. What's up with NM lately?
Posted by: usmc53 | April 26, 2010 8:28 PM | Report abuse
Carpenter and Dibble are great. I don't know why some people complain about these guys. They're doing a really nice job while the video is out.
On another note, ROUGH second inning for Lannan. Just walked the pitcher to bring in a run. Brutal.

MASN was working fine when they showed the opening lineups, now I might as well have hung a poster of Wrigley on the wall, and be listening to the game through a HAM radio, the audio quality's so bad...
and we're losing 2-0.
awesome.
Happy Monday, all!

MASN remains a true minor league operation.

I'm giving them the next half-inning and then I'm outta here.
Posted by: gilbertbp | April 26, 2010 8:47 PM | Report abuse
and the Nationals wonder why they are having trouble building a fanbase in DC, this is really ridiculous. I hope the Post asks the folks at MASN and Stan some tough questions on this. Pretty embarrassing and should be unacceptable... never happen with SNY or YES... been 30 minutes already, should be fixed.

What's wrong with it? It is working on mlb.tv.

Wow, how are we 10-9 with Dunn and Lannan being completely mediocre and Zimmerman on the bench for half the season? Lannan needs to figure it out.
Come on Johnny!!

We have given up on MASN and are listening to Charlie and Dave on my iPhone. On my iPhone, because the lame-o AM signal of the Nats' flagship station does not reach to the Vienna end of the Orange Line of the Metro.
What an embarrassingly cheap organization.

Amazing that we're still in this game.
Of course, with our bats lately, 3 runs may be all the Cubs need.

Three innings and no picture. Good night.

MASN needs to know we're annoyed. Here's their "Contact MASN" link: http://masnsports.com/masn_news_information/contact-masn.html
I told them they've lost me for the rest of the game.

Amorris, you're getting the MASN feed? I thought their satellite was cooked (especially since it sounds like I'm listening to an AM feed in Siberia), but now not so sure if it's coming through for you.
Regardless, I agree this should have been fixed at least 15 minutes ago by now, let alone not happen at all.

Thank god, it's back on, just in time to watch a nice comeback possibility, thanks to Mr. Silva.
Looks kinda orange-ish on my set, sorta as if their filming through the same filters as used in O Brother Where Art Thou, but at least it isn't a generic solid shot of the outside of Wrigley. Game on!

Or maybe "rain him in" -- tell him the game's rained out and he's not pitching.

Thank goodness for dir.tv i had the cub's feed so i didn't miss an inning, tough loss we had our chances but with the wind blowing in....................is it me or do our outfielders seem to wait for the ball when line drives are hit into the corners to come out instead of cutting them off,i saw Colvin of the Cub's attack a ball hit into the corner instead of letting the ball play him and he played it perfectly, need to take two of three from these chumps.

Rough loss.
This organization had no patience for Mock not throwing strikes. We'll see if they let Bruney stick around. There must be someone in Syracuse or Harrisburg who can put the ball over the plate better than he did tonight.
Posted by: usmc53 | April 26, 2010 11:09 PM | Report abuse
Wasn't Bruney making some noise in the offseason about wanting to close. If he were our closer our record after 20 games would be more like last year's. With all the walks the game was basically given to the Cubs. I can see why they left Bruney in, though. The pen was worn out. I wouldn't mind seeing Storen, Clippard, and Capps as our 7-8-9 guys.
Posted by: p-man | April 26, 2010 11:19 PM | Report abuse
Storen-Clippard-Capps sounds great to me.
Posted by: usmc53 | April 26, 2010 11:21 PM | Report abuse
If I'm Rizzo, I give "Ball Four" Bruney one more appearance. If he as much as walks one guy, he's off to SYR.
Drew Storen and Jesus cannot get here soon enough.

Arneson is actually doing better than Storen.
Posted by: periculum | April 26, 2010 11:45 PM | Report abuse
That loss stings. Could unravel this entire road trip. We'll see how they react tomorrow.
I think the fault is less with Bruney and more with Guzman. Riggleman should have substituted Kennedy in there, and put Gonzo at 3B. Guzman screwed up two outs, at least ONE of which I'm confident that Kennedy would have made.

Alumni News: Admittedly this came in a mopup role in a 17-3 loss, but Joel Gascanrahan struck out the side on 13 pitches for the Pirates tonight.
Full disclosure: I am NOT advocating that we re-acquire this bum.
Getting Tony Plush for this bum and FIGJAM Milledge is still Rizzo's finest move.

I don't think Bruney has options, and he'd be claimed if waived. A little soon to give up on him, but honestly, it'd be a while before I put him in late/close again.

More bad Alumni News:
Austin ".195" Kearns hit his first homer tonight. I guess he's still a few games off Barry Bonds' pace.
Manny's team lost, however. That is not news.

I don't know if Bruney is still sulking about not being the closer but is performance since arriving is dissappointing. Sad when the whole team is trying to come together and you have a guy who gives a game away.

This AM on XM Dibble was ranting about the strike zone last night - any truth to that? Or just the usual wind-him-up-and-let-him-go from that meathead? I listened to the Cubs broadcast on XM last night and they didn't mention it.
Posted by: utec | April 27, 2010 8:36 AM | Report abuse
I'm not so down on Bruney. Don't want to see him closing but he does have a live arm. He could be useful in "nonpressure" situations, but I guess the "problem" is that if we continue to get quality starts and until our hitting comes round (meaning Zim and Dunn at the same time) we'll neither blow out clubs nor get blown out very often. Love the fact that the imminent arrival of SS and the strong starting pitching at Syracuse and H'burg is putting pressure on all our starting pitchers (including Lannan); likewise, our bullpen guys should be looking over the shoulders at Storen and Arneson.

Actually, there was one good thing about MASN losing the feed last night. It made Rob and Bob pay attention to the game rather than babble on about whatever their latest irrelevance might be. Also, sure was nice to not have to listen to someone's high school coach from Peoria or one of Debbi's sophomoric interviews. When Bob sticks to play-by-play and Dibble actually comments on what's happening in the game they're nowhere near as bad.
Posted by: truke | April 27, 2010 8:47 AM | Report abuse
Only caught some of the game last night. I don't tend to watch the starts of 8 p.m. or later because they end too late for me. However, I did get lured in a bit in the course of channel-surfing. Only "saw" after the 5th or so because of the MASN feed issue. Actually caught a few highlights from the game on MLB Network before the MASN video feed came back. Also saw bits of the BOS-TOR game, which was picked up because of the rainout at the Mets.

FIGJAM - "Fxxx I'm Good, Just Ask Me"
Re: Bob and Rob without the picture, they were unwatchable, so to speak. I'd hear the ball hit the catcher's mitt while one of them continued his current thoughts, and then shortly I'd hear another ball hit a mitt and a comment "that's ball two". I didn't get enough of a sense that they had shifted into radio mode, and I had to turn it off. (Another example -- Bob would say something like "and it's a ground ball to Wasniewski" as if we all knew what position Wasniewski played).
As for the result -- all of our pitchers are constantly re-applying for their jobs. We've got guys in the minors ready to move up soon, so anyone who demonstrates they don't have ML stuff won't be around long.
Posted by: hats4bats | April 27, 2010 9:20 AM | Report abuse
Agreed that you could tell that they were tv, not radio, broadcasters when the video was not active. I'm not saying that those who don't like Bob and Rob are wrong (because that's purely subjective, of course). I'm just saying that I do like them. I do wish that people could simply state their opinions without feeling the need to call them names, but it's DC, and the Internet. Dream on, right? :-)
