Game 23 discussion thread: Nationals at Marlins

livo 97.jpg

That picture hangs on the wall in the tunnel from the players' entrance to the visitors' clubhouse at Sun Life Stadium. Livan Hernandez is not pitching this series, but the location makes him somehow a part of it.

Another former Marlin, Scott Olsen, takes the ball tonight for the Nats against Ricky Nolasco, who's been tremendous for two straight starts. Before we get going, a couple quick notes:

-Mike Morse, coming back from a calf strain, is with Class AAA Syracuse. Considering how well Justin Maxwell has fit in, Morse could be there for more than just a rehab assignment.

-Willie Harris hasn't played since Monday because of a sore right knee, but Manager Jim Riggleman said, "It feels much better. I think he he's ready to go."

-Earlier today, MLBPA leader Michael Weiner made clear his organization's oppostion to the new, controversial immigration law in Arizona. Nats reliever Miguel Batista, one of the team's most thoughtful players and a native of the Dominican Republic, agreed. "We should be opposed," he said. "We should be looking into it, because we have a lot of our players walking down the street in Arizona. They are exposed. The law is against the Constitution."

As for baseball, talk about tonight's game right here.

Welome back Zimm!

Oops - Welcome

Posted by: CAskinhead | April 30, 2010 7:19 PM | Report abuse

Zimm-Dunn-Hammer-Pudge!

The middle of our lineup is SCARY!

Posted by: usmc53 | April 30, 2010 7:24 PM | Report abuse

Tonight's lineup is the best we have, though I'm not super-thrilled with Desmond hitting eighth. Still, it's a potent lineup and we should have good results (as already evidenced in the first inning). Go Nats!

Posted by: thepostischeap | April 30, 2010 7:26 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, I'm thinking Desmond in the 2-hole and Kennedy in the 8-hole makes more sense. But I'm not the guy who has the Nats at 12-10 right now, so I should probably zip it.

Posted by: usmc53 | April 30, 2010 7:29 PM | Report abuse

Repost:
OK - Scuffed up Nolasco a little in the 1st, and Olsen got through clean, but is having problems controlling the strike zone. The bottom half of the order for the Nationals has to see as many pitches as possible to continue softening Nolasco.

Posted by: BinM | April 30, 2010 7:50 PM | Report abuse

In addition to the arguments put forth in previous threads as to why Kennedy hitting 2nd makes sense, let's not forget: Ian is a rookie. Riggs is trying to ease him into the everyday SS job, and he's also trying to ease his adjustment to MLB pitching. Ian is hitting .246. Someday, soon, we hope he'll be our #2 hitter. A little patience please.

Posted by: CapPeterson1 | April 30, 2010 7:57 PM | Report abuse

JMax is 'fitting in'? JMax is hitting? Only in Riggleman's mind. They still need Morse who can actually hit.

Posted by: periculum | April 30, 2010 8:00 PM | Report abuse

Should be ahead at least 3-0 bad baserunning and Nyjer not comming through still not bad if Olsen stop's pitching like he's scared.

Posted by: dargregmag | April 30, 2010 8:03 PM | Report abuse

4 walks for Olsen?

@BinM,

Back to the Ron Vilone question: he has already pitched in 2 games. English has yet to pitch in one. Didn't English beat this guy out to make on the opening day roster? And he pitched a lot better than a number of guys still on that roster.

'splain that one Lucy.

I am willing to be that Riggleman asks for Vilone in a week to 10 days. Then its back to ischemic attacks whenever he pitches.

Posted by: periculum | April 30, 2010 8:04 PM | Report abuse

2 run HR Zim!!!

Posted by: periculum | April 30, 2010 8:05 PM | Report abuse

Whoo-Hoo! Welcome back RZim, indeed!

Posted by: BinM | April 30, 2010 8:05 PM | Report abuse

I think Zim is feeling better :)

Posted by: thepostischeap | April 30, 2010 8:07 PM | Report abuse

glad to have Zimm back and Olsen looks great. A big thank you to the Nats for taking my mind off the Caps.

Posted by: chris88 | April 30, 2010 8:16 PM | Report abuse

Peric:

Villone is already with SYR; English was demoted on the 27th, and normally has 72 hours to report to his new assignment. That means English is due to report with SYR today.

Try not to get so amped up over your personal conspiracy theory; Bergmann was outrighted to SYR on the 22nd, and still hasn't appeared in a game.

Posted by: BinM | April 30, 2010 8:19 PM | Report abuse

What's up with Nolasco? Getting hit all over the place, but 7 strikeouts? only 1 flyball and 1 groundball for outs. All other balls in play has been home runs or hits...

Posted by: swang30 | April 30, 2010 8:31 PM | Report abuse

Uggla goes clueless on a groundball & doesn't cover his bag - result 5-0 Nationals.

And who thought that signing Kennedy & not trying to acquire Uggla was a bad decision?

Posted by: BinM | April 30, 2010 8:32 PM | Report abuse

Is this Zim's way of telling us that he missed us, too? Wow!

Posted by: dryw1 | April 30, 2010 8:34 PM | Report abuse

Kennedy vs. Orlando Hudson: Less style and more substance. I couldn't be happier with that signing.

Nolasco out after 4 - Zimmerman is 3-3, with 10TB. A nice start against the Fish, and an outstanding return to the lineup from RZim.

Just got home...

5-0??? Beeeeyootiful!

And just caught the highlights of Zim's out-of-the-parkers, and then that laser double, wow, he hasn't missed a step!!

It's also great to not be having that bullpen trepidation of years' past, where against these fish, no lead was safe.

Happy Friday all, GO NATS!!!

People need to understand the damn law before they comment. The federal law that has just about the same damn language in it is ALREADY ON THE BOOKS!!!!

People are tired of this crap

Go Nats.

Posted by: JDB1 | April 30, 2010 8:55 PM | Report abuse

I'm late to the party tonight as I'm just tuning in the game, but in my estimation (which ain't worth that much) this series is big. The Marlins have owned the Nats in years past, so if the Nats can even go 9-9 this year vs. the Marlins, it will be a significant step towards a competitive record. So imagine how happy I was to see a 5-0 lead and Olsen pitching well. Go Nats.

Posted by: jfromPG | April 30, 2010 9:01 PM | Report abuse

JDB,

Curious as to what comment you are referring to. Did I miss something, Federal or otherwise?

Posted by: HotNats | April 30, 2010 9:06 PM | Report abuse

Going back and forth between us and Met-Phils real quiet up there in Philly right now you can hear the perverbial mouse pi$$in on cotton wouldn't it be something if this division turned into real race with us right in the middle of it,this team is playing together and it can only get better Go Nats!!!.

Dar,

Never heard that proverbial before, definitely being added to my list, thanksmuch!!!

Posted by: HotNats | April 30, 2010 9:10 PM | Report abuse

in the blog write up, its mentioned that the MLPA and Jose Bautista are chiming in to the goings on in Arizona. I like to seperate baseball with politics, but I just had a swat team swarm the house 2 doors down (3 hours ago) and it comes to find out that everyone in the neighborhoods assumption was correct. Drugs, guns, 16 illegals rounded up. I'm sure they'll get a slap on the wrist. I'm all for legal processes, but I'm tired of it. I don't sympathize. Sorry for my rant, back to baseball.

Posted by: JDB1 | April 30, 2010 9:25 PM | Report abuse

5 runs, 10 hits & 14 K for the Nationals through seven innings. A strange game so far.

Posted by: BinM | April 30, 2010 9:27 PM | Report abuse

With the future holding SS and Storen and maybe Zimm, Wang or Detwiler I swear I'm getting just a little excited.

Do the right thing and sign Dunn to an extension, would send a great message to the team.

Posted by: SCNatsFan | April 30, 2010 9:28 PM | Report abuse

Don't you think, as much as Zimm rises to special occasions, that if he ever gets in the post season he's going to have an mvp performance.

Posted by: markfromark | April 30, 2010 9:28 PM | Report abuse

Bruney is so frustrating to watch. Tyler Clippard's arm is going to be jello.

Posted by: Jeff_Jackson | April 30, 2010 9:33 PM | Report abuse

Ah, okay, thanks for the clarification. I committed blog sacrilege by not reading the full post, before jumping right into the comments section, not expecting much other than "normal" baseball discussion...

we now return to the game, already in progress...

Get'em out, O Bearded One!

Go Nats!!!

What are the chances that there is a federal law on the books known to you and unknown to the Department of Justice?

I'd say %100. They just won't enforce it. Arizona decided it was time to do just that.

Posted by: lowcountry | April 30, 2010 9:52 PM | Report abuse

And the umpire robbed Pudge (& the Nationals).

Posted by: BinM | April 30, 2010 9:58 PM | Report abuse

Clip owes Nyjer a steak dinner. Terrible call at home plate on Pudge.

Where is Amy Shipley tonight? I'm not used to the Nats beat writer actually traveling to games in Miami...

I am concerned about overusing Clippard early in the season. I would like to see him get the next two games off.

Adam, how bout a question to this effect...

Can anyone help--just got back from the Kennedy Ctr, tried to turn on the game (Comcast DC), and cannot get it. Same thing happened the other night. Anyone else have this problem? Needless to say thrilled to see how the game went!

Nice April!

Regarding previously mentioned Comcast DC problem--my boyfriend just spent ten minutes on the phone w/Comcast and found out that MASN 2 is now channel 5 in DC. I hope Comcast will update their Web site, which still says 79.

Zimmerman's key to avoiding another hamstring injury? Hit homeruns...jog around the bases.

Posted by: TimDz | April 30, 2010 11:09 PM | Report abuse

Sniff sniff. What's that smell? Smells like, victory? Either that, or fried fish....

The 'pen was kinda scary, but nice win. Olsen gave us another quality start, Zimm got right back in the swing of things, and Nyjer had that great catch to save Clippard's bacon.

Posted by: natsfan1a1 | April 30, 2010 11:19 PM | Report abuse

Question: If you're gonna pull a double steal, shouldn't you have pinch run for Pudge at 3rd with Maxwell? Like the call, just not the lead runner. Seems like a lot to ask of Pudge.

Posted by: dovelevine | April 30, 2010 11:24 PM | Report abuse

It was too much to ask of the umpire to get a good angle on the play. Pudge was clearly safe and not taxed by the effort.

Posted by: burnedonce | May 1, 2010 12:07 AM | Report abuse

Here's a fun stat:

The Nationals are now 20-10 with a .667 win % over the last 30 games dating back to last season.

Posted by: jmorrisa | May 1, 2010 1:34 AM | Report abuse

I guess Adam's reporting made it fair game, but I implore my fellow Nats fans, as hard as it is sometimes, to keep politics out of here.

We have so much to feel good about, after so long. How good, for example, does the despised Jimbo's trade look now? The Hammer and Olsen for little Bonnie??? What a steal!

I can't remember a DC baseball team -- going back to the Griffith Nats -- coming out April on such a high. And most of it done without Zimm and with Dunn in a slump. Clearly, pitching is everything. And the Nats have reinforcements on the way.

Somebody help me. I'm feelin' faint!

Posted by: nats24 | May 1, 2010 1:40 AM | Report abuse

I like reading about the team, but living in Arizona leave the laws to the people who happen to live here, and oh just thought you'd like to know one our Deputies was shot today by the peace loving illegals.Stick to Baseball..

That was some April for DC baseball. Now we must turn the page and face May where 18 of 29 games are on the road. It won't be easy, but if they can remain around .500 for the month, wow, who knows what this season might be all about. Lets dance.

Posted by: cokedispatch | May 1, 2010 9:02 AM | Report abuse

I've got a feeling about this team, pitching is comming around team era took a serious dip,now if we can get the sticks going who knows i'm still in favor of us finding another bat, someone mentioned Morse(who's on the dl i think)he might be the answer,Volstad and Johnson the next two day's won't be easy and i was wondering where Randy St.Claire landed nice to see he's still in the league wish he was still with the orginization thought he got a raw deal because of Acta's ineptitude.
