Game 6 discussion thread: Nationals at Mets

At about 10:35 this morning, Livan Hernandez walked into the clubhouse for the first time this year, smiling and carefree, and received handshakes and hugs as he walked around the room. His first start is a tough task, matched up against Johan Santana without Ryan Zimmerman in the game. But if he can win, the Nationals can climb to .500 for the first time since April 5, 2008 with a victory today.

When Stephen Strasburg makes his regular season minor league debut later today, Dave Sheinin will be live-blogging from Altoona. Keep on an eye on that post, which will be right above this one.

In this space, chat about today's game.

Posted by: Nats_Lady | April 11, 2010 1:37 PM | Report abuse

sheesh they got the phillies 6 times in their first 9 games? lol brutal.

Posted by: nami322 | April 11, 2010 1:37 PM | Report abuse

Good 1st inning from Livan; Pop-out, single, 6-4-3 DP.

Posted by: BinM | April 11, 2010 1:39 PM | Report abuse

I hope we can extend the lead a bit so I can switch over to watch Strasburg on ESPN3.com. Oh, who am I kidding? I am going to do that anyway. I can always keep the radio away from the computer so 1500 AM comes in clean.

Go Livan!!!!

Way to go Willingham! With Livan on the mound we really needed that lead, lets add 4 more and make it a laugher.

Posted by: Imjustlikemusiq | April 11, 2010 1:41 PM | Report abuse

By the way, I was very impressed with Tavares drawing a walk in the 1st. He's looked like a completely different guy these last two days... I'm sure its just a flash in the pan but his plate discipline has been sublime.

Posted by: Imjustlikemusiq | April 11, 2010 1:43 PM | Report abuse

I got the Nats game on TV and the Strasburg game will be on my internet. MLB.TV is showing it.

Good 1st inning from Livan; Pop-out, single, 6-4-3 DP.

Livo gets into the 6th - so far, so good.

Posted by: BinM | April 11, 2010 2:59 PM | Report abuse

between Livo today and Clip yesterday the bullpen is getting a good rest.

Posted by: Nats_Lady | April 11, 2010 3:06 PM | Report abuse

Fun watching Livo pitch when he's on--especially in contrast to our 1950s "method" pitchers who nibble, agonize over every pitch, and reach their pitch limit in the 4th inning.

Posted by: CapPeterson1 | April 11, 2010 3:13 PM | Report abuse

Keep Livo in for the 8th. He has been in control, and we can ride him a bit longer.

Bergie and his assortment of 410-foot pitches on the mound.

Ladies and gentlemen, the bourbon and Maalox are on me today.

Attaboy Bergmann!!!

Let's go Nationals. Close it out, and let's go to Philly.

Posted by: usmc53 | April 11, 2010 3:44 PM | Report abuse

Eat sh*t K Rod. I'll remember what a prick he is from my seats right next to the Mets bullpen.

Posted by: Kev29 | April 11, 2010 3:51 PM | Report abuse

Hoping we can get K-Rod completely on tilt by getting Super-Willie home...

Posted by: HotNats | April 11, 2010 3:55 PM | Report abuse

Charlie and Dave are bored, talking about having breakfast cereal with or without milk. I can't find a way to relax, knowing that Capps is going to come in to try to save the game.

Let's get an insurance run. Capps doesn't need to earn a save.

O' bullpen(serial pyromaniacs) give up another lead again brutal just brutal. Brian Bruney what are you thinking? walking Wright and then on 3-2, gopher ball! gonna send you back to NY, Syracuse that is! Nice job by Livo perfect example of a major league veteran.

Posted by: dargregmag | April 11, 2010 3:56 PM | Report abuse

Not NICE. Willeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee made a super catch, live with it, Mets.

Posted by: Nats_Lady | April 11, 2010 3:57 PM | Report abuse

Let's see if Guzman is still up by the time I finish this post. He took ball one- strange.

Shot of Bourbon and here we go...!

Posted by: Kev29 | April 11, 2010 4:01 PM | Report abuse

It's April 11th, we've taken a series in Queens and the boos sound GREAT!

Posted by: Kev29 | April 11, 2010 4:05 PM | Report abuse

Mad Capps! Leads the league with three saves. Onto Philthy at .500.

Ain't medicrity grand?

Bourbon and Maalox all around!

Atta-boy Capps! Atta-boys Nats!
Zang Boom (away-game win) go the fireworks!!!

Hoo-ah!!

Posted by: HotNats | April 11, 2010 4:06 PM | Report abuse

Oh my, first time at .500 in two whole years!

Posted by: Kev29 | April 11, 2010 4:06 PM | Report abuse

Two questions:

Not counting Opening Days, what was the last date the Nats were .500?

When was the last date the Nats led a team in their own division?

Posted by: oldwiseman | April 11, 2010 4:06 PM | Report abuse

Nice win! .500 ball!! WOOHOO!

Posted by: Naugatuck-Nats | April 11, 2010 4:06 PM | Report abuse

Never thought we'd chase Santana after 5 innings with Zimm out of the lineup.

Great game Nationals!!

Posted by: usmc53 | April 11, 2010 4:09 PM | Report abuse

Livan with a quality start (7.0IP, 5H, 0ER, 3BB, 1K), Capps with a 1-2-3 save; The Nationals take the series, and move out out of last place in the NL East! Bang, Zoom and well done, boys!

Posted by: BinM | April 11, 2010 4:13 PM | Report abuse

As silly as it seems to get excited about being at .500, it may be just as silly that I am excited not to be in last place from wire-to-wire this year.

Now, if the Senators can hold onto their one-run lead, Strasburg will start the year 1-0.

Last day at .500 - April 5, 2008 (3-3)

Last division lead - the day before that (started season 3-0)

Sorry, last time we were not last in the division was April 9, 2008. Man, things have been really atrocious since that first couple weeks at Nats Park.

Posted by: Kev29 | April 11, 2010 4:21 PM | Report abuse

Great game today, guys. Totally unexpected. Can Livo keep this up all year?

So now the question becomes, when Strasburg, Wang, Detwiler and Zimmermann all begin to work their way into the rotation - who gets sent to the bullpen, who gets sent down and who gets traded?

Posted by: CapitolWill | April 11, 2010 4:30 PM | Report abuse

and that, ladies and gentlemen, is why livo was signed.

Posted by: nami322 | April 11, 2010 4:45 PM | Report abuse

K-Rod? More like F-Rod given what I was lip-reading from him during the 9th. ;-)

Nice to take a road series from the Mets and get to .500 for the first time in two years. Also nice for Livo to have his 200th hit and 100th sac bunt. Love ya, Livo!

Gotta find a way to sneak mlb onto satilite pkg. wife is against any extra's right now, waiting for a check from DC Govt.(money owed) but i don't want to miss any games, anywho who would have thunk it?Santana against Livan and a patchwork lineup and.....................banz,zoom!!! it's Livan who pulls a Halladay and we're at .5oo by the way who's on the mound tommorow?

Posted by: dargregmag | April 11, 2010 5:34 PM | Report abuse

Glad to see Capps come in with the dagger instead of the gas can. Too bad the Elvis wig doesn't go on the road, love to see The Hammer in that getup. A very satisfying series, I checked out the NY Post after the Friday game and they were crowing about getting fat on the Nats. Well Mr. Met -- how do you like us now?

Posted by: Natmeister | April 11, 2010 5:46 PM | Report abuse

How many weeks ago was mgmt talking about trading Willingham? Never could understand that. He's definitely a keeper!

Posted by: Z914 | April 11, 2010 6:06 PM | Report abuse

How happy are we today?!! Mark it down.

Posted by: Nats_Lady | April 11, 2010 6:40 PM | Report abuse

Well, this is NYC, so if you called him F-Wad, it probably wouldn't be unique to you.

And very happy, NatsLady. :-)

If they can split between the Phillies and Mets combined, I think they'll gladly take their chances with the Braves and Marlins. They should match up a little better against Florida this year, and they play the Braves well, up here at least, mostly. As for the rest of the league, well, I'm less sanguine.

If we can just win one against Philly, we'll be 4-5 going into a 6-game stretch against Milwaukee and Colorado. I'd like our chances to climb up above .500.

Posted by: usmc53 | April 11, 2010 7:19 PM | Report abuse

I don't know about that, both the Rockies and Brewers are excellent ballclubs.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, this was a satisfying series - but we're still the Nats.

Posted by: CapitolWill | April 11, 2010 7:28 PM | Report abuse

usmc53: I like your optimism my man but the Rockies spanked us last year and have been playing at a .600 plus clip since Jim Tracy took over last year, we avoid Halladay this go round in Philly but Marquis wasn't impressive in his Nat's debut, 2 day games this series wrapped around a nightie on tues.I wonder if Olsen get's a shot this series or do we wait until we play the Rockies.

Posted by: dargregmag | April 11, 2010 8:47 PM | Report abuse

Break up the Nats--3 of the last 4 and 10 of the last 13!

Posted by: thelonghaul | April 11, 2010 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Hey, we look like a major league club! Keep handing the ball to Livan every 4 days. Optimism?
