Game 35 discussion thread: Nationals at Rockies
With John Lannan making his first start in 10 days, Manager Jim Riggleman will have Miguel Batista and Doug Slaten at the ready in case Lannan falters early. Riggleman wants to stay away from Tyler Walker and Tyler Walker, who have both pitched the last two days. Everyone else in the bullpen should be available.
With four games on tap at Coors Field, that may be a necessary thing. As the Nationals are rolling though a stretch of 20 games in 20 days, they have a tough test with a long series here.
"This is a tough place to play four games in the middle of four games in a row," Riggleman. "We're really looking for our starters to go deep in the ballgame."
For tonight, talk about the game right here.

"Riggleman wants to stay away from Tyler Walker and Tyler Walker, who have both pitched the last two days."
WOW - What are the odds that one team would have TWO guys with the same name?! And they're both pitchers!

Went to weather.com a bit ago...
Nats need to get this to the bottom of the 5th with the lead. Not so sure this one will go the distance.

Dunn has improved so much at first base. Despite almost getting Lannan killed in the first, he's looking more and more comfortable at first, and he's even saved a few high throws. I would say it is amazing the Reds never put him out there, but we waited a bit too. He's much better at 1st than left.

This is tough sledding for Lannan. With a gimpy arm, crap weather, tough park... Let's hope he gets through this jam
Posted by: Kev29 | May 13, 2010 10:21 PM | Report abuse
I hope the rain can hold up another 30 mins -- at least let Lannan get through this another 2 innings.
THEN it can come down big time

Think the Nats should go down 1-2-3 here, get Lannan back on the bump for the latter 1/3 of the Rockies lineup to make this an official game.

A lot of walks by Lannan tonight, gotta cut down on that. Might be due to the rain, who knows.

Could Lannan actually go to Syracuse when Strasburg comes up?

it is more important to win the game than get a W for Lannan; 2 more runs and the umps will wait 4 hours to resume play. Get him outta there

Lannan is melting down.

Lannan just started throwing straight up BP. Shame, he showed a little bit of form early on. Maybe he should skip another start and get the arm closer to 100%.

Lannan without his control is pretty much useless. Hopefully Batista gets out of the inning and the skies open up.

I don't know if the weather is going to get any worse. Gonna have to win this one the old fashioned way - Bourbon and Maalox style.

Whew! That was ugly. Come on rain!
Posted by: CAskinhead | May 13, 2010 10:59 PM | Report abuse
Should have put in Tyler Clippard for the win.
But seriously, they should have gone with Slaten or Burnett against Stewart. Stewart's a lefty, and on the off-chance there's a rain delay immediately after the fifth, you still haven't spent your long man, Bautista.

love the 8 run lead, but i too am awfully concerned about injuries in this condition - for either team. seem ridiculous this hasn't been called yet.

I read the comments about a 5th inning meltdown by lannon, but if these bats finally catch up to our pitching consistently I'm going to have to have a game cast in the kickball dugout ("where my pitches at" - upset the only undefeated team tonight - gotta love adult beer leagues)

It'll be interesting to see how the team performs tomorrow evening after a game like this.
Especially versus Ubaldo.
Posted by: CapitolWill | May 14, 2010 12:47 AM | Report abuse
g3jr, MASN switched immediately over to ESPNews (with the rain delay bug in the corner), don't have my radio nearby to monitor the Sloughes/Jaggeler updates, so, kinda just sitting on my hands here. But I'd have to imagine it's imminent, given the condition of the field before they finally decided to tarp it.
Posted by: HotNats | May 14, 2010 12:47 AM | Report abuse
Sounds like the radio crew is talking phone calls until the game is called, and the callers are morons.
Posted by: CapitolWill | May 14, 2010 12:51 AM | Report abuse
From the ridiculous(Lannan/Chacin) to the sublime tommorow's starters(Jiminez/Hernandez) nice way to start the weekend this should give them a real shot of confidence for the remainder of the road trip.
Posted by: dargregmag | May 14, 2010 12:51 AM | Report abuse
What are the rules here? How long do they have to wait to call it?
Seems like cruel and unusual punishment at this point.
Posted by: CAskinhead | May 14, 2010 1:04 AM | Report abuse
I'd gotta think Livo, et al. are chomping at the bit to respond to their first meeting:
"Ubaldo Jimenez followed up his no-hitter with 7 1/3 shutout innings opposite Livan Hernandez, who allowed two runs in eight innings, as the Rockies edged the Nats behind homers from Ian Stewart and Miguel Olivo."

Wow, what an offensive outburst. Too bad Lannen couldn't have gone 5. You get to thinking about how high the ceiling is for Zimm. If he keeps it up at bat and in the field, has there every been a better third baseman?
Geez, how great is it to watch him and Pudge and Dunn (puleez, can they get him signed!!!)
I think we have a team here, at last.
Posted by: nats24 | May 14, 2010 1:48 AM | Report abuse
Must have fallen asleep before bottom of 8th...
What were umpires thinking? Lucky none of the high-priced talent on either side got hurt: game should have been stopped after Ian Stewart's awkward lunge for ground ball.
But great character-building or character-displaying game for Nats. Agree with Dargregmag: yes we all like Desi but please can not a little love be shown for Guzzie also? His bases-clearing double was the dagger. And Kennedy had a great AB that inning.
Posted by: CapPeterson1 | May 14, 2010 6:32 AM | Report abuse
If Casey Stengel were alive to ask, "Doesn't anybody here know how to play this game?", I've got answers:
Zimm, Desmond, Guzman, Kennedy, Dunn, Pudge, Willingham, Bernardina, Nyjer, etc., etc.
I watched a taped replay of the Strasburg six-inning outing on Wednesday. The guy is flat out boring. No suspense whatsoever. Goes about his business and then retreats to the dugout. A long fly ball out to center was about it in the excitement department. Maybe major league hitters will figure him out. Minor leaguers certainly hsve not.
The Nats will need to keep Bruney et al simply to provide some excitement in games that Strasburg starts.

I've been asking this same question for weeks:
Why doesn't Guzman just bat righty every time? He stinks batting lefty and is great righty. Who cares what the pitcher is left-right whatever. Why don't they just make Guz bat from the right side from now on?
Posted by: dovelevine | May 14, 2010 10:49 AM | Report abuse
If not for Zimm's dingers, I'd plant the wig squarely on Guzman's head. His double was, as fpcsteve said, the dagger, the knock-out blow, a masterful at-bat. Glad to see Boz recount the exchange he had with Riggleman when the organization went with Desmond this spring. Character counts--and Guzzie's got it.
