Game 36 discussion thread: Nationals at Rockies

The first game of the Nationals doubleheader against the Rockies this afternoon will not be televised by MASN because of the 2:10 p.m. start, which interferes with FOX's exclusive window to air games on Saturday. For a Nationals fan, that's got to be pretty rotten.

The good news is, you can follow along right here. I'll try to provide more updates than usual as you discuss Charlie and Dave's call.

A quick note about the doubleheader: Jim Riggleman will try to avoid using one reliever in both games today. If necessary, Miguel Batista and Sean Burnett would be the ones who pitch in both games.

4:42: It's over. After Brian Bruney walked two, allowed two hits and gave up three runs, the Rockies cruised to a 6-2 victory in Game 1.

4:18: The Nats got the tying run to second with one, but they couldn't get him home. Willingham was hit by a pitch, and Willy Taveras pinch ran. He moved second on a sac bunt by Nyjer Morgan. But Kennedy popped foul to third and Dunn drove a fly out to center. It's 3-2, and the Nats have three outs left. Jimenez, having thrown 115 pitches, is likely out.

4:09: The Nationals will bat in the eighth with a shot to tie it. Slaten got a ground out from Jimenez and allowed a single by Gonzalez. Pinch-hitter Ryan Spilborghs grounded weakly up the middle, and Desmond turned it into a 6-3 double play. Josh Willingham is out to pinch hit for Slaten.

4:03: It's hard to beat Ubaldo Jimenez when you're giving him outs. Roger Bernadina, after he singled, was caught stealing to end the inning, the second half of a strike-em-out-throw-em-out double play; Desmond struck out looking. Ivan Rodriguez had struck out to start the inning.

Doug Slaten will replace Hernandez, who threw 100 pitches over six innings. Jimenez is going to stay in and bat. Hernandez allowed three runs in six innings, raising his ERA to 1.46.

3:55: The Rockies took the lead back on a two-out, RBI-single by Ian Stewart. Hernandez put men on first and second with one out after a walk, then struck out Olivo. Up came Stewart. He roped a line drive to the opposite field. Harris got a late jump and made a late dive, but came up just short. Tulowitzki scored from second, giving the Rockies a 3-2 lead after six innings. Jimenez is out for the seventh having thrown 89 pitches.

3:40: Adam Dunn tied up the game with a monstrous home run to the third deck in Coors Field, the first home run Ubaldo Jimenez has allowed all season and in 54 innings dating back to last season. It's tied 2-2, and Ryan Zimmerman just singled in the top of the sixth. It's the first third-deck home run at Coors Field since Ian Stewart in 2008.

3:32: Hernandez retired the Rockies in order, three groundballs to Adam Kennedy. Hernandez has eight groundball outs today through five. The Rockies lead 2-1.

3:23: Jimenez rolled through the Nationas in the fifth. He struck out Bernadina and Hernandez while getting a fly to right from Desmond. It's 2-1 Rockies.

3:16: After a couple of easy fly balls, Hernandez got out of the fourth. Hernandez has allowed four runs to the Rockies this season, all on solo home runs.

3:13: Nats killer Miguel Olivo smashed a solo home run with one out, putting the Rockies ahead 2-1. Olivo also hit a home run against Hernandez in their earlier meeting this year. The Rockies are still batting in the bottom of the fourth.

3:09: Ryan Zimmerman doubled to right-center with one out, but he stayed at second base. Harris nearly atoned with a deep drive to center, but Gonzalez made a running catch on the warning track. Ivan Rodriguez ended the inning with a fly to center. In the middle of the third, it's 1-1.

3:01: Willie Harris made an error in left, but it ended up not costing the Nationals any runs. After two quick outs, Hawpe lined a ball to left. Harris charged and awkwardly slid, maybe even slipped. The ball glanced off his glove and rolled to the wall. Hernandez recovered by striking out Tulowitzki swinging at an 86-mph fastball. Hernandez has clearly frustrated Tulowitzki -- he has struck him out four times this year, and after the latest Tulowitzki slammed his helmet and bat hard to the ground. The error cost Hernadez six pitches, and he's up to 51. It's 1-1 after 3.

2:50: Nyjer Morgan walked with one out, but Miguel Olivo threw him out at second trying to steal. Olivo has thrown Morgan out four times in attempts against the Rockies this year. Might be time to stop testing him. Adam Kennedy flied out deep to left to end the inning. It's 1-1 in the middle of the third.

2:43: Hernandez recovered with three weak grounders surrounding a single by Clint Barmes. 1-1 after 2.

2:37: Jason Giambi hammered a 63-mph curve over the fence in right-center. 1-1, Bottom 2.

2:35: Quick one Jimenez. Grounder to second by Ivan Rodriguez, fly ball to right center by Roger Bernadina, liner to right by Ian Desmond. 1-0 Nats, Mid 2.

2:31: Livan Hernandez lowered his ERA to 1.02 with a scoreless first inning. He got a pop up and a tapper back to himself before Brad Hawpe roped a double to right. Hernandez got out of it by striking out Troy Tulowitzki on a slow curve. 1-0 Nats after one.

2:22: The Nationals struck first against Ubaldo Jimenez. Nyjer Morgan chopped a leadoff single by Nyjer Morgan, third baseman Ian Stewart's head. Morgan moved to second on a groundout by Adam Kennedy. Adam Dunn struck out. Ryan Zimmerman's bat shattered when hit flared a 1-2, 98-mph fastball through the middle. Jimenez was hitting 98 mph and 99 mph with his fastball all inning. Halfway through one, the Nats lead 1-0. At this instant, Livan Hernandez holds the ERA title -- Jimenez's ERA rose to 1.09.

Another reason to Loathe Fox and all they stand for.

That's the way, RZimm.

Posted by: BinM | May 15, 2010 2:20 PM | Report abuse

Zimmerman is good.

Livan era king! Let's keep it that way.

Posted by: thegraneys | May 15, 2010 2:24 PM | Report abuse

And keep the play-by-play coming. At work, game not on TV, no radio access. Let's go Nats!

Posted by: thegraneys | May 15, 2010 2:26 PM | Report abuse

Can someone please tell me what channel the game is on.

Posted by: dgimbz | May 15, 2010 2:29 PM | Report abuse

Aim your ire towards MLB, not Fox.

MLB wanted the maximum revenue from their contract.

Do you care most about money?
Then you gotta grant Fox exclusivity for Saturday.

Do you care most about the fans?
Then accept lesser money from Fox and allow games to be shown in their home markets.

This is 100% MLB's issue.
It's their product.
Fox didn't hold a gun to their head. They held a bag of money.

Posted by: Sunderland | May 15, 2010 2:30 PM | Report abuse

There are 4 other games going on right now and THEY can not see the game because of FOX??

Posted by: CBinDC | May 15, 2010 2:31 PM | Report abuse

dgimbz:

Fox has exclusive rights to Saturday afternoon coverage - no Nats game on tv this afternoon.

Posted by: BinM | May 15, 2010 2:31 PM | Report abuse

If anyone from our local Fox affiliate is reading this, maybe you can work to get a waiver.....real quick! Do something to support your home town team. If not, you are no better than your fox news colleagues.

Posted by: AUParkNatsFan | May 15, 2010 2:32 PM | Report abuse

I am with mjwies11 in hating Tim McCarver, Fox and all that Fox stands for. Next, they'll make us sit through a Sarah Palin speech in order to get the baseball scores. Who dreams up these silly exclusivity rules, BP and Exxon Mobil. I love Charley and Dave, but this is just silly...

Fox is not even showing an F'ng game..at leat the verizon in bethesda isnt

Posted by: Cartaldo | May 15, 2010 2:36 PM | Report abuse

It's a shame to miss watching this matchup. I'm glad we struck first against Jimenez.

If you don't have MLB Gameday yet, today's a good reason to pony up the $19.95 (or it comes free with a membership to NatsTown -- which I found out after already signing up for the audio).

Listening to Charlie and Dave -- ugh, Giambi with the dinger.

Posted by: mo_dc | May 15, 2010 2:36 PM | Report abuse

Agree on Charlie and Dave. Especially Charlie, he's one of the best IMO.

Posted by: thegraneys | May 15, 2010 2:37 PM | Report abuse

I have a friend in Colorado and the game is being broadcast on their local regional sports network....so this might actually be a MASN thing and not a Fox thing..... In addition, I have a friend in New York that is watching the Yankees' game on the New York regional sports network (YES) and a friend in Chicago that is watching the Cubs game on their regional sports network (CSN-Chicago)....

Posted by: Y2kob | May 15, 2010 2:39 PM | Report abuse

Shrug it off Livan. of course he will.

Posted by: thegraneys | May 15, 2010 2:40 PM | Report abuse

SO everybody but us in DC get to watch their GAMES and it's MASN or FOX !!! at fault, even DENVER gets top see the game????

WELL this really is like the 2005 season !!!!

Posted by: CBinDC | May 15, 2010 2:43 PM | Report abuse

The rule is that any game that starts before 1:10 ET can be broadcast locally. That's why last week's Nats game on Sat. afternoon against the Marlins, and a couple other home Saturday afternoon Nats games this year, have been broadcast. This game started at 2:10 ET and therefore is in the six hour window of start times when games are blacked out (until 7 p.m. ET). I doubt that anyone in Colorado is able to see this game locally either.

Everyone knows these rules, so it's MLB's fault for making that rule but also the Rockies for scheduling the game at this time. Obviously they weren't going to start the game at 1 ET, because that would mean an 11 ET local time start. They could have had a twi-night doubleheader and started the first game at 7 ET. But they wanted the two gates, so they chose a day-night doubleheader, thus keeping the game off of television.

Posted by: TheFingerman | May 15, 2010 2:44 PM | Report abuse

Slight correction to my earlier post, the Colorado regional sports network (FSRM) is providing television coverage via the internet on MLB.tv for people who are out of market but if you are in Denver you see a boxing match... Still odd though that people who are not in Denver or D.C. can watch the Nats game via the internet (on MLB.TV) but people in New York and Chicago are allowed to watch their home teams on their regional sports networks....

Posted by: Y2kob | May 15, 2010 2:46 PM | Report abuse

If the game starts by ! PM in the area of the team involved it can be televised locally. This game started at 12 noon in Denver but 2 PM in DC.

Some of the Saturday Nats games earlier this year were televised locally because they started at 1 PM.

Posted by: cal493 | May 15, 2010 2:46 PM | Report abuse

The one thing you should fault MASN for is not even giving enough of a crap to run a crawl on the screen explaining that they aren't carrying the game and why.

Posted by: TheFingerman | May 15, 2010 2:47 PM | Report abuse

I just want to know who do I get to hate MORE then usual FOX or MASN?

Posted by: CBinDC | May 15, 2010 2:48 PM | Report abuse

CBinDC - The answer is MLB.

Posted by: Sunderland | May 15, 2010 2:53 PM | Report abuse

@CBinDC:
You should hate MLB and the Rockies. MLB agreed to the blackout rules and the Rockies scheduled the game in the blackout window. Not MASN's fault and can't really blame Fox.

Do you think at some point Riggleman and Nyjer will figure out that Miguel Oliva is not inclined to let someone run on him.
I think Nyjer's been CS 3 times against Oliva this season.

Posted by: Sunderland | May 15, 2010 2:55 PM | Report abuse

It's a beautiful day. Go outside for the afternoon and just watch tonight's game later. It's ok to miss one game.

Nyjer vs Oliva.
April 19th, Nyjer caught, Olivo 1 - Nyjer 0
April 20, nothing
April 21, nothing
April 22, Nyjer caught, Olivo 2 - Nyjer 0
May 13, Nyjer caught, Olivo 3 - Nyjer 0
And today, Olivo goes up 4 - 0 on Nyjer.

You gotta know when to fold 'em.
Stay put TPlush.

That's darn near Dunn-like.
And he has shut down our running game.

Well we can just about kiss this one goodbye. Brian freaking Bruney has entered the game.

Posted by: dcsportsfan13 | May 15, 2010 4:22 PM | Report abuse

Bad news - Nats are down 3-2. Worse news - Bruney is in to pitch the 8th.

Putting in Bruney = conceding game 1.

Posted by: mo_dc | May 15, 2010 4:29 PM | Report abuse

Brian Bruney - Turning close games into blowouts since 2005.

Posted by: BinM | May 15, 2010 4:32 PM | Report abuse

Why in hell would Riggs go with Bruney in a one-run game? Does he have to keep proving to him that he cannot get an out in order for Riggleman to stop using him? I think we've found our man to make room for Storen.

Posted by: dcsportsfan13 | May 15, 2010 4:33 PM | Report abuse

Might as well let Bruney pitch the ninth no point in wasting another reliever after this disaster.

WHEN IS RIZZO GOING TO GET TIRED OF LOOKING AT THIS GUY???????

Posted by: peteywheatstraw | May 15, 2010 4:33 PM | Report abuse

Bruney has played his last game as a National.

Posted by: EnricoPolatzo | May 15, 2010 4:33 PM | Report abuse

Can we admit that we've seen all we need to see of Bruney? It doesn't have to be Storen, but can we at least have English back please?

Posted by: stantonpark | May 15, 2010 4:34 PM | Report abuse

Enrico, I fear you're right. The guy is a liability and has had a number of opportunities to prove otherwise. I'd rather see Chico.

Posted by: SorenKierkegaard | May 15, 2010 4:36 PM | Report abuse

On the plus side, Livo's outing kept our bullpen from getting exhausted (as did Ubaldo for them), and using Bruney hopefully won't play any role in nightcap.

The Nats actually had some good strokes against Jimenez and a few chances.

I think we can agree that MASN should have at least had a screen or crawler or something announcing the game wasn't available due to MLB blackout rules or similar.

Bruney is just horrible. Time and again. Storen arrival next week?

Posted by: mo_dc | May 15, 2010 4:37 PM | Report abuse

Adam can you pls find out between games how much longer are they sticking with Bruney .......that inning sure looked better on radio ....thanks Charlie and Dave

Posted by: CBinDC | May 15, 2010 4:39 PM | Report abuse

Bruney needs to be removed from this team immediately. Whatever he had is long gone.

Posted by: vagator | May 15, 2010 4:40 PM | Report abuse

They just need to Dukes Bruney, dont even give him the option of going to AAA just get him out of our organization.

Posted by: peteywheatstraw | May 15, 2010 4:41 PM | Report abuse

Please, please, please NO MORE Bruney!!!!!!

Posted by: jwainwright1 | May 15, 2010 4:41 PM | Report abuse

I saw the score and just logged in to chat. I was going to ask the same three questions everyone else here is asking:
- Why is Bruney still on our roster?
- Why is he coming in to a 1-run game?
- Why is he still in there after walking the first two batters?

Dump this trash!

Posted by: g3jr | May 15, 2010 4:42 PM | Report abuse

It's time to give Joel Peralta a shot since we're still a couple weeks away from Storen. Send Bruney down and promote him. Then axe him for Storen in a couple weeks if he doesn't cut it. If he does then Batista or Walker.

mo_dc, bruney=conceding game 1 was EXACTLY the thought I had when he came into the game. Just because English has options doesn't mean he failed to earn his place in this bullpen. BRING JESSE BACK!!

A 2.3+WHIP for Bruney so far this season, and more walks than IP; That is completely unacceptable.
I think the fans have spoken their minds; It's time for the team to swallow the $1.5M contract & just move on. Bring up Morse & Storen - cut Bruney & Taveras, or maybe Coste.

Posted by: BinM | May 15, 2010 5:03 PM | Report abuse

Get Storen up now, have Burney do mop up work until he gets it together.

Posted by: thegraneys | May 15, 2010 5:06 PM | Report abuse

Bruney's contract is not much money, relatively speaking. The Nats famously won the Bruney arbitration case, remember? Bruney couldn't believe he wasn't going to get paid?

They really, REALLY need to eat that contract and dump BBBBBBBruney off the roster now. I think we are at Storen time, aren't we? It's May 15. Come on, bring the closer of the future up to the bigs!

Posted by: shepdave2003 | May 15, 2010 5:06 PM | Report abuse

English is not a setup guy. He got beat in SYR by late comer Slaten. Storen IS A SETUP guy. As is Peralta. Both of these guys should be brought up soon.

As far as English? Batista is in his slot. He or Andrew Kown would be a lot better ... why oh why is he there. He is really terrible. How did Batista a non-roster invitee beat out English. One word: Riggleman and his love of his vets (from Chicago / Seattle?). Vilone will likely be brought up before English as a result I suspect.

In other News: Mike Cameron beat the Chiefs with a home run. Mike Morse his a home run, his 3rd. Chico only lasted 3 innings before giving way to Wilkie who pitched 2 scoreless innings. English followed Wilkie and took the loss as he allowed a homer to Cameron. He now has a 7.94 ERA in Syracuse his record is now 1 - 1. Joel Peralta followed for 2 innings and gave up no earned runs, but walked 3 while striking out 4. His ERA is currently 1.13.

Posted by: periculum | May 15, 2010 5:08 PM | Report abuse

Oooops Mike Cameron hit his home run off of Matt Chico in the third inning.

Posted by: periculum | May 15, 2010 5:09 PM | Report abuse

For Chris Duncan fans: Looks like he went 0 for 1 but walked 3 times. He did strike out once. His BA is now .241 same as JMax.

Posted by: periculum | May 15, 2010 5:13 PM | Report abuse

Dont hold out hope that Bruney will ever be able to get it together, this guy has never thrown strikes in his entire career and there is no reason to believe he will ever be able to learn. Just cut him.

Posted by: peteywheatstraw | May 15, 2010 5:19 PM | Report abuse

BinM, they can not cut Coste. He must stay on the 40 man for 1 year. I didn't like the Coste claim when it happened, I like it less now. We need roster spots, and we can't take his away from him.
It also guarantees that either Flores does not come back this year, or Nieves gets DFA'd.
We can't have Flores come back, keep Nieves, and have 10% of our 40 man roster be catchers. Goofy.

Posted by: Sunderland | May 15, 2010 5:35 PM | Report abuse

@Sunderland,
Good points all about the Coste situation.

One thing about the Chico outing -- his short stint, and the schedule might make him the default option for Wednesday after Livo's 100 pitches today.

Note: Ladson reports Morse will be called up Monday.

Posted by: mo_dc | May 15, 2010 5:53 PM | Report abuse

Release Bruney. He's gonna cost you the same money either way, but you don't have to let him cost you your season, too.

Livan gave them another quality start, a shot at winning, and spared the bullpen on a day they needed it. He's amazing.

And boo MASN for not giving people a clue about what happened. They, and Angelos, suck.

Posted by: Meridian1 | May 15, 2010 6:11 PM | Report abuse

Picked this up from Bill Ladson's tweets:

Jim Riggleman was visably upset that the game went out of hand after Brian Bruney entered the game.

Jim Riggleman said the Nats are thinking about making a move on RHP Brian Bruney.
