Game 41 discussion thread: Nationals vs. Mets

The Washington Nationals (20-20, third in NL East) look to end a five-game losing streak in their first game back at Nationals Park since leaving for a nine-game road trip. They'll have Adam Dunn back in the lineup and right-hander Livan Hernandez (4-2, 1.46 ERA) on the mound.

The Mets (19-21, fifth in NL East) have lost six of seven and send right-hander R.A. Dickey to the bump for the first time this season. Dickey, 35, was promoted from Class AAA Buffalo of the International League, where he went 4-2 with a 2.23 ERA in eight starts.

The Nationals have won five consecutive games over the Mets at Nationals Park since dropping 30 of 39 at home against their division rival. Washington is 4-2 against New York this season, with all six games played at Citi Field.

C'mon Zim...What's up with all the side arm tosses? Dunn might need to start practicing yoga

Tough home-field error on RZim, but no damage otherwise. Now, let's see what this knuckleballer has to offer.

Reposted from earlier thread:

@Dovelevine:
Caught your comments on Kearns on an earlier thread. You know, I pretty much agreed with all the Kearns-bashing that went on here last year. But then I read that after the season, he had operations to correct three different problems in his hand and wrist. Now, playing hurt is often considered a virtue, but in AK's case it clearly was not. I wish he had called a halt sooner and had his physical problems fixed. I would wait until he undergoes a swoon before fixing the evil eye on him as you did.

I don't get the triple play. Can someone clue me in here?

Posted by: Charley_XF | May 19, 2010 8:48 PM | Report abuse

Runners were on first and second. When the ball was hit they moved up to second and third. The ball was caught so throws to second and first caught the runners not tagging up.

Posted by: marathoner | May 19, 2010 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Gotcha. Didn't see the runners advance. Saw the batter on first when they threw it there and assumed it was the runner. I figured they tagged up and stayed put.

Thanks.

I didn't catch it at first either but on the replay noticed it was Morgan who had walked who was on second. Not really much they could have done on that play.

Livan pitched well for 3 days rest. 4 hits and 2 runs over 6.1 innings.

Storen in now. We need some offense

Storen! Another scoreless inning!

Nice to see Ted Leonsis taking in a Nats game.

Guzman!

Posted by: CAskinhead | May 19, 2010 9:21 PM | Report abuse

Ooh! Guzman could have been gunned down stretching that double into a triple.

Good to see the Nats rewarded for some small ball. Good job Ian, Adam.

Is anyone watching in Montgomery County on Comcast HD? Is your picture breaking up every time they change the camera shot?

Posted by: MKadyman | May 19, 2010 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Storen's throwing strikes. Maybe give Capps a night off?

Clippard's throwing strikes. Maybe give Capps a night off?

Who wears the silver Elvis tonight?

Alert play by Kennedy on the squeeze play may have won the game. Nice to see a heads-up play.

Thank goodness the Mets are in NL East. Can the Nats please beat somebody else?? (my wife and sons don't share my connection to DC, and want to stay Mets fans)

Another great outing by Livo. And some clutch hits.

I hope MLB sanctions the umps for the terrible handling of the call on the triple play. It should not have happened, given the bad throw by Pagen from CF.

Whew! Lucky to escape the Angel Pagan show. Fortunately the Mets are more snakebit than we are.

Great night at the ballpark! I am waiting to see the replay of the triple play when I get home. Looked like a trap from the first base line and Tony plush seemed to think so with a perfect view as he continued to second base.

Glad storen got the win - in a clippard like fashion! Nice job Livo on short rest and we didn't burn out the 'pen! SS coming up in a few weeks and let's get back on the winning horse!

Sorry if anyone planned on setting the DVR for the Strasburg start - MASN balls'd it up big time. They just switched it on from ESPN News in mid-sentence.

Finally, some timely hitting and who delivers? GUZMAN!!!! yeah the same player a lot of you want gone, the same player who if he wasn't here this team would be under.500, the same player who's been as consistent with the bat as anyone on this team the same player who should be the starting second baseman thank goodness Riggleman doesn't read or pay attention to the blogs.

Storen also had two helpings of dessert. mmmm....pie...

Good on Livo for giving us a quality start on short rest. Good on the batters for some nice situational hitting. And good on the 'pen for holding the lead.

Oh, and Guuuuuuzzzzz! :-)

Anybody know if there's ever been a case where a player hit into a triple play and then hit a triple in his next at-bat?

Posted by: Juan-John1 | May 19, 2010 11:29 PM | Report abuse

@J-J:
I second your question and broaden it slightly. Has anyone ever hit into a triple-play and hit a triple in the same game?
