nyjer's already messing up. he needs to sit for a few games

Looks like Morgan should have taken another day off.

Posted by: CAskinhead | May 22, 2010 4:13 PM | Report abuse

Wish someone could get a timely hit.

Posted by: marathoner | May 22, 2010 4:32 PM | Report abuse

can you still get Slewes radio online?

MLB is trying to get me to pay only. but I can't tell if thats just a popup ad, or if I have to pay.

Posted by: MalcolmYoung | May 22, 2010 4:42 PM | Report abuse

Dunn, Hammer, and Pudge have GOT to be able to get those hits when we have opportunities. dammit

Posted by: DCguy7 | May 22, 2010 4:48 PM | Report abuse

Hammer time!

Posted by: CAskinhead | May 22, 2010 5:06 PM | Report abuse

Malcolm, yes, MLB radio is not free. Good deal, esp. if you like to listen to other games, but it's $15 or $20/year, IIRC.

Posted by: Sec3mysofa | May 22, 2010 5:06 PM | Report abuse

Pudge hurt while swinging for the fence.

Posted by: Tom8 | May 22, 2010 5:10 PM | Report abuse

OK, NOW you sit him down for a few games...

Posted by: Sec3mysofa | May 22, 2010 5:15 PM | Report abuse

are you kidding me, Nyger? he ought to be sitting for that little demonstration. not to mention missing the catch in the first place.

Posted by: DCguy7 | May 22, 2010 5:15 PM | Report abuse

Nyger! That ball wasn't even over the fence!

Posted by: marathoner | May 22, 2010 5:15 PM | Report abuse

Get Morgan the hell off of this team. He is NOT a major league center fielder. He needs to be sent down tonight.

Posted by: MKadyman | May 22, 2010 5:16 PM | Report abuse

Nyjer at the climax of his frustration. hanley ramirez?

Posted by: Tom8 | May 22, 2010 5:16 PM | Report abuse

That is about the fourth ball seriously misplayed at the wall in about a week, leading to the second ITPHR. What is the problem with these guys and playing balls at the wall? Harris, Willingham, Morgan, all of them.

Posted by: Meridian1 | May 22, 2010 5:16 PM | Report abuse

dude has been playing horrible for the last couple of weeks.

Posted by: nami322 | May 22, 2010 5:16 PM | Report abuse

nyjer. sorry. i'm mad.

Posted by: DCguy7 | May 22, 2010 5:17 PM | Report abuse

WOW - not even Nook Logan ever did THAT. Un-believable.

Posted by: LeeM9308 | May 22, 2010 5:17 PM | Report abuse

Never seen an OF throw his glove like that on a ball in play. Inexcusable. He thought the ball was over the fence? Then that's extremely poor judgment. He has to sit.

Posted by: CapPeterson1 | May 22, 2010 5:20 PM | Report abuse

If Riggs had any stones he would bench Morgan.

Posted by: dovelevine | May 22, 2010 5:22 PM | Report abuse

that was a beautiful hit and run.

Posted by: nami322 | May 22, 2010 5:24 PM | Report abuse

As a kid I remember the other team automatically got an extra base if you threw your glove. Not acceptable at any level.

On the other hand, go Guz.

Posted by: marathoner | May 22, 2010 5:24 PM | Report abuse

My kid would be pulled in a little league game if he pulled a stunt like that. Really disappointed in Riggs for not benching the baby.
All this talk about improving defense. Morgan is worse than Milledge. 2 inside the park hrs in a week both his fault. Absurd. What a freakin joke.

Posted by: dovelevine | May 22, 2010 5:27 PM | Report abuse

One of the first things you learn is go all the way back, feel the wall, then come up to the ball if you need to. Instead, all the Nats outfielders (possibly except Bernadina) go back to the wall tentatively and then are out of position for balls that are catchable.

This should be coachable stuff.

Posted by: Meridian1 | May 22, 2010 5:34 PM | Report abuse

Riggle made a huge mistake in not benching Nyjer. I don't care if he thought it was a home run, you can't do that. Nyjer should have been taken out of the game in the middle of the inning, IMO.

Posted by: cassander | May 22, 2010 5:45 PM | Report abuse

this is why I said a couple days ago that I don't like stammen as a major league starter. I just don't think he has it. And I don't wanna hear about BABIP or anything like that.

Posted by: nami322 | May 22, 2010 5:46 PM | Report abuse

freak play. yes it was bad. still just crazy. morgan a million miles better than milledge, please. also, its "nyjer"

Posted by: MalcolmYoung | May 22, 2010 5:49 PM | Report abuse

How much you want to bet Frank would have pulled him off the field right then and there?

Posted by: Sec3mysofa | May 22, 2010 5:52 PM | Report abuse

It's starting to rain, and it sounds like somebody is chanting "LET'S GO HOME! LET'S GO HOME!"

Posted by: Sec3mysofa | May 22, 2010 5:56 PM | Report abuse

so he is benched. keep calling him nyger, idiots.

Posted by: MalcolmYoung | May 22, 2010 6:01 PM | Report abuse

It was a misspelling. And he's not benched. Hope he can get another hit like his last at bat.

Posted by: marathoner | May 22, 2010 6:05 PM | Report abuse

you weren't the only one. sorry, he wasn't benched. i thought the announcers said later gonzalez was pinch hitting for him. that wasn't the case, and hit a sac fly. i did screw up there.

i just find the angry vitriol a little overblown. "my half-retarded kid would have been benched" your kid never made it out of little league for other reasons. come on. it was bad, i admit. but it was a little freaky.

Posted by: MalcolmYoung | May 22, 2010 6:18 PM | Report abuse

bats look like theyre waking up

Posted by: nami322 | May 22, 2010 6:18 PM | Report abuse

I should let Air Lift (son of Bold Venture, full brother of Assault) rest in peace, but ... throwing a hissy fit mid-play is just not OK. Errors, even clumsy ones, are going to happen, but being a jerk about it is a choice.

Posted by: Sec3mysofa | May 22, 2010 6:24 PM | Report abuse

I was dumbfounded by Nyjer's play at the wall. I haven't seen the game so poorly played since, well, Hanley Ramirez. But I'm glad Riggleman didn't bench him right away--the boos when he came up to the plate were something he needed to hear. I'd definitely have him sit the next couple, though.

Posted by: SorenKierkegaard | May 22, 2010 6:45 PM | Report abuse

pull zimmerman, little league.

Posted by: MalcolmYoung | May 22, 2010 6:55 PM | Report abuse

Bats may have awakened but their heads sure don't seem to be in the game. Zimm either thought the ball was falling in or thought there were two outs. Either way a bad play that stalled a possible big inning.

Posted by: marathoner | May 22, 2010 7:00 PM | Report abuse

yea well...it happens i thought there was no chance adam jones would get to that. a win is a win.

Posted by: nami322 | May 22, 2010 7:06 PM | Report abuse

A win but a badly played game. Not sure what's going on with these guys. I have more confidence that Riggleman can keep their heads in the game then Acta did, but it's a concern.

Posted by: Meridian1 | May 22, 2010 7:09 PM | Report abuse

It's a curly W, but Riggleman and Rizzo can't be real happy. Nyjer is becoming a real problem - he is really pressing, for no good reason. He is NOT the FOF. It's NOT all on his shoulders. Relax. Sit for a few days. Or maybe go to Syracuse if you can't understand that. Bernadina is an adequate CF.

Posted by: LeeM9308 | May 22, 2010 7:10 PM | Report abuse

and yet, Capps went out of his way to praise Nyjer in the postgame. They must really like the guy. I reckon we should take their word for it.

Posted by: Sec3mysofa | May 22, 2010 7:14 PM | Report abuse

Wonder if (1) anyone will have the stones to ask Riggleman in the presser if he considered lifting Morgan and (2) Rizzo will weigh in on this.

Funny that just a couple of days ago Tyler Walker was talking about showing the younguns in the bullpen how to "play the game the right way," passing on the tradition he learned from John Franco et al.

Posted by: CapPeterson1 | May 22, 2010 7:16 PM | Report abuse

The scoring should have been triple and error giving him home on Nyjer's boner.

Riggs did say his initial impulse was to bench him but it was a bad play not a no-hustle play, and the team needed the player out there because the bench was short with Pudge out. "Taking him out would have been for me, not for what the team needed right then." As best I remember.

Agree that he needs some coaching on technique and keeping his head in the game.

Posted by: utec | May 22, 2010 8:12 PM | Report abuse

Dunn, too, in the postgame locker room, said something to the effect of, he's an emotional player, that's his game, we take the bad with the good.

Posted by: Sec3mysofa | May 22, 2010 9:16 PM | Report abuse

Morgan's play this season (can't steal/can't field/can't hit) really reveals why the Pirates organization thought a straight-up trade of Morgan for Milledge was a no-brainer. They probably even thought they had made a steal! In reality, Sean Burnett for gascan was the steal.

Posted by: 1stBaseCoach | May 22, 2010 9:34 PM | Report abuse

I didn't see the Nyjer miscue but i'm sure it will be on TWWLIS and MLB network that being stated it's obvious to me that this kid is really pressing and some of the remarks i've read on this blog are beyond stupid and insensitive,i'm sure Riggleman will sit him down and have a talk with him, here in Atlanta the Braves lost nine in a row about a month ago and you should have heard the "fans" calling into the post game show"s wanting Bobby Cox fired,Teddy Pendleton fired, the GM fired, the pitching coach fired,Chipper Jones released(now that was hilarious)i say that to say we're at .500, FIVE FREAKIN HUNDRED folks, we win tommorow and we head west one game over.500.We need to take a step back, hey i'm as crazy about the Nat's as anyboby but think about it despite everything that's happened this team is hanging in there and so should we so everyone "CHILL OUT"

Posted by: dargregmag | May 22, 2010 9:51 PM | Report abuse

@dargregmag -- right on. Yes, we're at .500 -- let's remember that last year after 40 games the Nats were 12-28. So, maybe we're not pennant contenders this year -- but it's still a *huge* improvement over last year. Not a bad jump in just one year.
