Bryce Harper speaks
Bryce Harper participated in a conference call today with local media. While he revealed little about his thoughts on his upcoming negotiation, mostly dodging questions about his future, he talked about becoming a prospective National and being the first pick in the draft.
"I'm just trying to enjoy it with my family right now," Harper said. "It's been my dream since I was 7 years old. It came true. I'm trying to enjoy it right now."
Here's Harper's call, somewhat abridged:
On playing outfield: "I'm pretty stoked about that. Wherever they need me out there, I don't really care. I'll play wherever they need me."
On his negotiation: Long pause. "I don't know. I'll leave the negotiation to Boras and stuff like that."
On when he hopes to make the majors: "Right now, I'm just trying to relax and just kind of hang out and have fun with my family and friends and things like that. I'm not really concentrating on baseball right now. I'm just trying to get into the gym and put some weight on, things like that. I'm just trying to get bigger, stronger and faster. I'm just trying to enjoy this and have a little fun over the summer. Go do some fishing."
On his one year at the College of Southern Nevada: "I wouldn't take anything back. I had an absolute blast. It was just a great experience."
More on his future plans: "I'm just really trying to have fun right now. Whatever the team wants, whatever the team needs, I'll do."
Harper said he met Mike Rizzo during one of his games at the College of Southern Nevada over the first weekend in May. They spoke today and talked about Stephen Strasburg and baseball. "It's going to be a big night for him," Harper said. He also called Rizzo "a great guy."
Harper said he's never met or talked to Strasburg. "It would be absolutely amazing to come in and play with him and try to build a winning team with the Nationals," Harper said.
On not wearing his eye-black war paint: "That's totally fine. I wasn't going to bring that to major leagues, anyway. I didn't wear it with Team USA. That's part of the game."
Harper said he may not be able to catch Strasburg's debut because he is flying tonight. "Hopefully I'll DVR it and watch it after," he said.
