Game 59 discussion thread: Nationals vs. Pirates
Just Game 59, eh? Strasmas is here. Stephen Strasburg is going to pitch no more than six innings and probably no more than 90 pitches tonight, Jim Riggleman said. Riggleman doesn't think the crowd tonight will have an effect on the Nationals, and he knows it won't have an effect on him. "I'm like Alfred E. Newman," Riggleman told me. "What, me worry?"
Stephen Strasburg was staying cool, too. He was watching the Discovery Channel before the game while every other channel was tuned ESPN -- so, basically, about him. Strasburg's warm-up music? The White Stripes. Seven-Nation Army.
Tom Hallion is the home plate umpire. Follow the game and get updates with Barry Svrluga's chat. And enjoy.

Sitting here in California watching the free look-in on MLB.com (for the first 4 innings)
As a Washington baseball fan from the days of the Senators at Griffith, man, my heart is swelled with pride seeing the packed house and feeling the electricity.
Major league baseball is really, finally back in ol' DC

MASN needs to stop trying to show pitch replays. Strasburg works too fast.

Electric in left field after three innings and six Ks! Here it appears everyonf knows to get on up for 2 strikes! Six Ks in first nine batters!

Having some bandwidth problems with the chat, so I'll hang here with you folks tonight. My thoughts so far...
----------------
It looked like Young hit a decent pitch for the HR (down, but middle of the plate).
----------------
Strasburg's curve/slider (slurve/clide) is wicked good so far tonight.
----------------
Other than Zimmerman "feeling the moment" in the first, the offense seems to be playing down to Karstens tonight.

One thing about SS - he is teaching the crowd how to cheer with 2 strikes! Not that there's been much reason to cheer in past years! Lots of energy in left field and around the park!
Gotta say that Pirates home run looked like a flick of the wrist... Game is moving very quickly! 8:20 through 5? Let's get a W for stras, which means get ahead NOW!
Posted by: mo_dc | June 8, 2010 8:20 PM | Report abuse
So, I'm totally blacked-out in my area for the game, but I hear it's 2-1 Pirates on a two run home run. I thought this would happen..

TEN!!!!!
Posted by: mo_dc | June 8, 2010 8:27 PM | Report abuse
81 pitches through 6IP; Strasburg might be done for the evening.
Posted by: BinM | June 8, 2010 8:29 PM | Report abuse
ELEVEN!!! If SS keeps this up, I will be blocked from too many posts!
We gotta get some runs to get him outta here with a chance for the W but def not the loss!!! Cmon Nats, do it with the bats! Making Karstens look like an all-star!

Heart of the order up - Let's get a couple of runs & give the kid a n/d at the very least.

Back-to-Back from Dunn & Willingham! The middle of the order (RZimm-Dunn-Willingham) delivers, big-time!
Get the bullpen ready - between Walker, Burnett, Storen, Clippard & Capps, there are arms available & ready.

Why does FIOS show the Nationals game in the Guide for MLB but the Mets game is on? This is supposed to be a nationally televised game. Who is the bonehead who blacked out Northern Virginia when the game is sold out?

Posted by: BinM | June 8, 2010 8:53 PM | Report abuse
tomd5 - the game is blacked out because MASN(2) has the local rights to the game. National everywhere else except DC area and Pittsburgh.

WOW!!! going NUTS on the stands!

Musings on the delivery of the second shaving cream pie:
* Scott Olsen had the demeanor of a serial killer.
* That is all.
Posted by: Ted_Striker | June 8, 2010 9:34 PM | Report abuse
What a good feeling! I hope the Nats made a lot of new fans tonight out of that crowd. And thank you, Bobby Carpenter, for slipping in the mention of the Big Train.
The new locomotive just arrived the station.

Walter Johnson has dead for more than 60 years, so he was not seen in the stands I would think. At least not that Walter Johnson.

Now let's go out and start a winning streak so i can go to work and shut those smart azz Braves fan's the hell up, i guess Strasburg is scheduled to pitch again in Cleland(as Richard Pryor used to say) cannot wait to see him pitch again and did you check out his presser the kid is so professional and the command on his pitch's, man! This kid is something else and that is putting it mildly.GO NATS!!!

All time MLB record for a debut is 15 K's. Not bad, not bad . . .
And zero walks! Gotta love that!
I enjoyed the strikeout he got after falling behind 3-0. And, yeah, the last two on six straight pitches.
Baseball has been re-born in DC!
Posted by: ADCWonk | June 8, 2010 10:20 PM | Report abuse
just back from the game. wow, just wow. the place was going absolutely nuts after the top of the 7th. what a way to finish his first start. and kudos to the middle of the lineup for coming through for the kid. looked for a minute like he might not get the W. outstanding performance.
Posted by: DCguy7 | June 8, 2010 10:24 PM | Report abuse
Uh oh... Zim, Dunn, and Hammer all homering on the same night. If they all get locked in and we got the Strasmania going on with him pitching in every 5 days, we might start reeling off some wins at a nice clip here. I'm getting all steamed up.
One word: Phenom

Yeah, okay. That was pretty impressive.
Awesome that they brought out the Silver Fox wig where the fans could see it, imo.
Would also be awesome if all those fans would come out when somebody not named SS was pitching.
Posted by: natsfan1a1 | June 8, 2010 10:34 PM | Report abuse
Btw, one other person mentioned it but Scott Olsen's face before he pie'd SS again was CLASSIC. The guy looked like a complete psychopath.
Posted by: Imjustlikemusiq | June 8, 2010 10:34 PM | Report abuse
Yeah, I liked how he first offers a dry towel for wipe-up purposes. Waits a beat. Then he goes in for the kill. That's cold. :-)

Agreed. Churchy really helped us in '05. And you guys might not believe it, but Lastings is a pretty nice kid. Not a great ballplayer, but I hung out with him at an event and he's a good guy.

I was so in awe over Stras' performance. His confidence has the potential of becoming a contagious VIRUS. It certainly looked like it after Zim, Dunn, and J.Will gave us 3 runs. Stras' speed and control are fantastic.

Wow. Back from the park. Stayed to watch pies and the Silver Fox. What a fantastic game. Strausburg was all he was hyped to be, and I loved that the heart of the order came through for the kid. My kids were so enthused that we stood in line to by Jeezus Jerseys. Just a perfect night.
