Game 59 discussion thread: Nationals vs. Pirates

Just Game 59, eh? Strasmas is here. Stephen Strasburg is going to pitch no more than six innings and probably no more than 90 pitches tonight, Jim Riggleman said. Riggleman doesn't think the crowd tonight will have an effect on the Nationals, and he knows it won't have an effect on him. "I'm like Alfred E. Newman," Riggleman told me. "What, me worry?"

Stephen Strasburg was staying cool, too. He was watching the Discovery Channel before the game while every other channel was tuned ESPN -- so, basically, about him. Strasburg's warm-up music? The White Stripes. Seven-Nation Army.

Tom Hallion is the home plate umpire. Follow the game and get updates with Barry Svrluga's chat. And enjoy.

Stephen J. Strasburg has a perfect game through one.

Sitting here in California watching the free look-in on MLB.com (for the first 4 innings)

As a Washington baseball fan from the days of the Senators at Griffith, man, my heart is swelled with pride seeing the packed house and feeling the electricity.

Major league baseball is really, finally back in ol' DC

Posted by: CAskinhead | June 8, 2010 7:32 PM | Report abuse

MASN needs to stop trying to show pitch replays. Strasburg works too fast.

Posted by: driggs1 | June 8, 2010 7:40 PM | Report abuse

ditto to driggs1

Posted by: skidge | June 8, 2010 7:41 PM | Report abuse

Electric in left field after three innings and six Ks! Here it appears everyonf knows to get on up for 2 strikes! Six Ks in first nine batters!

Posted by: mo_dc | June 8, 2010 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Having some bandwidth problems with the chat, so I'll hang here with you folks tonight. My thoughts so far...
----------------
It looked like Young hit a decent pitch for the HR (down, but middle of the plate).
----------------
Strasburg's curve/slider (slurve/clide) is wicked good so far tonight.
----------------
Other than Zimmerman "feeling the moment" in the first, the offense seems to be playing down to Karstens tonight.

Posted by: BinM | June 8, 2010 8:15 PM | Report abuse

One thing about SS - he is teaching the crowd how to cheer with 2 strikes! Not that there's been much reason to cheer in past years! Lots of energy in left field and around the park!

Gotta say that Pirates home run looked like a flick of the wrist... Game is moving very quickly! 8:20 through 5? Let's get a W for stras, which means get ahead NOW!

Posted by: mo_dc | June 8, 2010 8:20 PM | Report abuse

So, I'm totally blacked-out in my area for the game, but I hear it's 2-1 Pirates on a two run home run. I thought this would happen..

Posted by: bromisky | June 8, 2010 8:23 PM | Report abuse

TEN!!!!!

Posted by: mo_dc | June 8, 2010 8:27 PM | Report abuse

81 pitches through 6IP; Strasburg might be done for the evening.

Posted by: BinM | June 8, 2010 8:29 PM | Report abuse

ELEVEN!!! If SS keeps this up, I will be blocked from too many posts!

We gotta get some runs to get him outta here with a chance for the W but def not the loss!!! Cmon Nats, do it with the bats! Making Karstens look like an all-star!

Posted by: mo_dc | June 8, 2010 8:31 PM | Report abuse

Heart of the order up - Let's get a couple of runs & give the kid a n/d at the very least.

Posted by: BinM | June 8, 2010 8:31 PM | Report abuse

BOO-YAH, Dunn!!

Posted by: BinM | June 8, 2010 8:34 PM | Report abuse

Dunn!

Posted by: CAskinhead | June 8, 2010 8:34 PM | Report abuse

Hammer!

These are for the kid

Posted by: CAskinhead | June 8, 2010 8:36 PM | Report abuse

Back-to-Back from Dunn & Willingham! The middle of the order (RZimm-Dunn-Willingham) delivers, big-time!
Get the bullpen ready - between Walker, Burnett, Storen, Clippard & Capps, there are arms available & ready.

Got my 7 yr.grandson watching here in the A-T-L after SS 11th K Miles turns to me and says "hey grandaddy he's real good" i just smiled and said "son he is the real deal"

@dargramps:

Good stuff - Train 'em young, hook 'em early.

Posted by: BinM | June 8, 2010 8:47 PM | Report abuse

He goes until someone gets on base... Gets the W or nothing at all! TWELVE!!!!!

Posted by: mo_dc | June 8, 2010 8:49 PM | Report abuse

Why does FIOS show the Nationals game in the Guide for MLB but the Mets game is on? This is supposed to be a nationally televised game. Who is the bonehead who blacked out Northern Virginia when the game is sold out?

Posted by: tomd5 | June 8, 2010 8:49 PM | Report abuse

Freakin' ridiculous!

Posted by: CAskinhead | June 8, 2010 8:52 PM | Report abuse

man hows that for living up to expectations!

Posted by: nami322 | June 8, 2010 8:53 PM | Report abuse

Wow - What a great way to close a 1st MLB start! I didn't think he'd come back out for the 7th, but that was a 'killer' curtain-call.

Posted by: BinM | June 8, 2010 8:53 PM | Report abuse

tomd5 - the game is blacked out because MASN(2) has the local rights to the game. National everywhere else except DC area and Pittsburgh.

Posted by: ajr32 | June 8, 2010 8:54 PM | Report abuse

WOW!!! going NUTS on the stands!

What a night for SS! Welcome to DC!

What a finish for him. Let's hold 'em and give SS the curly W!

Posted by: mo_dc | June 8, 2010 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Strasburg struck out every Pirate batter at least once

Posted by: CAskinhead | June 8, 2010 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: TimDz | June 8, 2010 9:25 PM | Report abuse

Supposedly Walter Johnson was seen in the stands during the second inning.

Posted by: MKadyman | June 8, 2010 9:25 PM | Report abuse

What a night for DC baseball!

Posted by: CAskinhead | June 8, 2010 9:26 PM | Report abuse

two shaving cream pies PLUS one Elvis Wig!!!!

Posted by: TimDz | June 8, 2010 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Musings on the delivery of the second shaving cream pie:
* Scott Olsen had the demeanor of a serial killer.
* That is all.

Posted by: Ted_Striker | June 8, 2010 9:34 PM | Report abuse

What a good feeling! I hope the Nats made a lot of new fans tonight out of that crowd. And thank you, Bobby Carpenter, for slipping in the mention of the Big Train.

The new locomotive just arrived the station.

Posted by: nats24 | June 8, 2010 9:38 PM | Report abuse

That was sweet. Very sweet.

That's all I've got for tonight.

Posted by: baltova1 | June 8, 2010 9:54 PM | Report abuse

Walter Johnson has dead for more than 60 years, so he was not seen in the stands I would think. At least not that Walter Johnson.

Posted by: lornemyoung | June 8, 2010 9:54 PM | Report abuse

umm.... Wow.

Posted by: Naugatuck-Nats | June 8, 2010 10:08 PM | Report abuse

Now let's go out and start a winning streak so i can go to work and shut those smart azz Braves fan's the hell up, i guess Strasburg is scheduled to pitch again in Cleland(as Richard Pryor used to say) cannot wait to see him pitch again and did you check out his presser the kid is so professional and the command on his pitch's, man! This kid is something else and that is putting it mildly.GO NATS!!!

Posted by: dargregmag | June 8, 2010 10:09 PM | Report abuse

Merry Strasmas everyone!

Posted by: bromisky | June 8, 2010 10:09 PM | Report abuse

Somebody bearing a strange resemblance to WJ was on the mound tonight in a Washington uniform, lorenmyoung

Posted by: nats24 | June 8, 2010 10:15 PM | Report abuse

If he only does 50% of that, he's won 20. Totally ridiculous. I'll never be the same.

Posted by: Brue | June 8, 2010 10:15 PM | Report abuse

Happy Mardi Stras everyone. It was a Phat Tuesday indeed.

Posted by: Section506 | June 8, 2010 10:18 PM | Report abuse

All time MLB record for a debut is 15 K's. Not bad, not bad . . .

And zero walks! Gotta love that!

I enjoyed the strikeout he got after falling behind 3-0. And, yeah, the last two on six straight pitches.

Baseball has been re-born in DC!

Posted by: ADCWonk | June 8, 2010 10:20 PM | Report abuse

just back from the game. wow, just wow. the place was going absolutely nuts after the top of the 7th. what a way to finish his first start. and kudos to the middle of the lineup for coming through for the kid. looked for a minute like he might not get the W. outstanding performance.

Posted by: DCguy7 | June 8, 2010 10:24 PM | Report abuse

Uh oh... Zim, Dunn, and Hammer all homering on the same night. If they all get locked in and we got the Strasmania going on with him pitching in every 5 days, we might start reeling off some wins at a nice clip here. I'm getting all steamed up.

One word: Phenom

Posted by: Imjustlikemusiq | June 8, 2010 10:29 PM | Report abuse

come to jayzus baby come to jayzus

Posted by: cabraman | June 8, 2010 10:31 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, okay. That was pretty impressive.

Awesome that they brought out the Silver Fox wig where the fans could see it, imo.

Would also be awesome if all those fans would come out when somebody not named SS was pitching.

Posted by: natsfan1a1 | June 8, 2010 10:34 PM | Report abuse

Btw, one other person mentioned it but Scott Olsen's face before he pie'd SS again was CLASSIC. The guy looked like a complete psychopath.

Posted by: Imjustlikemusiq | June 8, 2010 10:34 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, I liked how he first offers a dry towel for wipe-up purposes. Waits a beat. Then he goes in for the kill. That's cold. :-)

Posted by: natsfan1a1 | June 8, 2010 10:35 PM | Report abuse

I was there. And holy f-ing sh*t!

Posted by: Kev29 | June 8, 2010 10:36 PM | Report abuse

It was tacky to boo Milledge and Church, though.

Posted by: natsfan1a1 | June 8, 2010 10:38 PM | Report abuse

It's your nature to be kind, 1a1, but it was only tacky to boo Church

Posted by: nats24 | June 8, 2010 10:44 PM | Report abuse

It was tacky to boo Milledge and Church, though.

Posted by: natsfan1a1 | June 8, 2010 10:38 PM

Agreed. Churchy really helped us in '05. And you guys might not believe it, but Lastings is a pretty nice kid. Not a great ballplayer, but I hung out with him at an event and he's a good guy.

It was amatuer night at the Park - lot of morons. But it was a lot of fun.

Posted by: Kev29 | June 8, 2010 10:47 PM | Report abuse

A round of Special K for all assembled here!
(H-m-m-m, that's a natural. Is Wheaties the only cereal to put athletes on their box?)

Posted by: bertbkatz | June 8, 2010 11:28 PM | Report abuse

I was so in awe over Stras' performance. His confidence has the potential of becoming a contagious VIRUS. It certainly looked like it after Zim, Dunn, and J.Will gave us 3 runs. Stras' speed and control are fantastic.

Lastly, welcome back Pudge. We missed your bat.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | June 8, 2010 11:36 PM | Report abuse

and exhale! Welcome to the show kid

Posted by: lowcountry | June 8, 2010 11:48 PM | Report abuse

Remember last year when half of you said we shouldn't pay him a dime over 10 mil? That was pretty smart. Acta is a good manager too amirite?

Posted by: RickFelt | June 9, 2010 12:08 AM | Report abuse

Wow. Back from the park. Stayed to watch pies and the Silver Fox. What a fantastic game. Strausburg was all he was hyped to be, and I loved that the heart of the order came through for the kid. My kids were so enthused that we stood in line to by Jeezus Jerseys. Just a perfect night.
