Jack McGeary to have Tommy John surgery

Sorry to ruin your Strasmas with some bad news. Class A Hagerstown pitcher Jack McGeary will have Tommy John surgery, ending his season and ensuring he will not pitch again for the next 12 to 18 months.

McGeary, in a unique arrangement, attended Stanford while starting his major league career. As of spring training, McGeary needed to complete two quarters to finish his degree. This year, McGeary is 4-1 with a 4.62 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 39 innings pitched.

Nice Adam. May you find a lump of coal in your Strasmas stocking too.

Well, McGeary can now concentrate on his studies and we'll see how he is in a year or so.

Sigh. Well, it just shows to go you that you never know, with young pitchers, as in life.

Good story break by you, although sad news for McGeary. I remember when Matt Chico went down for his TJ, only Chico Harlan and a few others were even on the story... that was puzzling.

Uh oh, this is not good. I still think the McGeary signing and the creative approach by JimBow to make it happen was the best GM thing he did.

Hopefully Jack will be back -- ready to compete and will get some studying done in the meantime!

All the more reason for AJ Cole to sign. Also, nice pick of Kevin Keyes at pick #206. Potential Dunn replacement at 1b in a few years.

mo_dc is really damning JimBow with faint praise by calling McGeary his best work!

We should have made McGeary have this surgery when he first signed! If I were GM, I would have a policy of pre-emptive Tommy John surgeries for all pitchers signed in the draft. This is one of many reasons why I will never be a GM.

Sad news. I hope he recovers quickly and smoothly.
