User poll: Naming Stephen Strasburg's debut

strasmas.jpg

On Twitter last night, there seemed to be competing phrases tossed around to describe June 8, the night when Stephen Strasburg makes his major league debut at Nationals Park. This morning, Steinberg squashed any debate about what time from now until then will be called: Strassover. The night itself? I asked for suggestions, and below are the best. Let's settle it.

Now we're getting downright groupiesque, is it possible that we could let the kid come into town and pitch without getting completly over the damn top,he is one part of the puzzle that is going to require many pieces before it's all said and done, soooooooo can we all just calm down, please.

Posted by: dargregmag | June 1, 2010 12:33 PM | Report abuse

nope. can't calm down.

Posted by: bottomfeeders10 | June 1, 2010 12:43 PM | Report abuse

You left off the "Meh" option.

(But I do have my tickets!)

Posted by: tailwagger | June 1, 2010 12:58 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, I'm with dargregmag on this one. Not to dis his talents, but, geez, it's just one guy - a kid - who will start one out of five games.

I didn't vote in the poll, but here's one regarding my state as regards all the hype and speculation: exstrasted. :-)

I'm partial to Strasburgapalooza!

When you hold out to become the highest paid draft pick in the history of baseball, you waive the right to be, "just another puzzle piece".

Posted by: BillyBeane | June 1, 2010 1:11 PM | Report abuse

Geez no pressure. Let the kid pitch!

Posted by: martini0703 | June 1, 2010 1:12 PM | Report abuse

STRASMAS!

Strasburgeddon is good, but was already used for the Spring Training and Minor League debut, and it's a bit Winter 09-sounding anyway. Strasmas is fresh and the picture makes it. I got it tiled on my desktop now...

They call him "JEEZUS" so definitely STRASMAS.

Strastivus. F.T.W.

All of the poll choices are "so-so" in my opinion...how about "STRASFEST 2010" which can be followed by "HARPERFEST 2010" on draft night.

Posted by: markfd | June 1, 2010 1:33 PM | Report abuse

Strasmas.

But where were the Strasburg Advent calendars? Too late to produce as souvenirs?

Posted by: CapPeterson1 | June 1, 2010 1:33 PM | Report abuse

Stras-O-Matic in honor of the old baseball board game we played as kids!

Posted by: HistoryBoy | June 1, 2010 1:41 PM | Report abuse

is it possible that we could let the kid come into town and pitch without getting completly over the damn top....

Ummm, no.

I spent far too much time over the past couple of years watching people like Daniel Cabrera, Levale Speigner and Jason Simontacchi pitch for this team. If you give me a chance to get as giddy as a Jason Bieber fan over a guy who's called the best pitching prospect since Roger Clemens/Doc Gooden/Tom Seaver/Walter Johnson/the guy who invented baseball, I'm all in.

Top off that cup with the Strasbug Kool-Aid, please...

Strasapalooza?

Here's a nickname for him: The Mayor (of Strasburg). So this first game will be his Strasburgnauguration.

Game 58 or, Game 1 of the Series against the Pirates.

NatsTown: Now nothing but an insignificant suburb of Strasburg. And we don't mean Strasburg VA off I-81, either. Don't be fooled by that exit sign.

The next question should be, which local eatery will debut their new "Strasburger" first? And what will it have on it (besides lots of the green stuff, of course)?

Posted by: erocks33 | June 1, 2010 2:27 PM | Report abuse

You left off the "None, They're all Lame" option.

Posted by: richs91 | June 1, 2010 2:29 PM | Report abuse

Straszilla!

Posted by: richs91 | June 1, 2010 2:31 PM | Report abuse

a little rhyme, in honor of the impending debut:

Gonna sink em like an iceberg,
Maybe A BryceBurg

A 1-2 punch, I gotta hunch
But no free lunch,
Ya gotta pay Boras
For the Steve Stras
And then the Bryce man
To fit the Lerner plan

But that’s ok man
When the Hamma smackem
And the Z-man yakem
And the Dunnkey jack em
Ya get the butts to pack em
maybe some Dibbs wise crackin

About a W, of the curly kind
meeting of the Stan and Rizz minds
about the new number one and two
the slayer middle of the Nats groove
throw a sign and watch the bats move
cuttin only air, tryin to prove
but it’s too bad because they gonna lose.

Posted by: DCguy7 | June 1, 2010 2:36 PM | Report abuse

Perfect! This has my vote. (Oh, and BTW, did anyone notice that the Nats won 14-4 yesterday?)

So if this is Strassover, then when does the Counting of the Homers begin?

Posted by: Sec3mysofa | June 1, 2010 2:51 PM | Report abuse

And for every Clemens there's a Clyde. Lets just see about how it plays out. Jeez better get there early cause he's outta there by the 6th. Anyway, a little dose of wait and see will be good. I can name a few rookie and second year pitchers that are just as impressive and they're doing it against major league hitting.

Posted by: bendersx6 | June 1, 2010 2:51 PM | Report abuse

I thought Clyde was paired with Keith Hernandez...

Posted by: Sec3mysofa | June 1, 2010 2:54 PM | Report abuse

Strassover - - would that make Atilano (or maybe Stammen) a paschal sacrifice?

Posted by: lowcountry | June 1, 2010 2:55 PM | Report abuse

Bwhahahaha!

It would be tonight, but they seemed to have started early in Houston.

Sheesh. This is as bad as if the Wash Post and it’s precious readership had to come up with a name to describe the big February snow storms. Oh wait ---

Posted by: gonatsgo1 | June 1, 2010 3:02 PM | Report abuse

I want to change my vote. Can June 4 be Strastivus? As a (now) ticket holder for June 4, I definitely am ready for the "Airing of the Grievances" ;)

Strasnaguration isn't too bad either, considering he'll be sworn in as the incumbent ace of the staff.

Posted by: Highway295Revisited | June 1, 2010 3:04 PM | Report abuse

The sad part is, it's pretty much the same list.

Strasmas and Strassover are too Judeo-Christian. Muslim Nats fans would feel left out. (And they do exist - there is a NatPack member named Mustafa.) Not to mention Wiccan, pagan, atheist/agnostic, Buddhist and Rastafarian Nats fans. So the name needs to be secular, if only to avoid lawsuits and fatwahs. That leaves only one choice: A Strastivus for the rest of us. Goodness knows we've had the airing of grievances already. Enough of that. Time for the feats of strength!

Posted by: nunof1 | June 1, 2010 3:13 PM | Report abuse

Strasboogie Nights?

Posted by: Sec3mysofa | June 1, 2010 3:14 PM | Report abuse

I find this logic compelling, but "Strastivus for the Last of Us!"
although "Strastivus for the Lost of Us" would fit in with the Strasover theme ...

I'm with dargregmag. Let's all take a deep breath and let the kid play.

What happens if he's not the best in the NL? Ubaldo Jiminez is setting the bar pretty high.

Of course, "Strastivus" spits in the face of all of us (there are at least three) who reject the cultural hegemony of Seinfeld. I, for one, would be highly insulted. Indeed, I am calling my barrister-iman as I speak . . .
