Game 103 discussion thread: Nationals vs. Phillies

It's easy to forget with everything going on, but, yeah, there will be a game tonight. And it's a pretty meaningful one across the baseball spectrum -- Roy Oswalt will start his first game for the Phillies. As he was announced, a huge cheer rose from the crowd. Phillies fans, it seems, have overtaken Nationals Park again.

The Nationals roughed up Oswalt in their lone meeting against him this year. In Houston, the Nats scored four earned runs against him in just 2 1/3 innings, at which point he was ejected. They'll counter Oswalt with Craig Stammen. In one of his two starts against the Phillies this season, he lasted only four outs. That was way back in early April, though.

Adam Dunn is still here. Miss Iowa has thrown out the first pitch to Miguel Batista. The weather is lovely. Talk about the game right here.

Also, there's a fresh post with members of the bullpen talking about the loss of Matt Capps up below.

Nyjer was missing in action for three months but he seems to have found his way back. Good start.

Way to start us off, Nyjer and Craig. Got our fans right into it, could hear it right from the crack of the triple

Miss Iowa is more lovely than the weather. Just wanted to say that....

Posted by: CajunD | July 30, 2010 7:25 PM | Report abuse

Wow. Nats on fire so far.

Posted by: marathoner | July 30, 2010 7:35 PM | Report abuse

It has been over-typed here, but Miss Connors is very lovely. And looks to be having a nice time this evening.

Oh and I'm LOVING this game!!!! What was Ruiz doing?!

Posted by: Kev29 | July 30, 2010 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Who's on third??

Posted by: marathoner | July 30, 2010 7:42 PM | Report abuse

I already told you, Who's on first

Posted by: Kev29 | July 30, 2010 7:43 PM | Report abuse

And a "D'oh" moment from the Phillies scores another run. Sweet.

Posted by: BinM | July 30, 2010 7:44 PM | Report abuse

Dunn showing bunt, love it

Posted by: Kev29 | July 30, 2010 7:45 PM | Report abuse

And I'm not here was playing third...

Posted by: BinM | July 30, 2010 7:46 PM | Report abuse

Manuel actually started Werth in CF tonight; HA - HA!

Gotta hate that leadoff walk to the 7 hitter, but nice job by Stammen to leave him on base. Maybe he's coming around.

Interesting thing, if it seems like the Nats have been having trouble scoring runs without Morse in the lineup of late, that's because he's been more than pulling his weight. He has 12 RBIs in 38 Abs in July. Compare that to most nights 5,6 and 7 hitters: Wllingham 6 RBI/70 ABs, Bernadina 4 RBIs/51 ABs and Rodriguez 5 RBIs/67 ABs. Even Nyger, hitting leadoff, has 8 RBIs in 88 ABs, better than 5-7 in the lineup. Desmond has 10 in 67 mostly from the 2 or 8 slot. Dunn has driven in 17 this month. Maybe Hammer is the one they should be trading; he seems prone to monster periods of low production followed by brief periods of massive production. Tough to build a great team around a streaky hitter - I seem to remember a month at the end of last season where he couldn't have gotten a hit in a slo-pitch game.

For the Harris haters, 2 RBIs in 31 ABs. It's no wonder people groan when Harris starts and Morse sits.

Adam Kennedy with three good at bats tonight. Maybe the pressure if off with Guzman gone.

Looked like there might be another Dunn collision at home but not quite.

Posted by: marathoner | July 30, 2010 8:30 PM | Report abuse

2nd HBP of the night by Oswalt; Did he get a warning? NO! I call BS on that, but Willingham just crushed one down the line for a triple, scoring two. The Nationals OWN Oswalt.

Posted by: BinM | July 30, 2010 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Any words for the plate umpire tonight, Roy?

Posted by: Kev29 | July 30, 2010 8:32 PM | Report abuse

Stammen through 6IP - 78PT,(49/29),3H,0R. Looks like he's on his game tonight so let him start the 7th, but get the bullpen ready, just in case.

Posted by: BinM | July 30, 2010 8:44 PM | Report abuse

Nyjer put a blemish on his truly perfect triple, walk, hbp, 2 runs line. Ah well, still a pretty good night even with the pick-off and fly out. Riggs needs to make him do Willie Mays Hayes push-ups every time he hits the ball in the air.

Posted by: Kev29 | July 30, 2010 8:45 PM | Report abuse

Looks like Stammen has reached his limit. Gotta get the ball down.

Posted by: Natmeister | July 30, 2010 8:50 PM | Report abuse

They're pounding Stammen now..Time to go to the pen.

Posted by: martynchase | July 30, 2010 8:51 PM | Report abuse

Yep, another pitch up and a near miss. Bullpen time.

Posted by: Natmeister | July 30, 2010 8:53 PM | Report abuse

And who comes in from the 'pen with a man on base?- Clippard. Unless he gets nuked, at least he can't blow the save.

Posted by: BinM | July 30, 2010 8:56 PM | Report abuse

Clip back for the 8th? And Storen for the 9th?

Posted by: marathoner | July 30, 2010 9:00 PM | Report abuse

Atta boy Clipp!

Posted by: Kev29 | July 30, 2010 9:02 PM | Report abuse

Gotta give some love to (on-the-field) AK, going 3 fer 4 so far. Table-setting nicely.

Posted by: NatAlbert | July 30, 2010 9:05 PM | Report abuse

Please keep feeding Ryan Zimmerman that pitch, Philths

Posted by: Kev29 | July 30, 2010 9:05 PM | Report abuse

Wow, I went from swearing to "what the..." to breathing a somewhat incredulous sigh of relief on that ball four.

BERNIE!!!!!!

Posted by: NatAlbert | July 30, 2010 9:10 PM | Report abuse

Gotta love it. Keeping those Phils fan quiet.

Posted by: marathoner | July 30, 2010 9:11 PM | Report abuse

Well it looks like with Guzman gone Kennedy has pulled his head out and starting breathing air again.

Posted by: Natmeister | July 30, 2010 9:15 PM | Report abuse

Nice work, O goggled one!

Posted by: NatAlbert | July 30, 2010 9:24 PM | Report abuse

4 for 5 now. Excellent night for Kennedy!

Posted by: NatAlbert | July 30, 2010 9:28 PM | Report abuse

I guess Storen not needed anymore. Balester in the pen.

I think AK has to get the wig tonight with Stammen a close second. (Hope I'm not speaking too soon.)

Posted by: marathoner | July 30, 2010 9:29 PM | Report abuse

Go Collin!!

=1/2St

Posted by: kevincostello | July 30, 2010 9:34 PM | Report abuse

This 9th inning is great with a Bushmills in the rocks. The Philly fans in the park look like they all just downed a big poop hoagie.

Posted by: Kev29 | July 30, 2010 9:36 PM | Report abuse

Very nice work, great win, Nats!

(Also kind of surprising to see a 2 on the Philthies line under the E column and a tasty 0 on ours!)

Posted by: NatAlbert | July 30, 2010 9:40 PM | Report abuse

Attention Phillies Fans: Your vomitorium is now open. Please proceed to the Half Street gutter and deposit your spew.

Great job by Balester. Love these plug ugly relievers who can bring the heat.

I walked into the office this morning whistling the tomahawk chop and got a nasty stare from the director and i said "good morning to you too"! I then told the Braves fan's we dislike Philly more and that we would take care of them this weekend to give them some breathing room, and then i said "of course you've got to beat the Red's" just happy that we are beating the Phils(don't like their fan's at all) and the fact that we can make the trip from Philly miserable by beating their azz makes my friday night perfect.

Loved to see Teddy stopping to bring flowers to Miss Iowa.

For first time in awhile I go to bed a happy Nats fan.

Instead of Clip and Save is it now Clip and Store?

Posted by: SCNatsFan | July 30, 2010 9:56 PM | Report abuse

And Yanks get Kearns. Good for AK.

Posted by: SCNatsFan | July 30, 2010 9:58 PM | Report abuse

Hey that aforementioned Reds-Braves game is a good one (MLB Network)

Posted by: Kev29 | July 30, 2010 9:59 PM | Report abuse

Awww, wook at aw dose disappointed Phiwwy fans wawking out.

Makes me giddy! Hee hee!

Posted by: NatAlbert | July 30, 2010 9:59 PM | Report abuse

Indeed Kev, I'd been keeping tabs during the breaks. Watching in full now, go Reds! (disclosure: I have the Reds beating the Bravos in this eve's installment of MLB.com's survivor challenge)

Posted by: NatAlbert | July 30, 2010 10:03 PM | Report abuse

I'm torn - really like the Reds (went to school in Cincy, cheered for them pre-Nats). But I hate the Phillies so much that I want the Braves to pull away. Oh well, just settling for good ball. Happy to see the game's oldest club back in contention.

Posted by: Kev29 | July 30, 2010 10:17 PM | Report abuse

Yes Red/Braves is a very good game did you see that catch to rob Brooks Conrad of a homerun? definitley top 10 play for espn.

Posted by: dargregmag | July 30, 2010 10:20 PM | Report abuse

Loved (absolutely loved) the Nats spoiling the Philthies showcasing of their latest gaudy acquisition. Eat that with your steak and cheese whiz.

Posted by: mastroj | July 30, 2010 10:28 PM | Report abuse

Forget about extending Dunn, let's extend Miss Iowa for the weekend -- our new babelicious good luck charm.

Posted by: Natmeister | July 30, 2010 10:30 PM | Report abuse

Austin Kearns now a Yankee?!?!?

Posted by: 1stBaseCoach | July 30, 2010 10:56 PM | Report abuse

They're now showing Capps on MLB, trying to save a 5-3 game vs. Seattle.

Posted by: NatAlbert | July 30, 2010 11:04 PM | Report abuse

Well done, Matt Capps

Posted by: Kev29 | July 30, 2010 11:10 PM | Report abuse

Good for you, Matt Capps!!!

Posted by: susandea | July 31, 2010 9:18 AM | Report abuse

Oh, and while we were pounding Oswalt, JA Happ thrown 6 innings of 2 hit shutout ball for Houston.
If Happ turns out to be able to build on that 12 - 4 rookie season, the Phillies will have really gotten the short end of that trade.
Between 2009 and 2010 Happ has put up better stats across the board than Oswalt, he's 5 years younger, he makes a ton less money, he's under club control for four more years.

Hey Gang-lots to digest, huh? Missed the game-work-but woulda been nice to be there....sort of a "make-up" for my opening day experience. On another note, I just read over on Insider that someone's planning on $5 seats fer tonight. Still can't post there (!!!) but if you can, let folks know that just now, driving on Southeast/West freeway-there's a line at the S. Cap exit heading to the park. LOTS of Pa. plates. So....I'm working tonight as well but-represent, Gangsters!
Go Nats!!!

I cannot believe it! Rizzo has recalled Lannan who will pitch against the Phils Sunday. Give some deserving pitcher or field player the opportunity. Lannan just does not have it anymore, presuming he ever did!

Nice Curly W Nats!!! Way to play error free ball! I luvd it when Oswalt was thrown out at first by Bernadina!!! Nice D guys!
