Ian Desmond, Adam Kennedy, Cristian Guzman will rotate in Nationals infield
Nationals Manager Jim Riggleman plans to give Ian Desmond the day off tomorrow, which is in line with his design for the Nationals' middle infield in the second half. Riggleman wants to create a truer three-man rotation between Desmond, Cristian Guzman and Adam Kennedy.
Riggleman said he'll decide who plays "on a day-to-day basis" and that pitching matchups will determine some of the playing-time decisions. Ultimately, though, he hopes to give Desmond 500 total at-bats in his rookie season while also getting Guzman and Kennedy regular playing time and not neglecting Alberto Gonzalez, who roped a double Friday night.
"Routinely, I'd like to just keep all three involved," Riggleman said. "It's impossible to keep all four of them active. It's hard to keep three of them active. But I felt like we played better baseball when we did that."
Here's a quick look at how much each has played and what they've done, with average/on-base/slugging in the slashes:
Guzman: 78 starts, 313 PA, .294/.342/.367, 1 HR
Desmond: 72 starts, 298 PA, .255/.296/.393, 6 HR
Kennedy: 45 starts, 203 PA, .242/.317/.326, 2 HR
