Pat Listach would have interest in Chicago Cubs manager's job
While Nationals third base coach Pat Listach will be up against a handful of difficult candidates to compete with, he said today he has interest in the Chicago Cubs manager position, which Lou Piniella will leave vacant after the season.
"I don't know anybody on the planet who wouldn't be," Listach said. "To be considered, with the names that they're talking about for that job, would be an honor by itself."
The Cubs are likely to look at multiple high-profile candidates, including Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg, currently a manager in the Cubs' minor league system. They could also interview several experienced managers currently out of work, such as Bobby Valentine.
Listach could be considered because of his ties to the Cubs. He managed in the Cubs' minor league system for three seasons, two years at Class AA and three years with Class AAA Iowa. He has yet to be contacted and assumes if he is, it won't be until after the season.
"I don't think I should," Listach said. "I don't expect anything to happen until the season's over. That's the proper way to do it."
Listach still keeps in touch with former members of his staff from his managing job in the Cubs' minor league system. He admires Cubs owner Tom Ricketts and cherished his time in Chicago's organization.
"It was great," Listach said. "Great organization, great people. A lot of it has to do with the aura of the Cubs. Everybody loves them. Everybody wants them to win."
In his two seasons coaching third base and infield for the Nationals, Listach feels his experience has made him better suited to manage in the majors. Manager Jim Riggleman has often vouched for Listach as a potential manager.
"I'm learning every day," Listach said. "When [Riggleman] does things, I know why he does it. But he'll explain it to us anyway."
