Ryan Zimmerman, Michael Young team up on All-Star Game final vote

In trying to win the final vote to make the All-Star Game, Ryan Zimmerman will use some outside help. The Texas Rangers and Washington Nationals teamed up and encouraged fans who vote for Michael Young in the American League to vote for Zimmerman in the National League and vice-versa. They're calling it "Third Base Ticket." They could also call it the "Bob Short Moved the Senators to a Dallas Suburb Four Decades Ago Ticket" but that doesn't quite have the same ring.

This afternoon, Zimmerman taped a message that will play on the video board at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. A video of Young will air at Nationals Park.

Zimmerman still trails Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto, who also enlisted help. The Reds joined the Red Sox to promote Votto and Kevin Youkilis, a native of Cincinnati. It worked for them - both Votto and Youkilis are leading their leagues.

I was gonna say Votto deserved it, but after Zim's two home runs, including the walk off, you get to thinking, he's not so far behind...at a tougher position...where he's the best fielder in the league...it's close enough that I'm gonna go with the hometown guy.

By the way, it's easy to forget just how good a fielder is. I went to the Stras game, and not only did Zim make three excellent plays, but Wright (one of the better fielders in the league) missed two non-error plays that Zim would have gotten. I know this because I'm conditioned to see those hits as outs with Zimmerman. The mark of a great fielder isn't just the plays that amaze you, but the plays that you expect to be made. We get annoyed at Zim when he gets a few throwing errors once in a while, but there's so many plays in between we take for granted that other teams just don't get from their third basemen.

We Nats fans witih a place in the heart for the Young family should vote the AL ballot for Dmitri's brother Delmon rather than Michael. My regrets go out to the bankrupt Bob Short-George Bush team in the Dallas suburb.
