Game 121 discussion thread: Nationals at Braves

The Nationals will try to avoid a sweep, having already not won a road series for the 15th consecutive try. Their road record is 20-42, third-worst in the majors and, by winning percentage, nearly identical to their road record last year. National League fans, come out to see the Nationals. Your team is probably going to win.

Since May 15, the Nationals are 31-54. They have been the third-worst team in the league for half the season. They'll try again today with John Lannan, who's performed well since he returned from his Class AA exile. In three starts this month, Lannan has allowed six earned runs in 18 innings, going five, six and seven innings, in that order.

It is disgustingly hot and humid today in Atlanta, and so endurance will be a key factor for both Lannan and Braves starter Derek Lowe. From your hopefully air-conditioned surroundings, talk about the game right here.

Sure have missed Nyjer. Bad news about the Hammer, but take care and be READY for next year.

somewhat following the game on gameday....how is Ramos doing? (besides 0 - 2)

We've been down this road many times before...let's see how mentally tough we are today...

Posted by: pentagon40 | August 19, 2010 2:22 PM | Report abuse

Ramos 0 for 2 but worked Lowe to 9-pitch counts both times.

Johnny Boy gets out of the 5th. Gonzalez in scoring position after running on Nyjer's arm, but no harm done.

"how is Ramos doing?"

Seems to be calling a good game...

Posted by: reddog278 | August 19, 2010 2:29 PM | Report abuse

Batters 1 through 5 (minus Hammer and Dunn)... 6 for 13, 4 RBI, 4 Runs and a steal. Nice.

Posted by: Kev29 | August 19, 2010 2:41 PM | Report abuse

Both hits the pitches have been UP...Gotta keep the pitches down...

Posted by: pentagon40 | August 19, 2010 2:45 PM | Report abuse

Time to pull Lannan. He is great for 5 innings then he falls apart.

Posted by: lj1126 | August 19, 2010 2:51 PM | Report abuse

Get Lannan outta there. He's done!

Posted by: mo7290 | August 19, 2010 2:54 PM | Report abuse

When Lannan gave up the first hit, the manager or pitching coach should have gone out there and said to him, "You're not coming out..give up 5 runs and you're still not coming out...stop them now!!!!!".....

I have posted before about a mentality being established among the starters come the 5th or beginning of the 6th inning...sometimes getting shelled gets a pitchers' attention...if the reliever gets shelled then the starter feels a sense of relief....

We got a break this time with the DP...dumb runner on a FOUL BALL.....

Is there an FM station in the DC area that carries the Nats radio feed?

Posted by: mo7290 | August 19, 2010 3:00 PM

Not really (anymore). Apparently the closest is 104.3 FM out of Leesburg. Unless you have HD radio.

Checked the WP today..Nats are carried on AM stations only..don't understand why NO FM station carries the team...We can hear the Orioles locally on FM though...sad.....

"It is disgustingly hot and humid today in Atlanta" ??? Simple ignorance or intentional lie from a WaPo writer? Atlanta's weather is almost infinitely better than D.C.'s at a thousand feet above sea-level, and none is a better judge of that fact than this born and raised Washingtonian and long-term, thankfully, adopted Atlantan...living large in the best city in America, hence, in the world. Get your act together D.C.. Hang Bush and Cheney...and hey, the Nats are reminding me of my former "team," the Senators. Must be the water or the evil spirit on your town.

Posted by: iamerican | August 19, 2010 3:09 PM | Report abuse

Carpenter keeps saying Ramos is looking for his first major league hit, the last time I checked Minnesota was a major league team and he got 4 hits in his first game. Glad we know everything about our new player.

The first few seasons, they were on 107.7 - but I think with the station ownership shuffle and maybe the Nats poor radio ratings they decided to keep WTOP on that frequency (?).

I think the Nats should re-work their radio deal this Winter. Maybe 980 or 106.7 will be interested.

Just checking on Wang..see he had surgery July 09...and is in rehab in Viera now...why did we sign a guy out with a shoulder injury in the first place?????? Know it was only for a year but we could have waited until he mended to make him an offer...13 months now and he is still AT LEAST a month away from playing...

Posted by: pentagon40 | August 19, 2010 3:21 PM | Report abuse

Kev: More likely 106.7 - Red Zebra is already in bed with the O's.

Last batter has 3 homers this season...MAKE HIM HIT THE BALL...don't walk him!!!!!

Clippard walks a guy and Riggleman is out to talk to him...why didn't he go out there when Lannan got into trouble??? Puzzling to me....Our starters need encouragement also..

Burnett has pitched a good bit the last couple of days, Storen not much. Gotta keep 'em fresh. Riggleman motto #1.

Posted by: FeelWood | August 19, 2010 4:06 PM | Report abuse

Nice effort from Lannan who kept the team in the game and some timely hits with RISP. It would have been nice to have won 2 of 3, but the Nats played pretty well the last two games even without Willingham in the lineup. It was interesting to see how the Braves intentionally walked Zimmerman to get to Morse with no Dunn in the on deck circle. I shudder to think about next season if Dunn doesn't re-sign!

Well needless to say my co-workers here in the A-T-L are a little miffed at this afternoon's results and i'm like What? you won 2/3 what's the problem? never satisfied and then i said we're going up to Philly and try and help you guy's pad your lead(OhoooTay!) anyway just a quick note to mo_dc: i am a died in the wool DC'er there's no place like DC i've been here for four and a half years it's ok but not DC our older daughters live here along with three grandchildren and of course our baby girl whose headed to NY for her first year of college. Great win today, Go Nats!!!!!!.

Pretty much vintage Lannan: 5-6 IP, 6-7 hits, 95-100 pitches and 2-3 runs. Actually that's good for a #4 or #5 starter. The 5 K's helped but seems like he starts to falter the third time through the order. Probably due to his high pitch count and he gets the ball up. Hope he can stay on this course and start getting to the 7th. Seems like we had a lot of energy, give some credit to Nyjer and his recovered mojo. Nice to see the other team stumble and bumble -- what was Diz thinking on the popoup DP? Willie got some redemption also, he has surprising power when he gets the fastball. I'm sure he will be seeing the usual steady diet of curves after this jack. Better savor this one with Marquis starting tomorrow.

Forgot to add, Lannan is the stopper, now winning three starts in a row and breaking losing streaks. It's too bad he got mislabled as the ace and too much was expected of him. He will never dazzle but as long as the sinker stays down and the infield plays decent he can be a steady performer.

Posted by: Natmeister | August 19, 2010 4:53 PM | Report abuse

D.C. is the biggest hicktown in America, with all the ambitious hicks working "up stream" to come and get the Federal dollar going along with the vested corruption any native of the area, with any brains, easily recognizes...buffer caste for fascist plutocracy..."bi-partisan" fakery. Yeah, right, Bush and Cheney, with five generations of connections to Hitler-financing Rockefeller, sure didn't commit 9/11...har-de-har-har. A Jury said the CIA killed Kennedy, sending us to die in Roman Catholic Vietnam (Hunt v. Marchetti)...but nothing stops the check, right? D.C. isn't even American. If it were Bush and Cheney would be hanging at the Navy Yard.

How complimentary. With his Purple Heart, with Oak Leaf cluster, I'll bet his Bronze Star has a V on it. Pretty impressive, particularly as an EM, either way. Jackals and traitors and particularly Gay Old Pervert party partisans say otherwise but G-d is not mocked.

...and thousands of Congressmen and staffers witnessed the "white jumbo jet's lumbering turn directly overhead," on its over-run from the Columbia Pike/David Copperfield approach path as the report from the Pentagon arrived. And all the security and VaDOT tapes of the most secure area in America disappeared...and a drug-addled, Roman Catholic Speaker from a known Mafia-front political family of Baltimore went along. They're "in it together." ...with not a trace of a Boeing 757 on the pristine lawn of the Pentagon...and a sixteen foot hole through the three outer rings but no wings or titanium, numbered landing gear. Col. George Nelson, the AF's former top crash analysis officer, did a full survey. It's obviously treason...but enjoy your dinner, vacation and retirement plans as America circles the drain. Death for Treason. Misprision of Treason also "counts."
