Jason Marquis to start Friday, Nationals set rotation

Manager Jim Riggleman committed to Jason Marquis making his next start as scheduled, and he'll pitch Friday at Philadelphia. Stephen Strasburg will follow on Saturday, his first start at Citizens Bank Park, and Scott Olsen, barring anything surprising tonight, will start Sunday.

So, the next week of pitching matchups, after tonight, sets up like so:

Wednesday: Livan Hernandez vs. Tim Hudson
Thursday: John Lannan vs. Derek Lowe
Friday: Jason Marquis vs. Roy Halladay*
Saturday: Stephen Strasburg vs. Kyle Kendrick
Sunday: Scott Olsen vs. Roy Oswalt

*Excellent potential for a Reverse Lock.

Soon, the Nationals will implement Jordan Zimmermann into their rotation. He will start for Class AAA Syracuse on Saturday, and if all goes well he will bid farewell to the minor leagues. So, Zimmermann's first major league start this year could come as soon as Aug. 26 against the Cubs at Nationals Park.

The Nationals, though, may decide to wait until September to unveil Zimmermann. If they wait an extra trip through the rotation, the Nationals can add Zimmermann without sending down a pitcher. "It's still being discussed," Riggleman said.

Sorry Adam but the August 26th game on Thursday is against the Cardinals

Nothing against Marquis personally, but that's about as good as conceding Friday's game to the Phils.

The Nats should double down on the reverse lock and start the bench--put Willie Harris, Will Nieves, and Kevin Mench in the lineup and see what happens. If you're probably going to lose, you may as well lose ugly.

I think that starting the bench has actually worked out well for them a couple of times this season . . . maybe when the opposing pitcher sees the Will(ies) in the lineup, they mentally check out and leave a fat pitches few hanging . . .

Smart to start Marquis against Halladay rather than wasting one of our real pitchers, like we did when we let Livo face Ubaldo Jiminez. That was just giving away a win. This is letting a loss be a loss.

Will be nice to see J-Zimm back on the mound.

Good luck to Marquis in coming back from his injury.

Great. Better start warming up the bullpen in the first inning.
