Nationals close to signing A.J. Cole

Fourth round selection A.J. Cole, a high school pitcher from Florida with a high-90s fastballs and first-round talent, is close finalizing an agreement with the Nationals, Cole said this morning in a telephone conversation.

Cole said that "nothing is for sure yet," and that his agent and the Nationals are polishing off the details of his contract. But he also sounded as if the negotiations have reached the point of formality.

"It's really exciting," Cole said. "I'm just basically starting my life now. I think we're basically right there. They're just finishing up the little things."

Cole, 18, likely would have been picked in the first round if not for his strong commitment to the University of Miami. He recently finished his senior season at Ovideo
High School.

Here's some video of Cole in action:

I'll be the first to admit you got me Sec3. Funny.

6'5" - 190lbs @ 18 years old. This kid's gonna be a beast when finishes growing and hits maturity. I thought this was a wasted pick when it was made. Very glad it seems to be working out.

Update from Baseball America's Jim Callis:

"Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo called me Sunday morning and emphatically denied any agreements were in place at this time. Bill Ladson of has reported that he has confirmed Cole's deal with a baseball source."

Harper, Solis and Cole would be like Christmas in August

I wonder how concerned the Nats are about signing Solis. All the experts are saying 2011's draft will be much deeper in all regards than the 2010 draft(except at the #1 pick obviously), therefore pick 1A in round 2 next year might be more valuable than Solis.

Just a thought, I wonder what Riz is thinking.

I read another report that Solis is signed.
