Reliever Bisenius opts for free agency

By Dave Sheinin

Right-handed pitcher Joe Bisenius just became a strong candidate for Most Random National. The 28-year-old reliever, who was a somewhat surprising September call-up by the Nationals in 2010, was placed on outright waivers and opted for free agency over a minor-league assignment with the Nationals.

Bisenius, whom the Nationals signed to a minor-league contract in May, made just five appearances in the majors in September, giving up six hits, six walks and five earned runs in 4 2/3 innings, for an ERA of 9.64. It was his second stint in the majors, following the two appearances he made for the Phillies in 2007.

He does, however, possess a fastball that gets as high as 97 mph, and in this post Adam Kilgore called him perhaps "the most intriguing player to watch over the Nationals' final 20 games." Well, maybe not.

So when do the 60 day DL players start counting toward the 40 man roster again?

@natbiscuits

The six guys who were on the 60-Day DL are all on the 40-Man Roster. They came off the DL this week.

The Nats 40-Man Roster currently sits at 38 players.

To 'flesh out' the roster to date...
Fourteen field players (4CA [Flores, Nieves, Ramos, Pudge], 4IF [Desmond, Espinosa, AGonz, RZim], 6OF [Bernadina, Harper, Maxwell, Morgan, Morse, Willingham]).
Twenty-four pitchers (15SP [Atilano, Chico, Detwiler, Jaime, Lannan, Livo, Marquis, Martin, Martis, Maya, Mock, Strasburg, Thompson, Wang, JZimm], 9RP [Balester, Burnett, Clippard, Mattheus, Peralta, Severino, Slaten, Stammen, Storen]).

The team really needs to pick up a bat or two, and shed some of the excess SP's, imo.

Why is Nieves still on the 40 man roster? If we outright him, he can opt to go to AAA, where' he'd be fine in reserve. If he opts to not take the AAA assignment, he'd be easily replaced by any one of a the 6 year minor league free agents...
