Chico, Bisenius, Martis victims in first round of cuts

By Dave Sheinin

Perhaps it is a good sign of the Nationals' pitching depth that the first three players cut from the spring roster have all had varying levels of success in the big leagues. Lefty Matt Chico and right-handers Joe Bisenius and Shairon Martis were all re-assigned to minor-league camp.

All three had pitched for the Nationals in the majors within the past 24 months, but none of the three had much chance of making the big league team this spring, given the depth of the team's pitching.

"In trying to get guys ready who we realistically think are going to be on the club," Manager Jim Riggleman said, "we had to pare it down a little bit. [Pitching coach] Steve McCatty was doing his scheduling for the next 10 days and he's just not seeing any innings where he can commit to those guys."

In the case of Chico, who made one start in the majors in 2010, his spring training output for the Nationals consisted of exactly one inning against the Florida Marlins on Wednesday.

"Honestly, just seeing everybody in cam, I thought this was going to happen," Chico said. "I'm not oblivious. I want to be on the team but the numbers speak for themselves. There are some things that need to happen, and I need to go get innings, and if I'm going to be starting I need to get my innings up."

Just a reminder: Tom Gorzelanny and Chien-Ming Wang, candidates for the team's fifth-starter job, are both scheduled to pitch in a "camp" game against minor-leaguers at 10 a.m. on one of the back fields. I'll have an update later. And of course, Jason Marquis starts against the Braves at 1:05 p.m.

Here is the Nationals' lineup:

CF Nyjer Morgan
LF Roger Bernadina
RF Jayson Werth
3B Ryan Zimmerman
1B Adam LaRoche
C Wilson Ramos
2B Danny Espinosa
SS Alberto Gonzalez
P Jason Marquis

This line up may do well today. Let's just hope Morgan can get on base.

Thanks Dave:

good to see you here and pleased that we are getting so much information this spring

I remember being so excited about pulling a Martis autographed rookie card a few years ago - pretty sure that card is never going to amount to much

go Nats!!

It'll be interesting to see what Marquis does on the mound today. As a whole so far I've been pleasantly surprised with our pitching staff. I know it has only been 4 games but its still fun to speculate how different things could be this season. Listening to Zim on 106.7 this morning got me fired up for Openning day! Can't wait

I'll trade you my Matt Chico autographed ball for it.

FW - we really have a treasure trove don't we? Where does my Manny Acta autographed ball fit in this rotation? A real treasure for me is my Frank Robinson ball and I have not yet spent the energy on trying to get Riggleman but I guess I should just to keep the string going.
