Chien-Ming Wang throws a bullpen session, feeling 'better'

Chien-Ming Wang threw a bullpen session today without feeling any tightness in his shoulder, he said, his best progress since last week, when he had to cut short a start in a minor league intrasquad game.

The Nationals have yet to plan when Wang will pitch in his first major league spring game. Wang was to throw two innings in last week's minor league game, but he felt tightness in his surgically repaired shoulder after one inning and had to be shut down.

For the past week, Wang had just been playing catch and throwing long toss. The Nationals aren't yet sure of his next step. Most likely, he'll throw another bullpen session before getting into a game.

"I'm getting better," Wang said today in the Nationals' clubhouse, an ice bag wrapped around his shoulder.

Before Wang's setback, the Nationals had been encouraged by his progress and the movement on his pitches. The discomfort and ensuing delay have almost certainly eliminated any change of Wang beginning the season in the major leagues.
