Jayson Werth resting with 'general soreness'
Jayson Werth, whom the Nationals had planned on bringing with them to Jupiter, stayed behind in Viera after he told Manager Jim Riggleman his legs felt tight. Riggleman described Werth's ailment as "general soreness in his legs" associated with spring training and said Werth will probably play tomorrow in Viera.
"He mentioned a few days ago that he's tight, sore," Riggleman said. "I want to be real precautionary with him, let him get ready at his pace."
(If I didn't know any better, I might venture to guess that Werth is exercising some veteran privilege and saying, "no, thanks" to the nearly two-hour bus ride to Roger Dean Stadium.)
Also, to clarify from the previous post: Ryan Zimmerman's tweak is an abdominal issue, not an oblique issue. Either way, the point remains that it's something Zimmerman and the Nationals have zero worry about.
>>> Bryce Harper is with the Nationals again today, but his days in major league camp could be coming to a close. The Nationals will likely make their first significant round of position player cuts Saturday, and while Riggleman said Mike Rizzo has not discussed specific names with him, he seemed to suggest it's possible Harper will be among them.
"Whether or not he'd be in that first one or not, I don't know," Riggleman said.
>>> The Nats still aren't sure what comes next for Chien-Ming Wang. Yesterday, Wang threw 150 feet for several throws and "felt fine," Riggleman said. But there's still no plan in place for when he'll get back on a mound following his aborted start in a minor-league intrasquad game late last week.
In other pitching plans: Tom Gorzelanny remains a go to start tomorrow night in Kissimmee against the Astros. The idea is for him to throw two innings. Visa-delayed reliever Henry Rodriguez is throwing a bullpen session today and could get into a game within a week, while Elvin Ramirez could see time in a game "soon," Riggleman said, although there's nothing specific in place.
