Goodell Likely to Take Over Officially Around Sept. 1
NORTHBROOK, Ill.--The exact date on which Roger Goodell will succeed Paul Tagliabue as the NFL commissioner had not been determined as of this evening.
The league's 32 franchise owners elected Goodell, the NFL's chief operating officer, to succeed the retiring Tagliabue here today. Goodell said during an evening news conference that he and Tagliabue soon would discuss the issue of when Goodell officially will take over.
Goodell said he expected it to happen before the Sept. 7 beginning of the regular season. One league official said he expected Goodell to take office around Sept. 1.
