No Major Announcements From Goodell-Upshaw Meeting

Officials said there were no major developments to announce following today's meeting between NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Players Association chief Gene Upshaw.

Goodell and Upshaw met to discuss a variety of issues, including possible changes to the league's steroid-testing program.

Goodell said in recent weeks that he had opened discussions with Upshaw about the possibility of strengthening the program, possibly by increasing the frequency of tests and adding substances to the banned list. Upshaw said most recently he was open to the possibility of modifying the sport's drug policies if the league's medical advisers recommended it. Previously, he'd said he didn't think more tests were necessary and he thought the drug program should be changed only when scientific advancements in testing warranted it.

The two also were to discuss several topics related to the economics of the sport and the league's efforts to put a franchise in the Los Angeles market.

The league has a great relationship with the Players Union, right now. Both have benefited. I don't see why anyone would want to follow Bryant Gumbel's plan of the Union going after the owner's throats for more money and turning this into Millionaire vs. Millionaires like you have in baseball. This country loves football.
