T. Barber Fires Back

New York Giants tailback Tiki Barber went on the offensive this week against media members who criticized him for saying last week that he planned to retire after the season.

On the satellite radio show he hosts Tuesday nights on Sirius with his twin brother, Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Ronde Barber, Tiki Barber lashed out against New York Daily News columnist Gary Myers and ESPN analysts Tom Jackson and Michael Irvin.

"I will call them idiots because they have neither spoken to me nor any one of my teammates or any of my coaches," Barber said. "Yet all they do is criticize me for being a distraction with this retirement thing.

"And that includes Gary Myers. That includes Tom Jackson on ESPN. That includes the ultimate character guy--facetiously speaking, of course--Michael Irvin. Please get a clue on how to be a journalist. Don't make blanket assumptions about it. And obviously, as was evidenced [Monday] night, I am a huge distraction to the New York Giants."

Barber ran for 114 yards in the Giants' victory Monday night at Dallas.

Hilarious

The best not tangle with the Barbers

We're talking New York, right? By definition, isn't every team in every sport in the city consumed by some media created "distraction"? Everyone should remember that the "distraction" of Jerome Bettis retiring from the Steelers existed all the way into the Super Bowl...

And yes, Tiki could very well end up replacing any of those sports reporters who think he is a distraction!

all I have to say is, Michael who?

I'm no fan of the Giants, but anyone who knows football should repsect Tiki. He's a pretty classy guy and whatever he does after football, he'll be great at it. I think some of the ones dissing his choice are merely fearful that Tiki will outdo them in the booth.

Tiki is a great player and by all accounts is a good guy but perhaps he should have held his comments regarding retirement until the season was over. Mentioning it initially was bad enough but he has gone out of his way to talk about it over and over again. Enough already. We know you are smart and your head is screwed on straight. Just finish the season.

Why a clown like Irvin would even approach this issue shows how worthless the opinions of many if not all ex-athletes turned "reporters" are.

Irvin is an idiot. What's up w/ESPN? When did they leave sports journalism in the dumpster? SOME of the ex-jocks they hire can make a coherent statement, but the rest are just ear candy....for the uneducated and uninformed. What's next, ESPN wresting?

Tiki was not seeking to announce his retirement -- a NYT columnist said he was releasing the story and asked Tiki to comment.

Speaking as a Giants fan, I never had a concern with respect to Tiki discussing his plans during the season. I keep saying that it's just a shame because he has some great football left in him. I don't begrudge him his decision, or believe it's a distraction -- just a disappointment.

Basically, a lot of this is irresponsible sports journalism. Why skirt around the issue with outside sources and just ask the party in question whether s/he is going to retire?

None of this "Sources have said you're going to retire. Wanna comment?" crap.

Tiki Barber is a good football player. Thing is, why do we Washingtonians even give a fizz about what is going on in Da 212 when there's plenty of hizzle going on in da 202 (or Raljon, which is actually 301)?

Oh, yeah ... we should be talking about that other futbol since DC United is going to win a fifth MLS Cup this year.

I think this is a push for the giants to play better like a sense of urgence for them to go to shall i say a superbowl

Come on Tiki don't lower yourself, when you wrestle a pig you both get dirty -but the pig likes it . Moreover, they do sports - enough said.

Until the last few days I had a lot of respect for the guy... but, I just saw this weeks installment of HBO's Inside The NFL tonight and any respect I had left for the dude, was washed away. Barber clearly has used the team and media to simply advance the career of a driven zombie -- himself. All driven to be a..a..a..ANCHOR MAN? Not a sports anchor, but a NEWS ANCHOR? How shallow does it get? Quit now Tiki and take your sleaze-bag handler-manager with you.

Tiki would make a great announcer for pro football, and if ESPN ever institutes drug tests on their current announcer(s) there will be plenty of openings. See ya Michael.

I wish the Ultimate Character Guy would leave ESPN. I hate listening to him talk, his giant ego and tiny little brain make for an awful viewing experience. I just hate the guy. Speak English, please!

When sports programming was on "free air" the announcers couldn't get away with all the smarminess now personified by most of the "color" commentators. It's mostly annoying, not funny. I'll take radio play-by-play any day over the TV guys...

larryleone. I sure do ope that crystal ball of yours is correct in tiki taking irwin's job. He's why I limit my watching of espn's game day segment. Man that ould be just "spondoodious".
