Lions Assistant Cullen Fined, Suspended for One Game

The NFL suspended Detroit Lions defensive line coach Joe Cullen for one game and fined him $20,000 for conduct detrimental to the league.

Cullen was arrested twice during the preseason, once for drunk driving and once for driving nude. He admitted he had a drinking problem and has sought treatment, according to the Lions.

Cullen will not participate in the Lions' practices this week or Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears.

The Lions previously had suspended Cullen for their opening game of the regular season.

"The league had previously informed us of this possibility, so this was not unexpected," Lions Coach Rod Marinelli said in a written statement released by the team. "I do want to say that I am really proud how Joe has responded to his mistake. He has been getting treatment and has done a commendable job in dealing with his problem. He has definitely learned from this mistake and has moved forward in a very positive manner."

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell met with Cullen on Dec. 1.
