NFC East Living Up to Advance Billing... Sort Of

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.--Remember back when so many people thought the NFC East was going to be a powerhouse division this season?

They were right.

Sort of.

It hasn't been a smooth ride for any of the four NFC East teams this season. But, with two weeks left in the regular season, it's possible that three of four clubs will reach the playoffs, leaving only the Washington Redskins at home.

The Dallas Cowboys won in Atlanta on Saturday night and clinched a playoff spot with the results of Sunday's play. The Philadelphia Eagles lead the NFC's wild-card chase. And the New York Giants, even after losing to the Eagles here Sunday, are tied with the Falcons for the second wild-card spot with records of 7-7.

The Giants once were 6-2 but have lost five of six games since then. Still, they reminded themselves late Sunday that their season still has possibilities.

"I thought we could go far this season," tailback Tiki Barber said. "We're loaded with talent, especially on offense. But we're not utilizing it on Sundays. We're not getting it done. We're faltering. We're wasting talent in a lot of ways. But it's not too late. It's amazing we're still in this thing at 7-7.... That's the NFC this year."

Said middle linebacker Antonio Pierce: "We just need to get in the playoffs and play our game. The Steelers showed that last year."
