Owens Fined $35,000 For Spitting Incident Saturday
The NFL today fined Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens $35,000 for spitting at Atlanta Falcons cornerback DeAngelo Hall during the Cowboys' triumph Saturday night in Atlanta.
Owens was not suspended, keeping with precedent for punishments levied by the league for similar infractions in the past.
Hall complained to the officials on the field. But the officials hadn't seen what Owens had done and Owens was not penalized or ejected. Hall called for Owens to be suspended by the league.
Hall said that Owens spit in his face following a play on the Cowboys' opening drive of the game. Owens later acknowledged that he'd spit at Hall, telling the NFL Network during a postgame interview that Hall was bothering him with what he was saying and apologizing for what he'd done.
Owens had two touchdown catches against Hall in the Cowboys' 38-28 win. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones revealed after the game that Owens recently had decided not to undergo season-ending surgery for a tendon injury to his right ring finger, putting himself at risk for having restricted mobility in the finger permanently.
