Cowboys Announce Hiring of Garrett

The Dallas Cowboys hired Jason Garrett today, as expected.

What's yet to be determined is whether he'll be the team's head coach or its offensive coordinator.

The Cowboys plan to interview other candidates for the head coaching job. If owner Jerry Jones selects one of those candidates to succeed Bill Parcells as coach, Garrett would be the club's offensive coordinator. But Jones also is leaving open the possibility of naming Garrett, a former backup quarterback for the Cowboys who'd been the Miami Dolphins' quarterbacks coach the past two seasons, the head coach.

San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips is to interview Friday for the head coaching job. The Cowboys also have received permission to interview New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs and San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Norv Turner.
