First-Round Playoff Picks

Saturday Games

Chiefs at Colts
Yes, it's a bad matchup for the Colts. But the return of safety Bob Sanders should bolster their run defense a little bit. And they still have Peyton Manning.
Pick: Colts

Cowboys at Seahawks
Both teams enter the postseason playing poorly. The Cowboys at least are healthier.
Pick: Cowboys

Sunday Games

Jets at Patriots
Bill Belichick won't lose to former pupil Eric Mangini twice in one season.
Pick: Patriots

Giants at Eagles
The Eagles are playing better than anyone else in the NFC right now.
Pick: Eagles

Record
Last Week: 10-6
Season: 146-110

Mark,

I have a different take on Cowboys/Seahawks. Both teams are playing poorly. The primary difference is that Romo is just awful, and the Dallas defense is non-existent. I think Seahawks are an easy pick.

Colts are a good pick because KC doesn't have the defense to rattle Eli's big brother.

I pick the Jets in a little bit of an upset. Jets have emotion, Pats have Brady. The Pats need Brady to play at an all-star level to play this game. If he is only "really good", Pats lose.

Philly/Giants? I really want to pick Philly. But you never know. Giants on any given Sunday can be good. But I think two things work against them. Coughlin is a terrible playoff coach. But then... so is Reid. But the difference is.... Garcia has so much experience that he won't get too rattled. Eli, on the other hand, is playing pretty poorly at the moment. So I reluctantly pick the Eagles.

You're spot on , except for the 'boys. Seattle was a much hotter team going into the playoffs.

I'll take momentum and a veteran QB over a team on a losing streak heading into the playoffs anyday.

Tom,

Reid is a terrible coach? A terrible coach who has led his team to Division Championships five out of the last six years? Sounds like sour grapes to me.

Sure, any given Sunday any team can win. Remember when the Colts got obliterated by the Jaguars? But your reluctance over picking the Eagles is puzzling. They've gone from 5-6 to 10-6 whereas the Giants have completely fallen apart after what, frankly, was a pretty lucky start to begin with. Can the Giants beat the Eagles? Sure. But the Eagles, as Mark notes, are playing better than any team in the NFC right now. There's no reason to expect them to stop.

Reid is a terrible playoff coach? How did he get to the NFC Championship 4 years in a row?

Andy Reid a terrible playoff coach? That's a little harsh. The Eagles have never lost a first-round playoff game under him. And they won't lose this Sunday.

You need to take your medication.

Colts are ripe for getting picked off by KC.

How can you criticize Andy Reid? He's one coach that keeps his cool under fire. Just keeps that slight smile on his face, like he knows something you don't know.

I'm a Giants fan, but have to say the Andy Reid is by far the best coach in the NFC East right now. His team has much less talent that the mediocre Giants or the simply atrocious Redskins --- let they go 10-6 and win the division. The Eagles were leading in the fourth quarter in 14 of 16 of those games. They don't always win, but the Eagles are always in the game and that's a sign of good coaching.

All the home teams will win this week.

I agree with the anonymous Giants fan. Ried is a good coach, and perhaps the one thing that keeps the Eagles in it year after year.

I still hope beyond hope the Giants talent will live up to their talk and pull off a miraculous win. But Reid is a good playoff coach. Coughlin on the other hand should be fired. I think Tiki saved Tom's job last week, so I can only hope the Giant show some respect since there's no way I'll be able to see Tom gone next year.

Alas, how many of us Giants fans are secretly hoping for a merciful burying this weekend, putting an end to the maddening tenure of Captain Quegue, er, I mean, Coach Coughlin . . .

Seattle wins if S.Alexander has a good day. Colts win because of Peyton Manning. Eagles will represent the NFC in the Superbowl, and the Pats are going to win.

I hope you are right about the Patriots, but I have to agree with the poster that this could be an upset. My take is the Jets are hungrier, and the Patriots are probably looking past them, although I'm sure they know better intellectually.

Andy Reid a terrible playoff coach? I'd say he's done a pretty good job - 5 division titles in 6 years, 4 trips to the conference title game, a 3-point loss in the Super Bowl. Sure, he doesn't have a Bill Belichek-esque playoff record, but it's still good.

I wouldn't pick me vs Saddam.

Mark, I agree with Indy over KC. In fact I think it will be a route. Yes Indy has had problems stopping the run, but I think they have been playing in cruise control and will crank it up a notch in the playoffs like the 49ers used to do in the 80's. Remember? I also see the upset special being the Jets over New England. I like Dallas over Seattle with T.O. having a huge game. Finally, the GINTS over the Eagles. Jeff Garcia comes back to reality...

Let me explain. First, I'm a big eagles fan.

Reid has a stubborn reluctance to change game plans once it's clear something doesn't work. He never has a half-time adjustment.

His style works great during the regular season, but during the playoffs every team has a new wrinkle. In my opinion, this is why the eagles lost so many conference championships and why they lost the superbowl. An inability to recognize what the other team is doing and counter it at half time.

Mind you, I think most coaches are terrible playoff coaches. But Andy's lack stands out only because he's so good otherwise.

I really want the Eagles to win. And logically , if you look at the two games between the clubs this year, the eagles dominated most of both games. But they lost the first one in a way they shouldn't have (poor game adjustments by Reid again, in my opinion). The only thing that will save them this time is they're now running the ball. Andy Reid had a great reluctance to run the ball with McNabb in. Someday I hope he writes a book and explains why, because the offense is 100% better when they run. They've got one of the best lines in the league. *I* could run behind that line. And Andy wouldn't run until his job was on the line.

It's going to be a fun weekend.

Honestly, who cares what happens in the Non-Football Conference between the Iggles and Giants? Wasn't always thus, but is this year. Colts-KC is all about ball control. If KC's D was a little better then it's a no brainer, but if LT gets 35 touches KC should win, regardless of who's at QB for either team.

First let me tell keven that the GINTS arent winning anything. They arent a team... But the GIANTS are still not going to win anything. PHilly is going to crush them. It isnt even going to be a game. I predict Philly to be up 21 to 0 at the half. and probably win by a score similar to 41 to 14. ALso the Seahawks will win this one in a nailbiter. that one will be separated by a field goal. Romo will fumble twice and throw one pick in that game, because he isnt ready for the playoffs. Problem is that the hawks are so beat up they probably wont capitolize on romo's mistakes. Still they will win. KC will upset the COlts. Manning cant score if he isnt on the field, and with the chiefs potent running attack, look for them to eat up the clock and score alot of TD's it will be close but KC wins it. Last but not least is the Patriots and Jets. Now i think that if you be on the Jets you will win, because the spread is 8 and a half points. However Pats win the game. There is no way that brady and the pats will drop another game to the jets, WONT happen. It will most definatly be closer than predicted by most annalysts but the pats win. They are a more balanced team than the jets, and their defense is second in the league. Look for asante samuel to step up and look like ty law in his prime. He will have at least 2 picks.
