Winslow's Knee Surgery More Extensive Than Originally Thought

The knee surgery that Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow underwent on Jan. 30 apparently was more extensive than was believed at the time.

According to several reports, Winslow underwent microfracture surgery on his knee. Initially, it was thought he merely was having damaged cartilage repaired and scar tissue cleaned out.

This surgery, instead, apparently was designed to grow new cartilage. Players can take up to a year to recover fully from microfracture surgery and some never achieve the desired results.

Looks like the 'skins made the right decision when deciding between Winslow and Sean Taylor.

Just because Winslow had injuries doesn't mean they picked the right person. Those injuries where random chance occurrences. Sean Taylor's legal troubles where a much more result of stupid actions, than Winslow's broken leg. Put another way Taylor would have had the legal trouble not matter where he went, Winslow may or maynot have had a broken leg.

It that kind of back slapping mentality that allows the 'skins to keep making stupid mistaks.

I'll never forget that day...and then after we choose Taylor, Winslow called Gibbs a liar . I was happy we took taylor after that...big time. He's been nothing but a distraction and a waste since they took him. What a mouth the guy's got on him....Warrior? He can't even stay healthy enough to fight...

Winslow owuldn;t be in this mess if hadn;t been pulling tricks on his crotch-rocket...be real. Taylor is the far better player...

Mark: I can't tell from your post--is this the same knee that Winslow blew out in the bike accident?

Posted by: Jack | February 23, 2007 2:31 PM

winslow has been injury plagued his whole career taylor had one legal problem, but still is a beast on the field, and hasn't missed (m)any games due to injury sure he spit on some people, but he didn't break his leg riding a motorcycle (which would have happened if he played for washington or cleveland)

Posted by: steve | February 23, 2007 2:32 PM

How can you say falling off a motorcycle would have happened in Washington, would the curb he hit magically teleported to Washington? Not saying Taylor isn't a great player or that Washington didn't make the right pick. Saying they made the right pick because Winslow got injuried is dumb.

Posted by: bill | February 23, 2007 2:48 PM

I don't see how getting a safety who can't cover or tackle (with the exception of one "monster" hit every couple of games) is a major step up from a tight end who, though injured a lot, still caught 89 passes last year and led his team in receptions. Such biased opinions...

Posted by: Laurel | February 23, 2007 2:54 PM

Bill:

What people are saying is WInslow does dumb things off the field that have deprived his team of his services. Your implication that a curb needs to be teleported to Washington for WInslow to run into is ludicrious - Washington already has curbs ... and motorcycle dealerships. Winslow is prone to do dumb things no matter where he is.

Sean Taylor is no saint, but he has been on the field helping his team a whole lo more.

Maybe the real answer here is that both Winslow and Taylor are character-deprived idiots. Take me with the 5th or 6th pick in the draft, and I can assure you I'm not going to do tricks on a bike, I won't spit on opposing players, pistol whipping individuals for alleged stolen ATV's, or picking up DUI's.

Posted by: Bryan | February 23, 2007 3:10 PM

Hi Boltsfan

My implication was that he wasn't destined to fall off a motorcycle.

Sean Taylor made the pro bowl (in whatever manner) and winslow didn't...enough said

Only one thing matters--performance on the field over an reasonable period of time. Microfracture surgery is generally a last gasp attempt to keep a knee working (see: Terrell Davis, Curtis Martin, or Stephen Davis).

That doesn't mean he won't recover, but the odds aren't very good. The Browns used a high pick on him and got one very respectable season. We have already had several good seaons from Sean Taylor. That Taylor belongs to the "I talk about Respect but don't apply it to anyone but myself" crowd is a side issue.

Look. The fact these two over hyped players are drawing this wrath is what is sad. Legal or health, its sad to see this. The NFL todasy isnt but a bunch of crying babies looking to be a star. (See, Michael Irvin, Ray Lewis,Pac Man Jones, etc. etc.) NOT a single player plays today like old school players, by letting your game do all the talking. Either you wanted that 5th qtr, or you were glad the 4th was done.

Playing the what-if game is stupid. There's really only 2 ways to look at it.

1. Who has been more productive in their career?
or
2. Knowing what you know now, who would you draft?

Taylor in both instance.

Posted by: SkinsFan | February 23, 2007 4:30 PM

at least we didn't take Pac Man Jones! He should never be allowed to play in the NFL again, another Laurence Phillips imo.

Posted by: bms | February 23, 2007 4:35 PM

Yes, it's the same knee he injured doing his Evel Knieval impression. He is an awesome talent and answered the bell every week last season despite nagging knee pain. He reportedly is recovering more quickly than expected and will be back on the field by this summer. I only hope he thinks twice before speaking this year and simply lets his game do the talking.

Looking at my friends with crotch rockets.... I think Winslow WAS destined to fall off that bike.

The asphalt reaches up and grabs the tire of even the most caeful riders.... and being careful on those bikes is an oxymoron for most people in the early 20's lol

Posted by: A. John | February 23, 2007 4:57 PM

Hey, we already have Cooley. So I will take Taylor and Cooley over Winslow and ????.

BTW, people got on Taylor for the Pro Bowl play but AFC ran a trick play which I don't think we will see them attempt again. Football is football and it was a great hit. Stay at home if you don't want to play.

Sean Taylor vs. Kellen Winslow. One hasn't played enough games to allow us to see what he can do. Another has played enough games to show us that he lacks coverage skills and is always good for at least 1 stupid 15-yard, game-changing penalty per game. This is a ridiculous discussion...it's like picking the lesser of two evils.

Posted by: Anonymous | February 23, 2007 5:31 PM

They both suck, plain and simple. How in the hell taylor went to the pro bowl is beyond me, Tiki made sean taylor look like jason sehorn

Posted by: taylor sucks | February 23, 2007 5:31 PM

Taylor was the right choice for several reasons, at the time and in respect to what's happened since. Don't forget Winslow's serious leg/knee injury a couple years ago when he was teaching himself to ride a stunt motorcycle - in violation of his contract and common sense - that kept him out a year or so and might have contributed to his current injury. In any case, Sean Taylor has apparently gotten himself together and is an excellent defensive player. And remember the cardinal rule, defense wins championships.

I underwent microfracture surgery several years ago and for me it did not work. I am now down to about 15% of the cartilage in my knee. It was worth the try, but it is certainly no guarantee he will recover.

I'm certainly no Browns fan (Steelers!!), but I wish him well anyway. It's a tough thing to live with to be in your early twenties and have the only solution left a complete knee replacement, which might be next if this surgery doesn't work and his cartilage breaks down any further.

Taylor would knock the pigment out of Winslow's skin, nuff said

Rich people do and say idiotic things daily, poor people do and say idiotic things daily (see: Bill). No one is perfect.
If we are speaking about value, Taylor has been on the field more, made more game winning plays (Tampa playoff, Dallas 2006 block recovery return), and made opposing WR develope Aligatoris Armus. Sure the penalties and other off- field BS de-values his stock. The getting beat in coverage argument is bull. What does/ did GDub preach 'scheme not players'. A coach's job is to put a player in position to made the play, right? Unless he's calling the def. on the field, I can't completely fault him for getting burn a few times. He's a safety not a CB folks. Some of the best safeties get burned (Roy Williams V Santana in Dallas twice).
Bottom line how many big plays has Winslow made in the last 3 years?
I hope Winslow is able to salvage his career, but Taylor wins this battle hands down.

Random Chance Injuries??

He was popping a wheelies on a motorcycle. They attached his signing bonus.

Million dollar skills. Ten Cent Head

Both have made stupid decisions based on the feeling of invulnerability that comes with youth. The difference is, Winslow hurt himself and has worked hard to come back, while Taylor hurt someone else and has not learned anything. After pistol whipping and pointing guns at people in Florida, you then opt to SPIT on a player in that very same state before going to trial? Winslow is a tragic figure, his posturing is clearly an attempt to summon courage from tragedy. Good on him. Taylor's actions, spitting, unsportsmanlike play, etc., are pure thuggery. Sure we have the more productive player, but at what cost to the Redskin soul? I'll take a wounded, one-legged warrior over a two-legged thug any day.

>>I'll take a wounded, one-legged warrior over a two-legged thug any day.

At my dinner table or party, sure I'd prefer the gimpy guy trying to make the best of things. On my football team, gimme the thug ASAP.
