Seahawks Release Wistrom, Add D. Grant

The Seattle Seahawks released defensive end Grant Wistrom and reached a contract agreement with free agent safety Deon Grant.

This week's signing of free agent defensive end Patrick Kerney by the Seahawks made Wistrom expendable. He was regarded as a major acquisition in 2004 when he signed a six-year, $33 million contract with Seattle as a free agent that included $14 million in bonus money but he was plagued by injuries and managed only 11-1/2 sacks in three seasons with the Seahawks.

Wistrom declined the Seahawks' offer to rework his contract to stay. He would have had to reduce his $3.5 million salary for next season. The Seahawks are left with Kerney and Bryce Fisher as their starting defensive ends. They must absorb a $7 million salary cap hit for releasing Wistrom but under the terms of the new collective bargaining agreement are able to spread the cap hit over the next two seasons.

Grant leaves the Jacksonville Jaguars and presumably replaces Ken Hamlin as a starting safety in Seattle. Hamlin remains available as an unrestricted free agent.
